HELL YEAH !!!!
-
don't tell this to the guys on KLOV, they are literally crucifying people who still order from RAM controls!!!
-
There I was....thinking that the USA was the "land of the free"....
it was this or nothing. And I already said I would order there if it would be the only source.
-
people who still order from RAM controls!!!
There is people who still order from RAM controls  ?
Well, that's such pain in the ass of all the community !
-
YES ! Lets beat that dead horse some more !! Comeon give it all you got !
-
Or....let's discuss this magnificant piece of craftsmanship....
...it actually surprised me that the thing is spring loaded....Somehow I thought it would simply stay in any position you leave it, but it doesn't, it returns to the bottom position when you remove your hand.....which figures of course. It was also even bigger than I thought it would be.
-
You know what it is, lots of people still order there and get their stuff, but they keep silent about it. Thats their good right, but I have been clear enough about my position on this forum in the past and I am think I am entitled to my own decisions.
This is going to be a fun project.
Cabinet from Belgium
Monitor and AR-I from France
Power Brick from Hungary
and the rest from the US I bet....
-
Glad you received it, see it's just a question of thrust...

Glad you received it, see it's just a question of thrust...
Excellent word joke. ;D

Looks great.
not going to debate the ram issue ;)
-
Can't wait to see that "international" creation. ;D
-
Cool that you received the parts, maybe you should also try your luck at Holland Casino> ;D ;) ;)

Cool that you received the parts, maybe you should also try your luck at Holland Casino> ;D ;) ;)
Mmmm, I'm not a big gambler....so I built in a little "insurance" in this deal....

Wow!!! Looks GREAT!!!!
Cant wait to see the final product!! :spaceace: :spaceace:

whats it for?

For my boat.
-
Nah not really.....its for a Lunar Lander.....

That thruster is going to fit in this:
So, for every Asteroids owner who ever wondered why the heck 95% of the Asteroids CP is empty (and thus not too comfy to play....(wrong angle top), this explains it:
it was meant to house the huge thruster _and_ the back-lit mission indications on Lunar Lander.....
And here's the heart of the system......a pretty rare piece of hardware and thus not cheap.....but it's working (at least it was when the seller tested it.....)

I can not wait to see it ;)
-
This may well become the longest running thread ever as I see this as a long term project.
You have all seen I have been aquiring parts to make a Lunar Land out of a converted Asteroids cab, but there was no "central" thread for it yet...
Anyway, I just found a great posting from Dokert on how to test Atari Power Bricks and AR1s. I definitly will need to do this first BEFORE connecting them to my precious LL pcb since I dont know the condition on either the brick nor the AR1.
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showpost.php?p=1073965&postcount=5
-
nice link, andré, i missed that! good luck with your project, of course i'll be following it closely!!! :spaceace:
-
Is the LL from Archer?
-
Is the LL from Archer?
Yup.
-
Uh, well Bruno decided to merge this into this thread, but I intended to start a dedicated thread for the Lunar Lander project because the other was (originally) only about getting the thruster and didn't have an appropriate title. I wanted to add all the info (links) to the various threads that are about the thruster, the power brick, the AR1 and the cab, but no problems I will do that in this thread now and adjust the title a bit...
[Edit] uhhh, I can't edit the title of the first post anymore ?
-
Alright Bruno will change the name of this thread, hope you guys don't get confused now ;) ;)
By the way, it's such a great name: Lunar Lander. So very basic and yet again it has something magic about it, it sounds great.
Well, like the real Apollo project this is going to be a long one :) I'm sure it will be one small step to start a game at the end, but it will be a major leap to get there ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
When i was picking up the QQ at Archer´s place i had a closer look at his LL, and i must say, there´s something about that thrust handle! Beautiful cab, very basic setup! - simpler is sometimes better!!!!
-
Yeah. I remember as a kid I was TOTALLY attracted by that handle. You know, about the same like every game that had a steering wheel. I mean these machines gave you the chance to operate real life machines you were not allowed to handle yet (or ever in the case of a space craft) and a child's imagination easily makes you think you really ARE the master of that ship ;)
My son and some friends sometimes played that my game room was a space ship, and they were traveling through intergalactic space and every child had his set of controls to do certain (SW like) things. They loved playing like that and the machines were all off :P Nothing better than a child's imagination, it's sad that the real world often messes it up when growing up.....
I loved LL BITD although I remember it seeing and playing only once.
-
Gee.....I totally love www.mikesarcade.com !
After first finding that excellent label creator for jukebox titles, now I find this:
http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/artwork/asteroids_bezel.pdf
It's a scanned version of the Asteroids bezel which will work perfectly as a template for my (black) Lunar Lander bezel :) :) :)
I also found out that I still needed this:
for the mission lights...looks like they will be done again and they are affordable:
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=221186
I still can't justify the $110 for the back-board that carries the lamps though (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=208681&highlight=lunar+lander+mission). I can see why they are this price because of the very low number run, but I still think making a vero-board version saves a lot of money...and this project is expensive enough as it is :S
Now.....if anyone knows an affordable owl-eye coin door anywhere, I'm 100% set (harness will hopefully be done by Dokert in the US !)
-
Mmmmmmmmmmm I acquired another item for this project......mmmmm yes yes :D
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/101041/Wega-20Zwart-20Wit-20TV/web.jpg?ver=13331338690001)
-
Is it a vector monitor?
-
So what parts are still missing? Marquee, side art, cpo, wiring harness and power supply?
You better make sure we can play this at Eurocade2012! ;D ;) ;)
-
Is it a vector monitor?
Uh....LOL !!!! It is a nice, working German built WEGA (when WEGA wasn't owned by Sony yet) B/W TV.
Of course, as every TV, it is a raster device.
But...as you know....a tube is a tube. And a B/W tube with no burn in with the right size is a nice candidate for transplantation !
I must say it is going to hurt me a bit to do it on this TV. I mean have a good look at the design.....it looks very tight for a 70's TV right ? I mean, most TV's used bulky dials and had woodgrain exterior. I bet this was a design TV in those days.
As a matter of fact.....the white, the minimal design..........does it remind you of something ? Mmmm--mmm yep. It reminds you of a Mac....well at least it did to me....and then I checked this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WEGA
...and read that the designer at WEGA was Hartmut Esslinger and when we check out this guy on Wikipedia it turns out that he was the man behind the tight white design of the first Macs and Apple Iic....man....that I recognized that design style ! :)
Now isn't that a nice story ;)
Anyway....it took me a LOT of searching to find a 48cm. (19") working B/W TV and I scored it in Germany where it will be picked up soon by a good friend :)
B/W TVs being offered on places like Marktplaats usually are either small portable one's or very large one's...
@Gyruss:
Missing parts in that I still have to order (or become available to order) ?
Dokert has already made the CP harnesses. He will be doing the full harness later and I asked him to ship them together.
I will need a cardboard bezel but should be possible to make it myself.
Also the wooden support for the mission lights and either make a PCB with those lights or fork up the 110 bux for the repro one...
Also need is a marquee and (maybe later) side art...
That's it, the rest is here, o I do have to check if I still have enough cones and buttons for the CP. And of course I need the CPO....
In theory everything is possible....with a little help from my friends ;) ;)
Things still to arrive at my home are the Power Brick (which I foolishly forgot at Chris's) and the AR-1 board which was hopefully picked up by Franck in Paris....that one somehow still has to enter the EADS system ;)
-
Weirdest arcade part ever arrived ;)

