BattleZone road trip and WIP
« on: September 11, 2007, 07:20:46 AM »
  for the last  few weeks, the game-room has been upside down, a few cabs have been sold, and a few new ones have join

This is the last one in  <BattleZone>

I play the game a few years ago in Orlando FL, and sins that day, decided that i will get one

I have been looking for one for the last 2 years, but never got really lucky on my search...until a few weeks ago   8)  found one on ebay, i decided to get it  :D

The cab was shipped with Forward air, that mean it is not a door to door delivery...i will have to pick it up at the terminal, here in Miami ...near the airport   :o

I got the usual phone call " hello, sir...we have something for you here, waiting for pick up ..."   8)

TIME FOR PICK UP  :D

It was a beautifful day here in Sunny isle beach (north miami beach)
that where the Arcade fever gameroom is ...

just one problem  :? the cab wont fit in the Mustang  :|

i had to rent one

the terminal is 25 minutes from where i live....

arrived on time ...

i notice the cab in the back of the warehouse...

time to put it in the truck...as i can see it is very well wrap  8)

time to go back home,

the good thing, is that i have a loading dock where i live ...

the cab is at home, it is time to unwrap it

BattleZone first impression

this is really not the usual arcade cab, it is very well design, really look like a tank !!!
the cab is in very well condition, ...so far...

time to see the inside...

the coin door

the pcb

audio/regulator board

THE SCREEN

as you can see the monitor is set Horizontally , like space invaders...
the monitor is reflected on a mirror , around the monitor i found the bezel...

the art work and controller:

that the deal, you have 2 neon in the cab
one that light up the marquee, and one "black light" that make the bezel, inside the cab glow  8)

i could not capture it in picture  :| probably because the bezel is very dirty ....
i also found the transparant color overlay on top of the monitor (green and red)

ok, time to power that baby

wowwwwwwwwwwwww....

also, when you play, and put you face on that periscope  :o:  other player can fallow your progress on the game, because you have 2 opening windows on each sides

what a CAB    I love it !!!!!

after few minutes of game play, i notice some issues on the screen, so i decided to turn it off....

the game need a complete tune up, like a did on my asteroids cocktail table... vector games

this what i have to do:

-clean the power block
-change the big blue
-cap kit the audio/regulator board
-cap kit the monitor
-clean the pcb

i think that enought work for the moment

ok, time to work on the cab  :D first thing to do is to remove the power block, to give it a little cleaning, and to change the Big Blue  :work:

The big blue is a big capacitor, is job is to smooth the +5 voltage that goes to the PCB.
after been 25 years in the cab, thoose big cap need to be change, most of the time, this is what coz the problem in the game....
where to find one ???  BOB ROBERTS  8)

http://homearcade.org/BBBB/

The power power block:

time to replace the BB...

the black one is the new one  8)

Just making sure that everything is in place...

job done  :wh:  ready to go

next, capkit the audio/regulator board...  :work:

Time to go deep into the wip   :D

i draw the cab, so you guys can understand how it work  :D
the monitor is placed in the cab, to be able to reflect into a mirror...
behind that mirror, you have a colorfull Bezel (tank dashboard) iluminated by a black light...it is very simple but the effects are stunning !!! (same thing in the space invaders cab)

now removing the periscope:

after that i removed the mirror. AND WOWWWWWWWWWWWW
LOOK WHAT I FOUND BEHIND  8)

BUT i do not understand why i can not see very well the bezel glowing behind the mirror  :?

OK i know now why

as you can see the back mirror is so dirty   :?

the most difficult thing to do ...removing the monitor  :?

it is a WG 19V2000 black and white vector

i need to discharge the monitor  :alien:  to remove the deflection board, to be able to work on it and install a new capkit....

i use a HIGH VOLTAGE PROBE, it is much better for thoose type of monitor, it will help to avoid damaging the HV diode...

the force is with you young Jedi

Voila :

i also found this on the back door :

now, i have to clean, and fix a few stuff

:D  more progress   :wh:

Time to sart to give a boost to the audio/regulator board, by changing all capacitors...

Here is the A/R II

I use a desoldering iron pump...

here are the parts to change:

capacitors

1uf 50v                c22/c23
22uf 35v               c24/c31
470uf 25v              c1/c4/c12
1000 uf 25v            c13
3300uf 35v             c9/c10/c18/c19

resistors:

10ohms                 r30

regulateur de voltage:

7812                   q8
7905                   q9

transistors:

2N6107                 q2
2n3055                 q3

everything as been removed:

here is a brand new cap-kit from Bob Roberts:

I use some Hot-glue to fix the cap to the board:

need to change some transistors too  :D

time to cut all extra wires:

voila, A/R II done, and distributing the correct volatge  8)

NEXT, THE MONITOR

A question... Your iron pump seems very usefull and easy to use :

Do you know where I can purchase something similar ?

   :o  :?:

Not sure in Belgium  :?  I bought it  for $15 radio shack
but will probably not work on belgium AC unless you have a transformer ...

BEST TOOL EVER ...i recomand to have one to do capkit  8)

Back on this Fred.

I got a question. The board of my Battlezone doesn't work (it beeps because some RAM are defect), and I would like to know if the vector monitor is working or not  ??? ...because my screen stays black...  :-\

Can you switch on your game with the TEST switch at on, and tell me if your screen start up immediately and/or if something appears on the screen ?

Thanks  :-*
