Space Ace -> THE restoration !!!

Yeps ArcadeFever  :o  I've now all the stuff I need for this project  :P

Ok, it's time now to work on the control panel... coz' I'm a little bored about wood working and other stuff like that  :?

Here's the control panel

...as you can see, there is nothing to keep, exept the Atari button and of course the control panel itself  :?

So ... I'm removing the overlay

Let's sand it (done with a professional sanding machine ) :

Looks great, but the metal is not smooth enough and there's still some glue on it, rest of the orignal overal, so once again

Arggg    I can't remove the glue, so let's use the magical product :

...and I finish the job "manually"  8)

It's ok now. Ready to be painted  :)

Primer...

Done :

The other side of course :

I'll use the control panel overlay -under Bluth license- from Quaterarcade.

The US control panel is not exactly the same then the EURO one. The '1 & 2 start player buttons' have not the same size, and EURO panel do not include tbe skill selection buttons.

The US repro I'll use is the US model, but I want to use the original ATARI cone buttons for player 1 & 2... so the pre-cutted holes on that repro  for these buttons will be to large  :?

    I'll hide the hole with the use of the EXACT  overlay blue color  8)

I went to the paint shop with the CPO, and ask the seller to scan it for a perfect match of the color :

...and here's the custom blue color... done only for this project  8)

Ok, I can now paint the border of the control panel, and of course the area where the 'start players' buttons are located...

Oh yes, by the way I'm painting the CP border because the lenght of the CPO is not 100% the same than my CP. The CPO is a little little little bit smaller than the CP (maybe 1.5 mm). In that way, I won't see any color difference on the panel  8)

Yehawww  :P  Colors are the same   8)

Let's apply the overlay... in 2 steps (same method than the one I used for my Dragon's Lair cab)

...and there it is :

 :P

Put a new WICO 4 ways joystick, and all the buttons, and ... there is is :

 :P  :P  :P

It's time to work on the electronic part  :)

I don't want to use a MPEG files, but I don't have a working Space Ace PCB  :?  So what to do

OK, I'll use a real video disc player with the original Space Ace laser disc... I'll get a small computer just to emulate the pcb, with daphne emulator

The original Space Ace laser disc, ntsc version, in mind condition :

...and a SONY LDP 1500 videodisc player :

...in that way, I'll have the authentic arcade video quality, with a more reliable hardware inside  :o

Let's test the videodisc...

Ops... my old commodore monitor doesn't work in ntsc via a video composite signal... that's the reason I got a black & white picture.
Not a problem here, it's just a test  8)

Ok, let's choose a small computer... what about a Pentium 233mhz, 32MB ram, under windows 98 SE ?

...as I said previously, the computer will run daphne emulator, just to simulate the pcb, so the Pentium 233 does the job with any problem  :o

Ok, the original monitor doesn't work  :?

... well ...

Space Ace is one of my all time favorite games... so, it realy deserve a new monitor

Let's buy a brand new TV...

...with the exact tube size of the original tube : 19 "

Ok, let's test that TV...

A MIRACLE .... this TV understand ntsc video composite signal  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :P  :P  :P  :P  :P  :P

Thanks my lord  :o  I won't have to use the *brand new* ntsc to RGB conveter that I already got ( :? )

Ok, back to the original *non working*  monitor  :

I'm removing the tube and the PCB...

... in order to keep the original metal fixation.

Now, let's start to open the *brand new TV*

...only 5 skrews to remove and :

I'll add a piece of wood, as a TV pcb support :

It fits perfectly  :P  :P  :P

Let's test if it's still working

Great picture quality  :P

 :P  :P  :P

The soundtrack of that game is one of the best ever  :o

It deserves a great sound installation  8)

Let's go with a 2.1 system, brand new of course  :P

...of course, I will use the original Space Ace speakers :

The videodisc player, finally inside the cab'

A last test of all the setup, before fixing the stuff inside the cab...

Working without any problem  :)

Ok, I'm fixing all the needed parts inside the cab :

I fix a new powerfull fan...

...and I close the back of the cab'  8)

One part is still missing, the bracket support for plexiglass, only present on EURO DL/CAB.

I've asked to someone to build one of me. He uses the one from my Dragon's Lair cab' as a template :

Great job ( thank to my dad for the adjustment  :o  )

Ok, I paint it, fix it ... and ...

This projet is done ????

YYYYEEEEEEESSS.....Well amost

Great build, and excellent pictures.  Its a great resource.

How did you connect the controls to the PC?

Did you use an Ipac or a joystick port hack?

Or was it harder by hacking an existing keyboard?

Where you did you go to get this machine, and was there any others?

Thanks for your nice words

For the control, I use an Ipac... but you can hack a keyboard if you don't want to buy it.

Check out the road trip (on the 1st post ) to see the origin of this cab  8)
