Title: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on November 22, 2010, 04:08:17 PM
As you all know i am busy with the restauration of my Crazy kong.
in order to reproduce the CPO i need some advice from the pro's here  ;)
I did a little search and i came close, but i feel its not the correct one..
Anybody an idea what font to use for the instructioncard ?

the first is plain Arial, the second is Arial rounded MT bold

It feels like i need arial rounded without the bold...

Looks like helvetica bold to me, just with softness and artifacts from the print process.

Arial only really came into common usage years later when Microsoft included it in Windows so there's practically no chance anything from that period uses it.

Yes liquidx is right it's just some kind of helvetica with wider spacing between the letters:

If you want to be REALLY precise then you still have to look for another font, helvetica is not it.

For instance: look at the small letters a and g. In the Helvetica font, the a has a little arc on the bottom right, and the arc at the bottom of the g is wider in Helvetica than in the original. Also, the capital K is slightly different.

But if you're not too critical, I'd say Helvetica comes very close  ;)

I like to be really precisely, and i am open for suggestions too  ;)
So wich font is it you think ?

Helvetica is really comming close

Post by: McVenco on November 24, 2010, 01:52:01 PM
I'm no font expert, so I'm not sure where to look to get an exact match. Helvetica comes close indeed, but the original letters are a little bolder, and have less sharp edges. If I've got some spare time left tonight, I'll try if I can find something...

I'm pretty sure it's Helvetica Bold or a very close relative, the bold version has smaller spurs because of the weight. Also remember this was printed back in the days of phototypesetting where multiple films were often combined and hand corrected in camera to get the final result. Add the screen-printing process to that and you often get artifacts/distorsion of that type. (Yes, I'm that old. I worked in design before desktop publishing, I have the marks to prove it :) )

There are also multiple versions of helvetica. Depending on who edited that particular one, there could be differences.
You can also try its ancestors/relatives like Akzidenz-Grotesk and Univers. From memory, Univers 55 was often available on phototypesetters but I think it has a straight a.

Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Q*ris on November 25, 2010, 07:56:13 AM
Anyway we know it's Helvetica (or related), that's already something.
Like liquidx said it's a very large family with a lot of different "editions".
Might be tricky and time consuming to find the perfect one but that's not impossible.
Also in this case, I'm 100% sure the end of the letters are not rounded, it's just a distortion caused by a bad scanning.
Same for the super bold effect.
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Blanka on November 25, 2010, 10:41:01 PM
I think it is Helvetica Neue 75 Bold or 85 Heavy.

Thanx for the input
will try those as soon as i got my hands on them  ;)

I need TTF, not the mac format  ;)
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on November 26, 2010, 02:52:46 PM
And thanx to Blanka for the perfect match  :spaceace:  this has the little tail in the "a"

"Helvetica Neue Bold", thanx to chrischris for the font, and to myself for converting it from mac format to OTF wich works in windows  8)

It looks more bold, but look when i put it on top....

I think this is the one im going to use...
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Vnera on December 02, 2010, 06:42:02 PM
my sister sad:

gewoon de helvetica neue als je het mij vraagt..
de bold versie.

Heb m voor de mac, je kunt de helvetica herkennen aan de
binnenvorm van de a het is een soort druppel met puntje....

heerlijk, letters! kan er uren over praten

sorry dont feel like translating it. Its helvetica nue bold.

Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 02, 2010, 08:48:29 PM
Thanks for asking her, and yes , thats exactly what im using (like i wrote before in this threat)

so it will be a perfect match, i got the OTF installed here, so i can start typing  :D

Thank you all for helping out.
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Blanka on December 03, 2010, 08:21:22 AM
It's a deadly sin to convert TTF to OTF!!!!
TTF can be easily swapped between mac an windows, on some OS versions you need TTF converter.

OTF is the next gen format. Converting TTF to OTF is like putting a Suzuki Alto engine in a Ferrari. The Marktplaats buyer will hate you for not telling your adaptation!

