The BL on the tube stands for black light.
It's a pic of my original 15 watt black light fluorescent tube with white glass (don't use the blue glass ones).
Even if I can always replace it with a modern one, I'll be sad when it will die

To Lazslo: it's apparently also sometimes used in devices that kill mosquitoes and other flying bugs.

I guess these are the "modern" equivalents, but double check with yours:

A ...glad to see it IS BL :)

Those old Japanese tubes seem to last forever.....IIRC the one in my Meteor was the original tube too and still worked.

Days are becoming longer and longer don't you think? ::)
Anyway here's what's inside my Taito SI behind the moon:

…and for the record this is the reply from Giddygoon who also owns one
Quote
mine is a regular neon, which is 17watt neon tube... I think the black light is for both American versions midway versions...

Thanks, i will check it out!

I did some research on the tube topic and also did some tries. There seems to be bl and bl. The difference is in the spectrum and in the coating. The tube you are using has a white coating and is emitting most of it's light in the 350 - 400 nm range. Peak probably a 368. This is a uva tube also used in fly catchers and solariums. The black blacklight I believe sends out in the same range but the different tube coating filters out/ blocks part of it.
I'm planning to make a study of it because I'm not happy with the results sofar..... 1 - the data per tube is not always complete nor correct. 2 - i used so far a normal tube, not nice because the background is to bright and stars and planets don't standout. Pro the "moon" landscape looks nice. I used a black blacklight, pro the planets and stars standout and the sky is looking a creapy kind of black.... Me like, but the moon is not visible at all. Then I used a tube from my wifes face solarium ( gezichtsbruiner in Dutch) which is as far as my research goes equal to the tube you are using. The results are ok but not great the moon is not yellow but depresing green and to dark, stars, planets and sky are ok but not great....... So I will need to experiment a little..... Keep you posted.

Yes a black light white tube is the only way to go.
Did you make sure it's a 15Watt?

Did you try to put something, just for the test, between the moon and the too bright regular neon?
like a piece of thick white paper for instance?
Don't leave it there after the test of course.

- fix loose wires and groundstrap from the CRT.
- test CRT and chassis
- fix PCB
- clean button's
- restore landscape decall
- restore light fixture
- build everything back in
- repair, renew bottom plate
- make new backdoor
- build it together again  :P

So most of the work is done. The machine is clean, rust free, and WORKING  :) Well ..... It is working but not with the original pcb. The original pcb has some serious issues so I decided to put in a 60-1 pcb in it, which I configured to start with only space invaders. I added a temp. Jamma harnes.

I will try to repair the pcb on a later time, for the moment I dont have enough space on my workbench for a long term project.

For now I can play si so I'm happy. I wil post some pictures soon.

Hi Guys,

Wrapping it up for now with some pictures. The machine is clean, still I'm a bit sad that the artwork is in bad shape. Still I don't want to replace it with a sticker. I has seen action.... so what  :spaceace:

here it comes. Inside before and after.

Littlebit from the outside. Front, back, type plate and the little sticker that I think says it is a Taito license.
