:: GYRUSS :: Destination Earth ( * workshop * )
« on: December 19, 2008, 07:36:44 PM »
First, the road trip

The game was still in the Sam's garage ... until now  ;D Yes, It's time to bring it 'at home'  8)

For the first time, the workshop starts inside the my car  :D I've to clean 'under' the cabinet, or then I'll make dirty the new carpet

Ok, it's clean... let's unload it... Some ducks are watching me  ;D No ... this is no food  :D

And.... finally inside the 'messy' v2   8)

The serial number : 012861

Ok, under the plexi/bezel, there is an other cardboard bezel, but it is very damaged (It is torn and bent)  :ghost:. I'll check it later.
Now have a look at the monitor and its frame

It's just dropped on the cab, there is no screws fixed between the metal monitor frame and the brackets in the cabinet  :o ???
That is the reason why I heard noises during the road trip : the monitor was moving inside the cab  :o :ghost:
In addition, that monitor frame doesn't match the bracket of the cabinet ! The holes in the metal frame don't match any hole from the bracket.
So why the hell that monitor has been dropped inside that cab ?
Nothing else inside the cab, except the a power supply.

Ok let's start to work. First I've to restore the marquee retainer and the bezel retainer, full of rust :

After a first 'sanding' session

Let's use my usual Rust remover

And finish the work manually...

One layer of primer :

Than two layers of black :

Ok, even if it's not the original monitor frame, I'll try to use it.

As I said previously, these holes don't match the metal brackets inside the cabinet  :?

Let's fix that  ;)

Done :

The monitor that was 'dropped' inside that cab' is not working.
OK let's give to that Gyruss a brand new TV/Monitor

Usual stuff  ;D

The transplantation is finished  :-*

On location

Great, I can access the hidden service menu ... ::) :P :

... and the usual Geometry settings  8)

Hehe Barry  ;) Yes, as you can see it's not just a decoration... Well done  :-*  :spaceace:

OK, let's make the magical cable : VGA to SCART

I'm using the best configuration ever : Ati+SB16 / AdvanceMame under DOS

It gives me the *PERFECT* Gyruss Arcade Experience without having the board

- perfect ratio picture
- pixel rendering 1:1
- 60 Hz refresh via the native RGB signal

*EXACT GAMEPLAY*  :-* :-* :-*

See the quality of the display/screen

RGB scanline ... I love it  :-*

Impossible to make the difference between the real board and this setup !  8)

I do like Gyruss, great music!

The game's background music is an electronic, fast-paced arrangement of J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565; this particular arrangement is superficially similar in sound to "Toccata", a rock arrangement by the UK-based instrumentalist group Sky. Gyruss is notable for using "stereo" sound, which according to the bonus material for Konami Arcade Classics, was achieved by utilizing discrete audio circuits. (Gyruss on Wiki::) ;)

Ok, let's have a look at the control panel...

... very used ...

...impossible to move the joystick?!  :ghost:

Let's remove everything.

Rust... of course  :-X

Did 'ya say dirty ?

As usual, two baths... the left one is water + strong soap, the right one is rust-remover :

24 hours... it looks better, but of course... it's still 'used' ... no miracle with that  :-\

The control panel overlay is very 'used'  :-\

Usually, this *magic* sponge does miracle

Let's go...

Well, it's better...

...but some area are too used. It's not dirt, it's used or damaged  Impossible to do better than this

I think I'll live with that  :) The worst area is the upper part, in the curve, but I'm sure It won't be too visible when I'll put back the panel on the cabinet. It's a kind of 'hidden area' for the player after all  ;)
Used means also 'vintage'   :-*

The original joystick is damaged, and some parts of it are missing, but I've just got a NOS  :-*

Same manufacturer : MONROE ELECTONICS.

I love NOS  :-*

Let's put back the buttons and that new joystick onto the panel, and start *at least* a first game on Gyruss  :P  ;D

It plays great ! I love Gyruss  :)

OK, let's refresh the screws. After the 'Rust remover' bath, I sand them with a Dremel...

...and I paint them (primer + 2 layers of mate black) ... usual mushrooms picture  ::) ;D