Great I love cheese sandwiches and I'm sure I will buy one soon.... ;D ;D

In theory everything is possible....with a little help from my friends ;) ;)
Well, I happen to have this one:
I gave it a good clean job today and I must say that it is in excellent condition, not NOS but very great (the white glinstering is the reflection of the lights above the table) and original of course. I got it together with some other classic marquees and I´m planning to use them as decoration in my gameroom. :)
But I actually think that this particular one will look much nicer in a cab! :D
So André, if you want it, it´s yours, a donation for your project. ;D
You have to do one thing though, just mention here out loud that Japanese Candy cabs are not that bad after all and that you can understand it and appreciate it that people love them and that they keep the Japanese Arcade spirit alive.
I know, it´s a hard thing to do, but the reward is this:
-
LOL ;D ;D ;D :spaceace:
-
I'm sorry, I do have my principles..........
But I have no trouble at all shouting here that Japanese Candy cabs are not that bad after all and I can understand it and appreciate it that people love them and that they keep the Japanese Arcade spirit alive
-
P.S. DAMN that is nice of you Erik !!!!
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
OK, well done. ;D
Consider the LL marquee yours. :)
-
Great community we have! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
LOL! And a very nice gesture from ckong. Thumbs up! :)
-
Nice gesture :spaceace:
-
....and great timing ! I could use a bit of a good thing happening tonight.....the WG6100 deflection boards don't exactly make me very happy at the moment....
The worst part is that I have to test them in the game room at the back of my SW cockpit on my knees with almost no space to move between the other cabs and.....well you get the idea....
I need a vector generator !! :S
Apart from that I dropped my HV meter and the box totally cracked....
So....thank you Erik to put a ;D on my face again ;)
-
Wow, that looks almost nos that LL marquee!!! Youre indeed a good frind Erik!! :spaceace:
-
wonderful gesture, erik! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Wow, that looks almost nos that LL marquee!!! Youre indeed a good frind Erik!! :spaceace:
+1000......and the extra special thing about this is that there are no repro's available of it yet !!! And I had absolutely no clue that Erik had one ;D ;D
-
+1000......and the extra special thing about this is that there are no repro's available of it yet !!! And I had absolutely no clue that Erik had one ;D ;D
Perhaps someone can vectorize it?
-
No, I hear he's busy with older projects ;);)
-
Always interested in scans ;)
-
Just ordered
http://phoenixarcade.com/images/LL1.JPG
and it comes with this too:
http://phoenixarcade.com/images/LL9.JPG
form Phoenixarcade. When it arrives I can start assembling the CP. I still need to look if I have enough Atari cones and buttons....don't think so...also need to see what bolts etc I need.
The CP harness is done and waiting to be shipped...
-
Resize pics please, i dont have a 36" widescreen laptop here.. ;D
-
Removed IMG tags so click at will :)
Sorry, I sometimes forget that not everyone has a 27" iMac ;D ;D ;D ;D
I hope I can fix everything with metric sized hardware. Luckily the bolts and nuts for the thruster were included with it :)
-
Ah, you linked directly to the pic they had..
anyway, i fixed it for you ;)
-
Yeah and Safari on my iPad auto resizes it to fit....pretty handy :)
-
Received the CPO and Mission Control bezel. No customs 'problems' this time :)
First, I had to prepare the CP a bit. Although it looks nice and was powder coated (I think) it had some marks from the long storage I guess that needed to be fixed:
And the worst one...
You can also see some pits on the top right of that picture. These were on more spots on the panel and I didn't want my CPO to look bumpy so I sanded those parts. Your hands are your friends here....feel if everything is smooth ;)
Spray painted two layers on everything and after some drying it was all smooth enough.
So let's start to put the CPO on. First I use my preferred method of fixing it. With all the large holes and with the sheer size of the CP, this is not an easy CPO to do, but it went quite well.
Alligned the CPO as good as possible. Then I flipped over the lowest part and cut away the protection as far as I could and pushed everything from the center to the sides and top to bottom:
Then I removed the buttons and folded back the top part and removed a part of the protection (about 5 cm.):
I steadily moved up, removing about 5 cm of covering every time while smoothing out the vinyl over the panel with my hands from center to sides and working upwards.
Then turned it around and did the front side the same way:
Then I had to turn it around again to make the "180 degree" fold over on the top edge of the panel. I shortly considered cutting it there but figured this would be the better (though much harder) choice. It was really tough to get it to fold that tight AND stay stuck to the other side of the panel "lip". I decided to use my wife's hairdryer which made it a bit easier. This was the only time I had to fight some air bubbles.
Final result:
And installed a tiny little thing that needs to go in there:
-
As you can see there's a small bump next to where the top right bolt will go. I have no idea how it got there but it's too late to get it out now...
Now....I should be very happy but I am not completely happy. However I will have to discuss this with the seller of the artwork first.
-
It looks good if you ask me :)
-
beautiful!
-
Great job, hope to see it live at Eurocade. ;)

