Hello from Leeds
« on: January 08, 2012, 12:52:21 AM »
Hi everyone my names Russ (pretty obvious going by my username :D) i'm from Leeds,West Yorkshire,UK....

Not got any arcade machines at the moment (sadly not a lot of room in my house for such gems as my wife would say  :( :D)..I'm a cabinet maker by trade so making myself an arcade cabinet would not be that hard but the electronic stuff just goes over my head

My favorite arcade machines when i were a kid (i'm 41 now so i grew up in the 'golden age' of video arcade machines) were Starwars,Gyruss,Robotron 2084,Dragons Lair,Space Ace,Defender and Tron....

I have a lot of these games on the 'Mame' games compilation for the PC (read through a lot of threads on here and i see 'Mame' is quiet popular) but to try and play Starwars on Mame is so hard with the mouse controlling the curser

If anyone knows Leeds at all i used to go to the 'Starlight Rooms' arcade and the 'Mill Hill' arcade and the 'Original penny' arcade to get my 'game buzz'  8) sadly they are all shut down now as far as i know...

I do have my 'high scores' on the said machines above but obviously no way of 'proving' them  :( ...I see there is a 'high scores' thread on the forum as well so i'll put my scores in there, its up to you guys weather you believe me or course  ;) but they are all 100% true and not fabricated in anyway...

I also have some of the 'Midway Arcade Treasures' games on the PS2 and the PS1 (Williams Arcade Greatest Hits) but they are not like playing the real thing as you guys no  :-\...I haven't played (or seen) a classic arcade machine for years and would love to get 'to grips' with a Robotron again  8)

Anyway enough waffling  its great to be here  8)

Russ.... ;D

It does... I'm sure it would be cheaper to run a fleet of classic cars.

Nice carpentry work. I have a thing for old 60s/70s British teak furniture, particularly the G-plan and Jentique stuff. I'm a frustrated closet funriture designer really. Have the ideas, but not the skills (yet). Post some stuff of your work. I'd love to see it.

Cheers,

Si

Welcome Russ.
Try to find a Star Wars cab so you can get your toys out of their boxes ans display them on top of it  ;)
(and of course keep the boxes!).

thx for the warm welcome you guys  ;) (i can feel the love from here  8))

@simplesi......This the company i work for mate,

http://www.mainpinecompany.com/

Been working there for the last 12 years before that i worked at a Pine furniture company in Leeds.I've been Joinery since i left school (started on the building sites as an apprentice then slowly drifted into Bench work (which i do prefer)

@Chris i would love a Starwars machine (preferably a cockpit but due to limited space in my house i'd have to have an upright ;D) to display a few of my toys on top of (drifting off into 'pipedream' land ) still one day  ;)

Welcome from this mostly reader and not so much poster.

I'm a little bit into working with pine myself, though I don't make furniture from it, but Telecasters. Strictly hobby though, nothing outstanding  ;)
No arcade cab(s) yet, but happy owner of 2 Colecovisions, 2 Amigas and a pc running Mame.

Guitar builder then (luthier)...nice one  8)

That someting i've never attemped to be honest, there is a guy in Leeds called Dennis Elvidge who is a master at building Guitars (he's about 10 mins drive from me.I've been to his house only the once and its a guitar heaven he set up my electric (Ibanez) for me a good few years ago)

He showed me some of his guitars he's built and they are works of art  8)
