Space Ace Scratch build
« on: April 14, 2011, 03:07:54 PM »
Hi everyone,  I am coming to the conclusion of my Space Ace Scratch build project (will post what pics I have later).  I know where to get all the parts as far as art, and electronics and all, but my question is the Joystick.  What one should I get, as for as buttons go, my assumption is I can use any generic button right? :?

Are you building the dedicated 'inverted' cabinet, or the Dragon's Lair Cabinet converted to SA, and so US or Euro model?

For the joystick, the original used for DL/SA Euro Atari cabinet is the common 'leaf' one used on most Atari cabinet for that era (Xevious for example)

Pictures please  8)

Obviously you're going for a Dragon's Lair cabinet converted to SA  8)

Here's for information what a Space Ace 'inverted' dedicated cab looks like

Very good job so far. Do you plan to install a score board like the US model on your cab?

Thanks.  I'm skipping that part.  The only parts I have to transfer are the Metal Swiss cheese control panel (already bondo'ed, need to fix it some more) and the plastic marque holder.  I did get the plastic piece for the control panel but its all spray painted and missing the Annunciater board, but wouldn't do me any good anyway without the game..Oh and I also go the coin door, doesn't work but hey it looks good.  I stripped it down and repainted it.  I may try to find a way to rig it so when you push the coin return it will act as if you put a coin in.

Did some searching on Happ today.. this Joystick looks A LOT like the one you showed:
http://www.happ.com/joysticks/5060841125r.htm
however they label it as a Ms. Pacman/Galaga, would it still work?

That's a micro-switch joystick, not a leaf...

it will work it will not be like the original machine in feel.
it is a micro switch joystick which will click when you move, the one pictured earlier is a leaf switch.
groovy game gear do a new leaf switch 4 way joystick, i think that could be the one for you. i wait for the purists/owners opinion on that
just keeping an eye on things

I could be mistaken, but the DL/SA joystick is actually a 8 way - a 4 way will work just fine, but you will not be able to perform the angle moves (not that it really matters in the game anyways) - you also require the leaf push buttons for the correct feel there as well. ;)

There is also a height difference, you want the one with the longer shaft.

BTW - the cabinet looks good so far. :)