Looks good

What is that pcb for?
Béla, Lunar Lander has a lot of huge holes in the CP as you have noted. Under this there is a "Mission light bezel".
The bezel has pictures and text explaining the various missions you can choose.
Under that bezel there is this piece of wood:
This is there to keep the light of the bulbs for that single mission picture only (a "mask" is the correct name I suppose).
Under that there is this PCB I got from e-bay.
It is a very simple PCB electronically. It's just a connector, 2 diodes for the lamp that is permanently on (to lower the voltage a bit) and 4 transistors for the lights that "blink" or get selected. And of course the lamp holders.
Further the PCB probably also acts (not sure) to keep the light in too.
Since these PCBs are often missing because of LL to Asteroids conversions or because some people are converting Asteroids cabs to LL ;) there was a small run of these made by DJW90 on the KLOV forum. Because of the large PCB size and the very small run, the price of them was pretty high (for a simple thing electronically speaking). However, DJW90 actually tipped me off about this original one on e-bay !
Here's a video of one of these in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5o0XFqwOww
Here's a video where you can see the lights (although not up close):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJLmXildv2E
When you choose a mission, that one will light up. The one on the far left is constantly lit. Some weird people put LEDs in there (YUGH !). The only advantage of that is that it keeps cooler, but I want the original look, so bulbs it will be :)
My "plan B" was to buy some vero-board ("gaatjesprint" as Etienne said) and simply wire it up and make it myself basically. However, in the first place I didn't find a large enough vero-board (by a couple of cm.) and apart from that, the parts are still adding up too, plus it would take a lot of time !
So, this was a perfect chance, that is, until I got the message saying that the shipping to me directly would be 58 USD !!!!!!!
That sounds pretty crazy. Maybe I will "reroute" it via my uncle & aunt.....if CKONG could pick it up at their place..... ;) No, just kidding about that :)
-
Nice explanation, thanks André! :D
-
Hey guys, did you see that I actually found an owl-eye coin door for my LL project ? The "bad" thing was....that there was a whole cab "attached" to it....
So here are some pics of that cab:

Regretfully people, there will be no heroic road-trip pics for picking this up. It was too far away for me to pick up in one day and I was somewhat in a hurry to get it.
Luckily I found a transport guy through UKvac who will bring it from the UK to the low countries....
What's that ....? What you say ?? You want to see the sides ??
Ahhh, yeahh...mmm OK !

