You take a different approach to it then I do, but I can appreciate your way too.
I personally prefer to keep the original boards running as much as possible. And if at all possible the original monitor too, although I've learned a great deal from your TV replacement method with other cabs of course !
Tell me did you save the original monitor (parts) ?? I sure hope so !
I'd be interested in them !
Also, did you save the RS parts ? Was there a RS PCB-set inside ?
But the most important question of all:

I have exactly the same problems (worse) as you with the sides of my Red Nintendo cab and I'd LOVE to fix it just like you did (not re-paint the entire side, also because my cab already has the Mario Bros side-art on it.