If you give someone else your newly made OTF, he expects it to have all legislatures, all non-western characters, all letter-combination adaptive character spacing.... where it is just crap TTF in a new jacket.
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 03, 2010, 12:30:47 PM
it was not a TTF but a PFB font, wich windows cannot handle...
converted that to OTF..  wich works in windows..

Okay guys, again a chalenge...

I have a few areas with text.. and i dont know the font...

the word "player" looks the same as the Jump, but what about the "1 & 2" ?

this looks totally different again then the first 2...

or what about this  ???

and one last to be very anal  ;D
(http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/crazykong/vectoring/ttf/123.jpg)

Anybody ?

Thanks in advantage..  :pac:
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Q*ris on December 27, 2010, 02:46:57 PM
Player + jump= cooper black slightly redrawn or badly silkscreened.
Instructions= handmade font (check the 2 "N" are different); 1,2,3 looks handdrawn to me too; so you have to vectorize it.
"Control" I don't have time to check atm, sorry.
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 27, 2010, 03:00:49 PM
I am already happy  :-*

It is indeed Cooper Black with a custom angle.

good enough for me though:

And "player" after manual vectorising the "1 & 2"
Not bad for an amateur if you ask me  8)

sounds logic to me , but now , wichone and where to get...

Anyway , i managed to "get rid" of some layers and the original picture came underneith...

Hi Etienne, is the file you're trying to open a .psd file?
I think I can help but I need to check the file first. Is it on your FTP?
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 28, 2010, 12:14:32 PM
Yes sir, its a PSD..

Its located in the folder jungleking

already i did the tracing to vector, just need to clean up the file now, and have a good TTF for it
switzerland, or a good substitude..

Thanx!

Hi Etienne would something like that be OK? The bullet points were unfortunately lost in translation but that's an easy fix:

I'm sending you the rasterised type file on your email via "wetransfer".

@chris & etienne: thx a lot for your efforts and sorry for going off-topic here - you can always use my jungle king resto thread (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1843.0) if you like ;D
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 29, 2010, 10:50:55 AM
Thankx Chris !

now a stupid question from me..
how do i take out the text in vextor format ?
i opened in photoshop and in illustrator, but its both raster..

or do i need to trace it ?
(as you can see that gives not the desired result  :-\)

An Ully , its still in the good place i think, since this is called "True Type advice needed"

So every time someone needs a advice in a font, this should be the place

Maybe its a good idea to create a topic with only the correct types for the text needed, or something for a wiki or knowledgebase..

how do i take out the text in vextor format ?

I didn't know you needed a vector format for this text, I thought a transparent .psd would be all right since you don't have to edit the text.
The only way is then indeed to vectorise the font but as you could see the result is terrible.

So I found 2 fonts that were a close match:
Helvetica Condensed
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/fonts/JK_helvetica_cond.jpg)

Swiss 721 condensed
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/~chrischris/arcade/fonts/JK_swiss721.jpg)

I went for the swiss.
I sent you 2 illustrator files via email (one with the text vectorised and one with the text editable) + a zip with the fonts in case you'd need them.

Allright, one for the morning  :)
Helvetica Neue 75 Bold.
Sometimes you have to play a bit with the spacing between the letters to make it fit perfectly but that's definitely the right font.

I received the ultimate history of video games for christmas so that's easy. I read about it yesterday (and I'm not very far in this great book). ;)
Hint1: It's a game that raised a bit of controversy when it was released and Atari didn't really approve it's violence.
Hint2: think Sylvester Stallone & David Carradine

Etienne I've been drooling over that cab for long enough to recognize it's CP in a glance.  ;D

Did you find one? If so, I feel a strong jealousy invading my otherwise peaceful mind here  ;).

But this CP has already been vectorised here (http://vectorlib.free.fr/MissileCommand/) so why are you re-doing it?