-
Wooowwww !!! Gorgeous !!!
-
You really have the arcade gods on your side, look in what timeframe you got all the parts you need !
Great deal though, buy a coindoor, and end up with a cabinet which was still around it and which has the correct sidearts ;D
-
Yep....it is almost a miracle !
As so often the story is a bit longer about this cab. Some weeks after I bought the Asteroids shell from ChrisChrisChrisChrisChris I was contacted by "someone in the family" about this cab being for sale. He considered buying it but was unsure about getting all the parts for it and decided to tip me about it.
I had to think some time about it because I really don't have anymore space for cabs and already had the Asteroids shell of course.
However...the longer I thought about it, the better this offer was:
First of all, I will not have to buy side-art for it. As the pics show the side are in good shape. On side has some scratches but for me this is about the same condition as my Galaxian and I don't feel the need to replace it.
Second, I didn't need a Lunar Lander harness anymore. I had already ordered it from Dokert on KLOV forum, but I messaged him about this find and he understood and had no problem with me canceling my main harness. The Control Panel harness however I still need and was already waiting to be shipped.
Anyway, if I add those two things up I already get pretty far towards the price I had to pay for the LL. Apart from that it of course has the original coin door and well.....it IS an original Lunar Lander cab, and what can possibly be better than bringing that back to it's old glory ?
But the advantages didn't stop there. Since the LL had been converted to Asteroids it has the Asteroids marquee and CP already. OK, the CP will need a good restoration, but it's certainly doable. So...with the monitor from Remi that I fixed, plus the working Asteroids PCB I already bought YEARS ago plus the power brick from Béla and the ARI board from Remi I should be able to turn this into an (at least) running Asteroids !! I will need an Asteroids harness and of course bezel, but those are pretty easy to get.
So, this was a win-win-win situation for me.
Now I have a couple of options:
1) Restore the Asteroids completely and sell my Asterock
2) Restore the Asteroids completely and sell it and keep the Asterock
3) Make the Asteroids running and sell as project cab
You guys know I have a weak spot for bootlegs, and Sidam definitely stole my heart because of their quality in design, cab-build quality and PCB quality. I also love the CP because it's more comfortable than the original (If you see LL, you finally understand why Asteroids had such an insanely large CP for just 5 buttons). And the Asterock is simply in a very very nice condition and I will have to invest a lot of time (and some money) to get the Asteroids back into shape....so yet _another_ project cab...
Another plus of the Asterock is that it is a decent size, which is nice in my small gameroom.
However....the thought of having an original Asteroids and a Lunar Lander cab right next to each other does make me feel a bit tingly inside ;)
Now....there was one more nice thing included in this deal......and that is this ;D ;D ;D:
-
You lucky bastard!! :o :o Everything falls right into place, you must feel pretty good! ;D
Keep the asteroids, it's too iconic to let go. Asterock is nice, but still a (cool) bootleg.
Will the LL be ready for eurocade?
-
Did you see what that PCB is ? It's a Lunar Lander, but converted to Asteroids ! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Probably the most valuable Asteroids board ever (apart from the LL board that was "hacked" into Asteroids at Atari)
The interesting thing is: WHO hacked this ? Is this a bootleg job ? Has anyone ever seen it before ? And of course the question jumps to mind: Can I convert it back, or maybe make it switchable (that will probably be tough) ??
It's unknown if it works though...
One thing I forgot: I do have to thank the "member of the family" here for tipping me about this great cab !!!!!!!!!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :space ace:
Well, let's assume that the LL PCB from Archer works, then I see little reason for it to not be ready for Eurocade :) :)
-
Congrats :)
The pcb looks factory converted to Asteroids
-
Yeah, it does look like a very professional job.
The board doesn't have an Atari markings though. Have you seen others converted like this ?
-
No real proof yet that it's a factory conversion. The Asteroids marque/CP has no Atari logo, neither does the top side of the daughter card on the PCB. No Atari labels at all. That said, who ever did it did a professional job using the Atari artwork and it's hard to imagine a 3rd party doing an LL conversion kit this neatly (or an op installing it this neatly). If there are op magazines from that era, it'd be worth going over them to see if anyone offered a kit like this in the small ads. It'd also be interesting to see if there is an Atari logo or part code etched in the metal on the underside of the daughterboard...
A bit of an oddity that cab. Spotted in the local paper, it came out of someones house in East Anglia in the late 90's. Both monitor and PCB dead. Got the monitor going and did a custom adaptor to run the Asteroids Delux PCB in it (preserving the LL wiring). It was running at my "leaving for the US meet" in 2000 but ended the day with vertical collapse. It's the very-different first edition of the G05 - I'm not even sure if it's the same wiring or power as the later Asteroids G05.
Paul.
-
Thanks for commenting Paul :) And thanks for a great deal !!!
Yeah that job has not the typical "op" trademarks ;) It would sure be pretty special if it is factory I guess.... :)
I don't worry about the monitor at all. Pretty sure I'll get it running fine, got some experience with the G05's in my Asterock and the one from Remi now :)
In all honesty, I think the older G05-801 looks to be a better design than the later G05-802. It has proper heat-sinks for both the power transistors (which were later replaced by the huge resistors on the deflection PCB on the -802) and the deflection transistors. I like that idea much more than using the frame of the monitor, which isn't exactly a great type of metal ("pisbakken staal" we call it ;)) compared to the aluminum and specially shaped heat-sinks...
Of course I have no experience with the 801 yet, but from what I've read in the manual and seen on pics on the net I'd say all the changes on the -802 were done for cost reduction reasons...
I'll do everything possible to keep the original monitor in ! :)
The 802 has different connectors then the 801. There are adapters though so it's not hard to change if I really MUST swap it out...
I'm very glad you made that LL to AD adapter and didn't hack the harness :) :)
-
Re: old G05 - it has one unfortunate flaw - when the deflection transitors blow short it's supposed to blow the fuse however what actually happens is that it blows the power supply transistor along with the fuse. Found that the hard way - fixed the blown power supply so it was working nice, plugged in the deflection PCB and the fuse pops and kills the power supply transistor again. >:(
I did dump the ROMS from that LL PCB but I'm not sure if the dump is good or if they ended up in MAME. I remember running them up in MAME and got something out of them.
Re: The Asty Delux PCB - it has the audio output level resistors changed on the PCB to make it compatible with the LL AR PCB. If you ever need to use it in an Asty Delux cab, you'll need to change the resistors back for the correct audio output level.
Paul.
-
Ah ! Thanks for the tips !
-
Nice and really lucky find André! :o
I would definitely keep the Asteroids cab, the Asterock looks very nice and tidy indeed and we all know, that you put a lot of energy to make it perfect, but a LL and an Asteroids next to each other would be kick-ass! :D
-
Great stuff going on here! :)
AFAIK, Speleo is looking for an empty Asteroids cab ;) ;D
-
Yeah I know, but he had the chance of buying it _before_ I did...
plus....I first want to get it running to see if it's possible to get a good working machine out of it. I think my mind is made up :)
Anyone interested in my Asterock ?
The LL has been picked up and should arrive late afternoon/early evening :)
I have been going through a struggle with the seller of that mission lights board. As mentioned he wanted a crazy 58 dollars for shipping. I sent him 3 messages through e-bay asking him to ship it to my uncle & aunt in the US but I think he was scared of my being a scammer or something.
He finally agreed now to ship it to them though ! pffffff.....
The CP harness should start on it's way today too...gonna order a nice new piece of plexi as a bezel, although I still would love to find glass that is tinted AND anti-glare but I've been searching for it before without much results....
-
Ladies & Gentlemen......the Eagle has landed ! :):)
-
Pics or it didnt happen ;)

