Anyone else got an e-mail from Mediametic ?
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:01:12 PM »
I just received an e-mail from Mediamatic in 020. I've never heard about them before but apparently they're some sort of "museum" and are planning an arcade/game related exhibition.

They contacted me through my VAPS entry.

They are asking for machines to be displayed at the exhibition.

The funny thing it they started the email with "Dear Rob" so I guess they also sent this mail to Rob from Lelystad ;)

Has anybody heard about Mediamatic ?

Here's the site: www.mediamatic.net

They're well known in the art meets technology world. Have been around for a while.
Some people I do work with have collaborated with them.

Good to know. I sent a reply and await their answer. As known, I think my games should be played as much as possible, but I do want them back undamaged.

But of course there are risks involved. Also, they're pretty late (exhibition start dec. 18 !).....

We'll see...

Blame me for suggesting this site...
I told them that Etienne, Level42, Darth Nuno are belenux collectors.
As you guys might know I built 29 Retro Space cabs for the Dutch Game Garden and Game Design faculty of the University Utrecht.
Now they think I know everything about retro games. And as DGG has connections everywhere in the Dutch game industry, they told Mediamatic about me. But all I have is handhelds, so I told them some guys on this forum collect the old cabs, and many of them are in the Benelux.

As I was told, the expo is on the Keizersgracht (edit: at the Vijzelstraat, but on the intersection with the Keizersgracht) in Amsterdam, and not aimed at kids or pub crawlers, but more at the creative scene. It's more of a galleria where they show it. Normally they use it for paintings I guess. Oops, its their own expo space.

Why not combine the (still unscheduled) DLF meeting with an exhibition?

Actually, that would be quite cool, though it had been mentioned before....

Yes, but there's another thread about it guys.....

I still would like to see hands WHO will load up one (or maybe a couple) of their cabs, drive across europe and then have it there for a weekend ?
I'm all for it, I've done crazier things.

Anyway, back on topic. I know that building very well. It's the ABN-AMRO building and I worked on the access control system VERY VERY long ago. I had a nice pass (naturally !) that allowed me to park in the garage there 24/7 (not that I used it much out of worktime, I mean, it's still 020 (no offense Gyruss ;) )

Anywayyyyy, got a reply back. They invite me to come over for some talks that happen (see the website) on wednesday nights from 18.00 till 20.00 h.. Pretty poor timing for people who do
a) have a job
b) don't live in the "grachtengordel".....

It's very, very unlikely that I can make it there on those times....but we never know with my work (I am quite often in 020 but you will always see that when you WANT to be there you are nowhere near the place....

But what I would like to know guys, would you put a machine up there, and if so, which one ?

Of course, all kind of night-mare scenarios flash through my mind about what COULD happen, but on the other hand, I've _always_ dragged my machines around to show them/ have them played by people.

It's because I believe the machines were once build to be played, and what's the purpose of having it in a gameroom all year without anyone else playing ?

So I'm not against the idea at all. The MAIN issue is that I would like to be around the cabs as long as they are displayed. We all know that they can fail at times and then there's only one person who knows exactly what to do....

Which leaves out an extended period of exhibition. It might be cool to have one special day there ? Maybe if other Dutchies could help as well ?

No offense taken.. The only cabs that I could lend them are the ms pac man and red tent (the other 2 don't work, yet).
But i don't want to take the risk, i'm happy they are still working and want to keep it that way (as long as possible).
I'm not experienced in fixing machines at all, and i want to safe myself the hassle.

And it also sounds like some hipster shit to me, like the space invaders expo in Amsterdam without an original cabinet. >:(
I mean, if they wanted to do an expo that bad (which is great), they should have done some research before and asked earlier.

just my opinion....

Good points....

I also have a feeling that they are WAY too late with this.....

Maybe we should just do our OWN exhibition. We could make it a weekend, something like CAX ! ;)

So....let's get up those hands. IF we have a venue (I _may_ be able to provide one) will there be collectors here who are willing to come over for a weekend, have a BLAST for a whole weekend and show off your machines. Technical support is available ;) (Right Etienne ? ) ;)
