[Restoration] Missile Command
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:29:48 PM »

Last weekend i picked up a Missile Command - on the famous "Duke of Lancaster"
I had only seen pictures of it, but when i got it home, and had some time to expect it closer, it seemed like a _very_ good deal.

I would like to apologies on forehand for the poor quality of the pictures, but my real camera is in Denmark...
Unloaded:

Inspection of the buttom.. in remarkable good condition, even the T-molding is unscratched!

The CP is not in good condition, so i hope they will do another run of those on KLOV...

Now, the sides is really good for such an old game, considering it have lived it´s hole live on a beached ship..
Left side, the best of the sides, only small dings on the edges and next to the CP.

Right side, light scratches, a few more dings, but nothing serious...

... More to come

Wow, nice looking machine!  One great thing about Atari side art is how durable it is, it typically cleans up quite nicely.

When you see this beauty it is hard to believe it has been on a ship for all those years. It looks really really good!

i wish it was that easy, but i still need a few more things before it will play again....

->
Oh, nearly forgot - theres an intact sticker on the back!!

A closer look at the front reveals a lot of dirt... and the bezel and marquee retainers are rusted....

Removed CP, Bezel and Marquee....

Bezel all dirty..

Bezell all clear, there´s some small scratches in it still, and some red rust mark after the.... rust... i think if i have had my Novus kit, it vould all been gone...

Now, the retainers turn, sand the old paint + rust down...

First coat of primer..

2nd coat of primer - yes, have placed them on top of a heater, because theres 1 degree at the warehouse atm = sloooooooow drying time..

After 3 coats of Mat Black, it´s time to put it all together...

nice one, michael, if i'm not mistaken this is the first resto i've seen from you, isn't it?

btw, how does the trackball feel? is it even moving? my guess would be that it's completely rusted in and needs to be replaced ...

Youre right ully - twice!

Heres the trackball assembly, not in "working" order, it moves barely, but if the game was working, it would not be playable ... don´t know what to do about that.....   ;D

Yes Etienne, the shape is roughly the same as your beloved zacck´s,  - and this one is in even better condition than the hand painted MC i got.. someone throw that pic on here please  ;D ;D ;D

The screws that was used for the marquee and bezel retainers where quite rusted, and i damaged some of them screwing them out, anybody know where to get that exact model??

Exactly how I thought it would be ! Only a small dent in the rollers because it has not been played that much but rusted as hell because of the salty sea-air.

That unit can easily be restored. Take is apart completely. There is an excellent drawing in the manual if you forget how to re-assemble it.

Order new rollers and bearings from Bob Roberts.
http://TheRealBobRoberts.net/parts.html#tbs

(You need the Atari TB kit (Rollers & bearings) 4" for $30)

His rollers are the only one's of stainless steel (so will never rust again ;)) AND he greases and breaks in the bearings so you don't have to do that.
(Do NOT remove the grease when your receive them !!! I love the smell ;))
So....everything is "plug & play" from Bob....

I can't really see on the picture but it looks like the ball itself isn't half bad and could be fine with just some cleaning.  The frame looks like it will be fine again with some light sanding.
While ordering from Bob get some new carriage bolts for it too (with which it is mounted to the CP.

Also check the encoder wheel if it is not too rusted. If there's much rust in the holes it could interfere with the good working.

Also remove the connectors on the optic boards (the small pcb's) and check the pins for rust. DO BOTH and ALSO the connector that goes to the main harness. This way you check them all but will also "wipe off" some possible rust you hardly see.

Bob also has replacement encoder wheels (check for size though) and harnesses.

For the optic boards, you will have to wait until the game runs to see if they still work OK. Let me know if they don't.

It's a shame I don't have the MC cabaret anymore as I could have done a lot of testing on it for you ;)

If you want I can check / rebuild the TB and AR-II board though, both are the same on my Centi.

Hi and welcome here!
I hope it wont take too long, and maby it wasn't such a good idea to post a fake videopic, though it seemed like a fun idea back then  :)

Now you see how things work here on DLF - so hurry, start a thread and share your resto with the rest of us :spaceace:

Hey the video was funny, it had a few people convinced for the short time until you told them

I see how things work and I also see no direct upload for pictures on threads, booo hisss

This means I have to upload my pics elsewhere and link  :'(