Ladies & Gentlemen......the Eagle has landed ! :):)
Wow, this sure is a speedy process you have going there my friend! - i´m sure it will be playable on EC12!!! :spaceace: :spaceace:

Well....I was away this "Pinksterweekend" for another great hobby, we competed again at the "Mars en Showedstrijden" in Hamon Belgium (www.marsenshow.be) and had three days of brilliant fun....and scored a very nice 92,10 points but did not prolong our championship of 2 years ago....but we were very satisfied with the result because the preparation was far from optimal.
Anyway, on saturday evening Thomas delivered the machine at our home. Have to thank Yolanda (Eurocade visitors probably know her) for helping lifting it out of the van because Wilma is unable to ATM. Luckily the machine has 4 wheels so it was very easy for Thomas to put it in the game room.
If you ever need transport from the UK to mainland Europe, you can contact him, here's his website:
http://tgbservices.co.uk/
Communication was absolutely perfect, almost direct replies to all e-mails, pick-up and delivery as promised, fair price, I recommend him.
So when I got back home yesterday evening I was so tired I didn't even had a look (which says pretty much how tired I was). But today I had taken the day off because I knew I would be pretty wrecked so here are the first pics:

Looks like you need #13b, #14 and #14a ;) (only with the 230 volts instead of 115..)
Funny thing, i just checked the statuspage on klov and guess what i saw there ;D
-
Very cool! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Lucky find, I guess Thomas is the same guy who took the Joust 2 from me. :D
-
Yeah, he seems to do a lot of work to Hungary, he was heading there now too.
Did some first checking. Replaced the UK with a European plug and took the plunge. I have neck-glow but that's it. Red LED on the spotkiller so probably no signal coming from the AD board.
There's a red LED on the AD board though.
Checking out the machine brings me to the conclusion that this is NOT a factory modded cab.
Why? Well here we go:
Exhibit a:
The monitor has a clear burn of Lunar Lander. It's not too clear on this picture, but I can see the "mountain" of LL and on top you can see texts like "Altitude" "Velocity" etc. All signs of that it has run as a LL for a long time. There is also Asteroids burn though, so it has been running (apparently still a shorter time because it is less) as Asteroids for some time too.
Exhibit b:
Just another Asteroids maquee right ? Wrong.....where is the Atari logo ?? Not to mention the copyright text.....
Exhibit c:
If you look at this picture you can see that the Asteroids artwork is on a thick layer. First I thought it was one of those "short" version CPO's from Arcadeshop.com but it was too thick.
Also: there is a white line around the artwork AND the game's instructions, which normally are on the bezel, are printed on this CPO !
So I removed it to see what was under it. The lead me to
Exhibit d:
{WARNING, THIS EXHIBIT MAYBE SHOCKING TO CLASSIC ARCADE MACHINE LOVERS !}
Ouch. Is that sad or what ? Maybe I can cut-out the Atari logo and make it a key-hanger ? everything else is close to EOL.
All this proves to me that it left the factory (in the US, see the serial stickers) as a Lunar Lander and was operated that way for quite some time. Then it was converted with apparently a bootleg kit.
-
Some more pics, "as is" when received:

Worst part of the side-art....I may try some touching up. I'm not annoyed by it at all, knew it was there and IMHO there's little wrong with it, it's like wrinkles on a human...
And then I couldn't resist to try this:
I just put it on loosely to have a look...

