Title: :: Donkey Kong - The ReNoVaTiOn :: The End !
Post by: DarthNuno on February 17, 2008, 07:52:00 AM
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/dkdiary.jpg)

Following this 10th Anniversary UK Roadtrîp (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=301.0), and because the Galaga Renovation (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=314.0) is done... I'm starting now to work on this 'Nintendo Red Cab' loaded with Radarscope config. But I'll convert it into a far better game : Donkey Kong  :-*
In the Arcade history, it was the fate of many Radarscope...

Radarscope :

The game was popular for a short period in Japan, so the president of newly-founded Nintendo of America, Minoru Arakawa, placed a large order for it. By the time the game arrived in New York, months had passed and the buzz surrounding the game had dissipated. The game's sounds were high pitched chirps which many gamers found annoying. American arcade operators were unimpressed, and Nintendo of America was stuck with thousands of unsold units sitting in the warehouse. Arakawa faced financial disaster, so he pleaded with his father-in-law (Nintendo CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi) to provide him with a new game which he could install as a replacement in the Radar Scope arcade machines, which could be repainted to reflect a new game.

Yamauchi assigned the games designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, the task of "fixing" the game so it would appeal to gamers. Rather than tweak a poor game, Miyamoto designed an entirely new game, Donkey Kong, using the Radar Scope hardware. Out of the 3000 arcade units originally manufactured, around 2000 were converted to Donkey Kong. The converted units can be spotted by their red cabinets. Conversion kits for the new game were then shipped to North America, where Donkey Kong went on to become a huge success. As a result, Nintendo established itself as a powerhouse in the North American video game market. (source from Wikipedia)

The Radarscope to Donkey Kong is very easy task, and most important : it's a reversible operation  ;)

OK, let's start at his point : The Radarscope bezel and the control panel have been removed :

Let's remove the back door...

There is a lot of work to do on the sides  :-\ It doesn't really appear on the following picture, but there are a lot of scratches & hits on the cabinet sides to repair or paint... I'll get back on this later...

First of all, let's remove the dust inside the cab :

It looks better now :

The monitor is not working  :-[ Let's remove it...

Here's the monitor 'box '

There is a black bezel in heavy paper. I've to remove it :

Ok, no more bezel. Strange... it looks like a TV front cover  ???

Well, I've to remove everything... in order to put a *brand* new TV in full RGB... as usual  :P ;D

Amazing... it seems that the original Radarscope monitor was a kind of TV/Monitor  ???

Ok, now that the TV/Monitor box is out, let's continue to clean the cab...

Done  :-*

Of course, I won't use the original & broken neon tube... so I remove it, and clean all that area :

The coin door... Rust  >:(

The coin box... and I don't have the key to open it  :-\ Not a problem  :pac:  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

Hey, I'm rich now  :P

Ok, I remove the coin door and its frame... I'll work on it later. Note that the T-molding has to be changed :

Arghh... what T28 means  ??? Why to write T28 like that on the panel  :?

In order to clean the holes, I'll remove the speaker...

Ok, now let's start to examine the cab...closer !

Many hits, dirts, small holes...  :-\

...and this is only for the front of the cab'... but... it won't be a problem  ::) :P Let's start a first cleaning... only water & soap... of course it won't fixes the problems  :pac: :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

Let's remove the "T28", like this

OK, it's better...

Thanks for your support scr33n   :-*

Ok, I remove the *dead* T-molding

Let's start to work on the first side.

Ouchh  :-\

...a lot of work :-\

...not an easy fix... but it can be done  8)

The first step : cleaning with a simple sponge, water & soap

Of course... it's not enough... I've to remove these (too deep) black marks  :-\ I'll try to remove them with White Spirit

...mmhhhh, it's better... but still not strong enough... These marks are really hard to remove  >:(

THE SOLUTION IS : "Mr Propre Magic" sponge  :) :) :)

Check out this video

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dk/mr-propre.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQyVwdnppNc)

Yeeaahh  :-* No more black marks  :D

But I still...

...have to fix these...

scratches on the wood  :?

StAy TUnEd (hey... it's been a while  ;))

Another Great Game Rescued by Nuno!!!    :D :D

So ... Bruno you plan to keep the red color?  :-*

Have you already found the right paint for the restoration?

Another question: it's true that Donkey Kong and generally all nintendo games (Donkey Kong 3, Mario Bros, Popeye etc...) used a particular monitor?

Title: Re: :: Donkey Kong - The ReNoVaTiOn :: Work In Progress
Post by: DarthNuno on February 22, 2008, 09:05:00 PM
Yeps, I'm keeping that original red color. Regarding the monitor, as you can see on the previous pictures, it really looks like a tv frame... but the electronics parts is similar to a true monitor... unfortunately, that original monitor was not working anymore... I had to replace it -as usual- by a brand new TV (in full RGB of course) ;)

Stay tuned... this project is almost finished... I just have not a lot of free time these days to post the Work In Progress  :-\ :P
Title: Re: :: Donkey Kong - The ReNoVaTiOn :: Work In Progress

Well, before to remove these bad scratches, I've to clean the other side.