Can't find the font, it might be handmade as part of the logo design??
...but I can email you this logo in EPS:

All you'll have to do is steal the letters to write "communications company"

Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on February 22, 2011, 01:12:27 PM
I was making the repro of the "inside coindoor stickers" from the zaccaria coindoor, and i asked you guys for TTF advice.
forget my previous post, here is the deal...

i found a repro JPG file and posted the lettertype from that in a previous post.
after looking at it, i realised that i dont like the font, and i did not remember it like this, so i went up the attic where i have a spare coindoor with the stickers and took them out for "archiving"  ;D

i placed them on a clean sheet of paper, and pulled the scanner out..

The font in the one from my coindoor is indeed different, and i think the guy who did them before just took a font
Here the shots of the one's that i found on the net:

and the second

Here is the scan of mine:  :P

as you can see its different, and i like this font more to be honest, so i will use that  8)

I did already some vectoring on the coinmech sticker, but i dont know if i wwant to use that now, or just start again with the original scans..
i am leaning towarts option 2, what you guys think ?

I adjusted it a bit, and its good enough for me.
You are on the winning hand chris , lets see if you can also name the font of the word "ZACCARIA" :

At first i thought it was Arial bold, but thats a bit different.., so thats not it..

AK11 bold extended.
I was lucky 'cause it was the first one in my list of fat font.
Weird that they don not use the "official" zacc logo font (AG Schoolbook medium alternate).

That sounds like an ideal job (for me) !

the question is , what is the correct font ?
Title: Re: True Type advice needed
Post by: Q*ris on February 28, 2011, 12:25:57 PM
No idea, sorry.
It looks handmade to me.
Maybe you could "simple trace" that one if it's just for one word.
The result is not perfect but could be acceptable with a little more tweak here and there:

I think i can work with that...

I need to p-shop it a bit and then trace..
Or do you happen to have a spare moment in your precious timetable, and then it magicly appears in vectorform in my emailbox ?

Never mind chris...  ;D

This is an Helvetica Neue Black, but in this case it's been carefully outlined by hand.
I'm sure of that because if you compare the 2 "a" they are not perfectly identical.
The result might be too perfect if you don't add a bit of handtrace in that one.
I suggest vectorizing it using only your nose to move the mouse, with your hands tied in your back.

Hi, according Nuno, there is fonts expert here ;D

Have you an idea for this font :

(http://files.gamoover.net/files/imagecache/forum_default/forum_pics/20110310104228-high_cobra-fonts.png) (http://files.gamoover.net/files/forum_pics/20110310104228-high_cobra-fonts.png)

It seems to be "EurosStyle" but the "g" was not the same...

Thanks !

The top is Helvetica Neue Bold:

The other is indeed a eurostile font family, and yes, the "g" is different, but why not "steal" the "g" from another type that comes close, and then ajust it a bit so it will fit ?

High_Cobra, here's the answer about your font (coming from a real font guru, not me ;)):
"Those characters are latin characters of a Japanese font, ゴナD (Gona D) from Shaken (写研), which is a phototype setting font and has not been released as a digital font publicly."
Good luck with that  ::)

It's the 55 Roman but I had to play a lot with the spacing between the letters to make it fit (tracking).

I used the "font tracking" tool but in this case you did the right thing by outlining and moving them "by hand" because the spacings are really weird and sometimes uneven.

Its more accurate than the twentieth-century-poster-mt, only one problem..
its a "Light" version, and not the bold..

Signage of many historic landmarks in Hollywood are in this style.
Deco fonts were used in early movie posters almost exclusively in the golden era of Hollywood, during the golden age of travel, by Walt Disney for signage in Disneyland, etc.. (quoted from MaryEllen Schrock).
Perfect choice for let's say an old school californian licence plate for instance  ::)...

guys, i am looking for a better pic of this logo, or in the best case a vector or font:

it does not have to have the lines, a outline is fine.

i want to create this decal, thats why i need it :

any help is much appriciated  ;)

Edit: just noticed it's way too fat compared to what you're looking for.
I'll send you a new link tomorrow with a better version.