Aggghhhhhhrrrr the horror !
Looks cool with the replacement in place , even if its just loose in there !
-
Man, that control panel (the new one) looks so bad ass!
The sides look pretty good too!
-
Yeah, the sides are in very good condition, I guess some touch ups will make it close to perfect. :D
The keychain idea is also great, there is not too much people with an original LL cp Atari logo in his pocket. ;D
-
Glad it arrived safely, it'll look great when it's restored :) Your new CP is gorgeous ;D
Paul.
-
Nooo, that destroyed LL CP is soo sad to look at, maby Mr. Vector king can use it for a better repro (looks like the colors are intact..)
Anyways, had some time today to scan my LL CPO, heres the result (scanned at 300 DPI - and sorry for the big pictures...)
Saved with compression rate 0
(http://www.opdenkelder.com/muerto/arc/LL_scan01.jpg)
MACRO: Saved with compression rate 12
(http://www.opdenkelder.com/muerto/arc/LL_scan02.jpg)
LMK if i should scan the entire CPO...
Later today ill attempt to scan the Mission Select Plexi...
-EDIT-
Have scanned the Mission Select Plexi, but it´s not that good a scan because it´s 6mm of plexi before the printed stuff... :-\
But here it is anyways...
200 DPI scan, compression rate 6:

Funny thing, i just checked the statuspage on klov and guess what i saw there ;D
The magic just keeps happening !!! Thanks mate !!
-
.. did you have time to check your CPO against mine??
-
Nooo, that destroyed LL CP is soo sad to look at, maby Mr. Vector king can use it for a better repro (looks like the colors are intact..)
No offence, but mr vector king is a bit busy for new projects ;)
I see i dont need to download the scans, since they are already on my server ;D
-
.. did you have time to check your CPO against mine??
Very quickly and first impression is that it is the same as mine....will have a good look tonight.
-
LMK if i should scan the entire CPO...
just a few words to LYK that I'm interested in the scans for the entire CPO ;-)