Here it is before the cleaning :

Dirty  :-[

...but this is the worse ... hits ... scratches  >:(

Ok, let's start to clean it. Same technique than the first side : strong soap + water, and rinsing with clear water

And the famous 'Mister Propre' sponge

No more dirts, but still the scratches of course  :?...

OK... Got a complete Donkey Kong reproduction  :-*

Its particularity ? Well the game Donkey Kong was made to replace the poor Radar Scope game. So Nintendo built the control panel with the same red color than the Radar Scope cab... because -once again- DK has been made for that red cab first  ;)

Because I'll need red paint that will match my red cab, I take the panel to the paint shop in order to analyze it and get the exact red color :

We got it  8)

The result  :-* :-* :-* :

OK, now with the exact tint of paint, I can start the job :)

First, let's fix the biggest areas like this :

Fine, but here's the delicate job to do... fixing all of this  :-\ :

Have a look closer... see all theses tiny scratches ...

Because I have the PERFECT red tint of this cabinet, I can do this

OK... you'll understand better with this video  ;D

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dk/paint4youtube.jpg) (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jw9q_LaVWVE)

...and the result is ... GREAT  :-* :-* :-*

yeah its nice but isnt it better to paint the whole cab back again?
it looks nice like that but if you have a closer look you can still see where the scratches are

but if you like it like that its also ok its just a thought ;)

thanks for your enthusiasm regarding this WIP  :-*

Here's the tools of the day...

... the T-Molding session  ;)

Let's go :

Same method than my previous WIP (see Galaga, Space Ace, Pac Man, etc) ... the only 'delicate' parts are these rounds. You've to cut the T-molding like this :

I don"t hesitate to put a lot of hot glue to finish the job, like this :

This is it :

Thanks  :)

Ok, here's the work for today : to remove rust on the metal parts :

This time, and because these metal parts are very thin, I'll sand them manually :

The first one is done

The other one :

Done :

I put a brand new neon by the way :

Painting session...

...as usual, primer first ...

...then black satin... easy ! I'll work oh the coin door later by the way...

OK, before to see the result on location, let's remove the protection on that *brand* new Donkey Kong marquee repro

...and see how does it look on the cab'  ;)

Yes Steve, the quality is very good  :)

Now, let's prepare the cable VGA to SCART RGB, in order to replace the original *dead* monitor by a *brand* new tv.

Here's the preparation of the cable...already the same

View from the back

I'll finish it like this, with an hot glue gun

Done :

It's very difficult to buy brand new 4/3 & CRT TV tube nowadays... and I can't order the previous models anymore (Bluesky & Manhattan)  :-\

But fortunately, I've found a new model : Altus  :) I got it for 'Carrefour' shop in Belgium

Well, it's not really cheap : 150€ ...but here, in Europe, brand new *arcade* monitor cost over 300€, without shipping cost...

Ok, let's try it :

Wow... great image  :) Cool  :-* :-* :-*

I am currently looking all over Norway for a Nintendo cab. It is my dream to have one of these beautiful games.  :)

I am currently looking all over Norway for a Nintendo cab. It is my dream to have one of these beautiful games.  :)

Have a look at ebay.be  ;) Not now, but maybe one or twice a year, I saw some Nintendo cabs for sale... and not too expensive  :P But I agree, it's not a common cabinet at all  :-\

OK, the new tv is working fine. I'll let it switch off and unplugged at least two weeks. And because I don't want any trouble, I'll discharge the tube manually :

Now the delicate operation... get ready ?

Done :

Let's fix the monitor board :

In order to put the monitor in the correct orientation, I've putted a sticker on the top (it's written "score"  ;D)

Here's the computer I'll use (I'll describe it later in this WIP) :

I've to clean all the monitor frame, but I can't resist to put it back inside the cab, and see if the monitor is still working after the operation  8) :P

Yeah...  :-* :-* :-*

Now, have a look at this

I LOVE EUROPEAN TV / Scart connector : 60hz display via a pure RGB signal... This is what call : 'Arcade Perfect Display'  :-* :-* :-*

Let's continue... today... easy work  ;)

I've to clean all around the tube, and remove some glue...

...that comes from this black paper bezel :

I also have to repair it by the way (a tear on it) :

Some water to clean it...

...and some glue + adhesive paper to fix it :

It looks better now :

Ok, to fix back this 'paper bezel', I'll use double side adhesive paper :

On location

Now, here the *brand* new DK repro bezel

On location :

Great.....  :-* :-*

Bruno, one question:

what kind of t-molding you've used for the cab?

5/8" t-molding:

http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=TMW58IN

or

9/16" flat t-molding

http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=TMWF916IN

Thanks...