Some progress yesterday:
After sanding. This cab is so freaking huge that I had to stand on some steps to reach the top !
Almost everything (incl. the top) is vinyl but the big angled part on top is simply painted and it's el-cheapo fiber board...
First use of the "Verfkoning" paint. EXCELLENT stuff...covers really nice and rolls-out great. It looks rough, but that is how it was and is supposed to be. I painted the part where the vinyl will come too to prevent any bare edges...
And while I was going "Back to black" anyway....there was a lady in need around:
It looked great when I did it, but it looks like the flash-picture reveals some dirt on esp. the back panel. Will have to check after drying and maybe to an extra layer....
Some more pics:
Marquee from the back....needs the usual cleaning:
The fluorescent was disconnected, not sure if there's something wrong. Will give it a try and clean today.
Erik, this gaping hole is waiting for your beautiful marquee !!! ;D ;D ;D
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/101041/DSCF0223/web.jpg?ver=13387188550001)
Original speaker looks good still. Atari went cheap and NAILED it into place which makes it hard to clean. Let's hope it doesn't rattle...I wonder why there was an extra (smaller) hole. Is it supposed to be a bass-port maybe ?
Definitly the largest speaker grill I've seen so far. I already managed to get the dent out of it for 98%.
The marquee retainers are in the worst condition I've ever seen. Been sanding ilke crazy on the top one but the rust is DEEP into the metal....
(Sorry for out of focus picture):
Some more Ms.Pac work in between. Bondo and I. Not sure if we ever become friends. It looked like I filled in the holes completely, but after drying and started to sand I still see "dents" in it so I'll have to Bondo again...
While I was working, this was filling up in the backyard....bought a new one as on the old one I kept fixing holes...They didn't have the same size (3m) so now we got the 3,60m one, which is also 15 cm higher.....6800 liters of water right in front of my gameroom !!! Let's hope it won't explode ;)
-
LOL
No, you don't want a watefflood there, would be devistating.
By tbe way, I will bring the marquee later this month.
-
I'll of course let you have the honor of installing it officially :P
-
Youre quite the daredevil with that pool infront of the gameroom!!!!!   Fingers crossed that the water stays on the right side of the rubber! ;)
-
I hope the weather will be again like last week, then i will bring my swimming shorts at the Eurocade Crew meeting :D
-
No worries, I've had the same (but smaller) pool for years, nothing happened apart from tiny holes...
So how is YOUR progress Michael ?? ;D
It was raining and cold today but I could work a bit on parts and stuff....
First do the basics: checked the Power Brick. To my surprise the blue plug (220V) was installed, kinda weird since it came from the UK where they used to have 240VAC. Since we are all at 230VAC now I changed it over to the brown wired plug.
Checked all fuses=> OK
Checked all voltages => OK
I removed the ARI board and checked all caps and transistors => OK (Power Transistor looks a bit rusted, but it works....will work on that later)
The fluorescent set-up. Looks like it still has the original starter...tube is from Osram Made in Germany so probably replaced at one point in time. It was very hard to clean it, it's OK. This was BEFORE cleaning:
Installed it and it works fine. => OK
Had a look at the CP because I had to glue one of the LED "Cone" switches.
24 pin plug.....yep that's correct for Lunar Lander harness...
"Carefully" modded to Asteroids....
If you saw the CPO, you know the cones were used as cigarette supports....sigh. EOL for them....still have enough on stock luckily....
Tested the LEDs => OK
While removing the CP board I had only one button to go and it slipped, in the process breaking off the "screw top" of this switch. We all know these are relatively valuable switches so I figured it was worth trying to glue it back...:
The G05-801 deflection board. Really a lot different from the -802. The two blue caps have been replaced in one point in time, they measure good, as does the old one on the right.
Did some firsts quick checking of transistors and diodes and they seem to be OK...
SO....I hooked everything back up. I wanted to see if I could get some life out of it....
I measured the voltages coming from the ARI => OK.
Hooked up the AD board again. Not OK. Board LED lights but so does the spot killer LED on the deflection board, which means no X-Y signal coming from the board.
So....I did a check on all the wires on the edge connector. Not that there was much reason but I thought better safe than sorry. It all looked OK apart from some extra hacked in GND connector (for testing ?) but it should work.
So I decided to put in the LL hacked to Asteroids PCB in. I got a loud buzz tone but nothing else. Not working either...
Now, I could have put in my 100% working Asteroids board but I figured what the heck and moved in the LL PCB I bought from Archer....
And this was the result:
http://youtu.be/3NE1SHl_oVo
OK it looks "squashed" a bit horizontally but we have something running ! The picture is weird though...not sure if this is only the monitor or maybe something on the board. I'll have to put in the working Asteroids board to see what happens....but I'm already pretty happy ;)
-
Those are my repairs, the new components are one's I fitted. Looks like it doesn't have the vertical collapse it once had, so maybe that was a board issue. Might need the rest of the caps doing, or it has a partly bad transistor in the pre-amp section. Looks like the power amps are OK. Looking not too far off being a runner, though :)
-
So how is YOUR progress Michael ?? ;D
It´s still in the garage, not going to do anything with it before i get to Denmark......
Video looking good, it looks like theres some vertical "black holes", maby it´s a monitor issue??
-
There's a Lunar Lander marque on Ebay DE btw:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280893718573&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280893718573&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123)
Paul.
-
Ssssssssssshhhhhtt......Erik may read this ! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I just "tossed" in my 100% working Asteroids board and it shows a similar picture like the Lunar Lander board does so it's definitly a monitor issue.
I have a feeling that it may be power supply related...don't know why though...
Of course I could toss in the spare G05-802 that I totally reworked some time ago in there, but that would be cheating wouldn't it ?
Of course if it wasn't for the different connectors I would have already tried...I'd need one of those adapters from BR:
-
"You've got mail"
But not e-mail:
Uhhhh, OK I know where all these wires and connectors go but....I don't think remember seeing these in the LL Service Manual:
Wonka !! Ahhhhh, how suiting ! After all, are we arcade game collectors not just kids living a dream.......yes we are ! :)
I wonder if they are ever-lasting.... :P
Another nice and cool detail:
So...if you ever find a Lunar Lander in 2079, you will know it once was mine because it has CP harness #10 ;D ;D ;D
And OK OK, Atari was from Amercia, the real Apollo project was from Amercia (if not from Hollywood...still Amercia), so I shouldn't object too much to the flip-side showing the Amercian flag. ;D ;D ;D
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/101041/DSCF0247/web.jpg?ver=13390037580001)
HUGE :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: for Dokert from KLOV for making these !!!! It looks totally incredible in every possible way. It's correct up to the every wire color (which is great since you can use the manual colors to connect it....)
-
I'll say hi to Dok for you when I see him at the show tomorrow :)
Paul.
-
Damn.....<insert serious jealousy here !!>.
Please do !
-
I'll say hi to Dok tomorrow too. :)
-
Damn Damn.....<insert even more serious jealousy here !!>. ;D ;D
Well guys you are all invited to Eurocade 2012 of course ;)
-
Barry, could you do a "BR" order for me ? Gonna need the the G05-801 to -802 and vice versa harnesses plus some more stuff maybe....

Barry, could you do a "BR" order for me ? Gonna need the the G05-801 to -802 and vice versa harnesses plus some more stuff maybe....
Please, would you place the same order for me, as i have a LL to... ill se e if i can reach Dokert, and get me one of those LL CP harnesses....
-
Here's the thread about the LL CP Harness from Dokert. You sure you need one ?
Same for the monitor harnesses, you will only need them if you are going to switch between monitors....

I agree....should we share shipping from the US or not ? Maybe ship to me and you pickup on Eurocade or is that too late for you ?