Yop  :-*

I got the T-molding from the twistedquarter ebay shop, and the right reference is :

Nintendo 9/16" WHITE T-molding **Brand New** 20 ft.

20 feet is enough for doing all the cabinet by the way  ;)

Couicks  :P

Now... this is a great moment... I'll apply the new repro side arts  :)

First, I've to find the exact location on the side before applying them... ok  :)

Here's the procedure :

(As you'll see on the coming pictures, this is my wife who are doing all the job    ;D )

Today, let's "refresh" this old coin door :

In order to do the job, here's the tools of the day :

This time, I'll do the job manually, see this vid'  :P

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/dk/coinyoutube.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_qnWdkd800)

*Beware* a lof of dust with this method !  :ghost:

The most part of the job is done...

...but I've to finish the work manually, because there are some areas almost impossible to reach with the drill, and in order to have an homogeneous finish before applying the new paint :

Here's my method to paint *inside* my house... this 'custom' box  ;D

As usual, PRIMER first

Once it's done, I'll apply to layers of 'black satin' paint... here's the result

Here's the original screws from the frame's coin door. Dirt & Rust  :-\

Not a problem... 24 hours in a 'rust remover' bath...

..and they look like new  :-*

The work on the coin door is not over. Now let's fix this

The usual bath in order to remove dust & rust :

24 hours later

Now, I sand everything, except the 'return coin' push button...

...which I'm protecting it like that...

...before applying the paint.

Primer first

Let's try something new... "hammerfinish silver" paint

One layer will be enough, this paint is very thick. Beware, fresh paint

I'm using Advance Mame 0.90 + Advance Menu under pure DOS.

When I boot the cab, I got this menu

Here's what I can play on this cab  :-*

Opsss... one game is missing on this cab...  :? ... and maybe the most important one for me ...  CRAZY KONG  :P

Yes, I remember playing it when I was young, even more than the original Donkey Kong game from Nintendo...

Ok, but it's a *pain* to remove the computer from the cab now, add a CD-Rom drive on it or a floppy drive... because it's a full DOS configuration in it  :(

Here's the solution : Let's replace the HDD by a compact flash card and its IDE converter

I copy all the file from the HDD to the compact flash card... I add the Crazy Kong rom... and I also make a backup of everything  ;)

Let's boot on it now

Yehawww  :D Live will be more easy now  :P ;D

I do not know if the roms can just be renamed to work in mame yet as I have not been able to obtain a copy.
Maybe they wll be included mifitmame.

Yet another great restauration, beautifully documented.

Congrats Bruno.

I'd like to ask: do you have any documentation on that dos configuration on that compact flash card.
I'm very interested on installing it on some (very old) pc-motherboards. They are way too old to run XP (or even 98). And no hard drives for those mother boards. Lucky for me they still have their power supplies, internal memory and processors.

No rush Bruno (the pc in my mame cabinet runs the games I play smoothly under mame-xp). Maybe I'll be able to pick up that particular knowledge when we meet. (I might just start a petition to have Buger King start in Belgium)
Once again: great cab !  :P

Great renovation as always. I cant get over how much better the cabinet looks painted red.

I just watched your YouTube video. Was the music from a film called "Electric Dreams". I remember seeing the film in the summer of 1984 in New York. There was a huge arcade next door to the cinema in those days.

Bruno,

Could you answer the following for me (and others)

Where did you get the following and how is the quality ?

Control Panel (I take it, that it was complete) was it from Mikes arcade ?

All the other artwork from the link to the eBay shop ?

I don't want to get inferior parts and as you have them, that might help others  :)

I have no idea why I missed this thread........ Great restoration Bruno (as always :) )!

You take a different approach to it then I do, but I can appreciate your way too.
I personally prefer to keep the original boards running as much as possible. And if at all possible the original monitor too, although I've learned a great deal from your TV replacement method with other cabs of course ! :)

Tell me did you save the original monitor (parts) ?? I sure hope so !
I'd be interested in them !

Also, did you save the RS parts ? Was there a RS PCB-set inside ?

But the most important question of all:

>>>>>>   Do you have a paint-code for that red paint <<<<<<<< ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Please, please ? And what brand/type paint did you use ?

I have exactly the same problems (worse) as you with the sides of my Red Nintendo cab and I'd LOVE to fix it just like you did (not re-paint the entire side, also because my cab already has the Mario Bros side-art on it.

Here's a link to my RS/MB restoration:

Owwww.....sorry about the monitor parts..... Glad you still got the RS parts though....are you interested in selling them ? Is the PCB there ?

Thanks for the paint pics ! Corona is an ICI brand. Regretfully ICI is almost a non-existant paint brand in The Netherlands. We mostly have paints of AkzoNobel (Sikkens). Incidently AkzoNobel just bought ICI, but I don't think I will find a mixing machine like that overhere.....

The sticker doesn't seem to have any percentage codes either.... :S

So.....did you need all the paint in that pot ? :D :D :D ;)