That perfect André, as i wont get time to do anything with it then next 3-4 months. just tell me how much i need to transfer to yout PayPal!
-
Do you need anything else ? I am looking into ordering light bulbs for the mission light panel (think you ordered one of the repro's, those come with the lamps IIRC.
Also looking into bolts, washers etc. Let me know if/what you need.
-
Seems like the marquue worth a nice price. :D

Look like I'll be buying Erik beer all day at Eurocade.....as a bonus I provide free overnight stay and breakfasts :P
And I will NEVER understand people who start bidding so long before the end....
I won the LL mission light PCB (which has arrived at my uncle & aunt in Massachusetts) by entering my highest offer (75 bucks) just before the end. It very quickly went up and my competitor(s) obviously had a highest bid of 50 because I won it at 51.... :P
Anyway, about parts:
The mission light PCB is missing the bulbs. The manual says they are #1816 bulbs. These are specced at 13V 0,33A. Usually over here lamps are indicated with watts instead of Amps, so P=UxI, P=13x0,33=
4,29 Watt.
I can't find 13V type BA9s (socket size) lamps here, but 12V at 4W plenty. If we recalculate:
I=P/U, I=4/12=0,33 so exactly the same current.
Cheapest one's I found so far are available here:
http://www.truckdesign.eu/gloeilamp-12v-4w-lampvoet-ba9s.html?___store=en&___from_store=default
(price excludes 19% VAT)
and wattayaknow......they have a store right here in the European Arcade Capital so no shipping costs. They are open tomorrow morning and it's almost around the corner for me :)
Michael let me know if you want some too...
-
Erik will be drunk! :D
-
No, I'm offering it because he is a limited drinker ;);););)
-
Lamps were on stock and cost me €4.57 for 10. Most prices were between 70 and 95 cents each, and those werent even Philips :)
-
Time for some updates ! Last week I got this nice box sent by my uncle & aunt who live in Massachusetts:
The seller of this on eBay wanted to charge me a whopping 58 dollars to ship it directly to me. For this reason I had a very tough communication with him going on to ship it to my uncle & aunt to which he finally agreed.
Now look what my aunt paid for shipping it to me:
It is even (a little bit) LESS than he charged me for shipping it within the US.....
O well....I still saved 50% on the shipping costs and apart from the money, it's the more the idea of not getting screwed over....
In fact, to be totally honest, since my aunt doesn't have PayPal (!) and she said it was so little money, she told me to forget about it.....so I answered I would buy them an extra Belgian beer the next time they are here ;)
Anyway what was in there:
Yessss...
On top the lamps I bought practically around the corner...
Examined the board and found that one transistor had two cracked solderings (I could move the transistor freely...)
So, I decided to re-do ALL (no too many luckily) the solderings on the board. I even removed the lamp-holders so I could clean the board under them....I figured I was soldering now anyway ;)
Good complete cleaning done, lamps installed and ready for 35 more years (at least ;)):
-
I also removed the monitor. This was the only way to reach the HV board and well.....I guess it needs some work anyway.....
Why do I have a feeling that this game has been in a sea-shore arcade (maybe on a pier ?!):

Great that the lights are there !, just a little overhaul with some solder and its almost like new !
Better take out some sandpaper and start on the frame ;)
-
Great to have family in the states!!!
And great to follow this thread, when i have to restore mine, i simply follow this step by step ;) :D
-
Bit noisy now ! :p
But I can't wait ! :)
Some more work I did last week, the Power supply board of the monitor:
Gotta clean !!! Only one way: remove the HUGE filter caps and heat-sink:
Strange: rubbery insulators AND thermal grease ? Usually silicon insulators don't require grease.
Ready to be cleaned.....and it looks like it can use a bit of cleaning :)
Caps before:
and after:
Needless to say that the original big caps tested out fine. Sprague was a great brand it seems...the very small caps have been replaced before, maybe by Paul.
And here's something that worries me a bit. The PCB tracks show really dark spots. I have a feeling it might be due to overheating during all the years of use.
However, I don't exactly know what this is: is it the copper being corroded or is it the protective layer turning bad ?? Maybe it would be best to jumper those tracks, but there are quite a few of them. Of course when I measure them they still show almost no resistance (even with the ESR tester) but you can't measure wether the track can still handle a large current with a multi-meter.
Anyway, put back everything after cleaning and replacing the transistor insulators with mica one's.

Oh, and I tested all semi-conductors (as far as I could, two of them are the really big diodes that can't seem to be tested) and they all look good.
And of course all solderings renewed.
-
caps... yes, me.
thermal compound... yes, me, to get a good thermal seal.
The flaking of the solder mask is probably heat+age and likely nothing to worry about.
Paul.
-
Oh ah ! ;D
Thought it was the original stuff under the transistors but then again you did mention you replaced one or some...
No worries....this is just compulsory behavior of me ;)
How do you like the Zacc cockpit ? Can't wait until you "unwrap it" I mean the protective film of course :)
-
It's all wonderful but going to take a while to sort through. I've started on getting the Galaxy pin up because my son has been nagging me constantly about it. It's hard to know where to start...
Dok came down for the unload and we chatted about your LL project ;)
Paul.

I can imagine that getting all those machines at once make you wonder where to start ! Often I am working on two or three machines at a time plus other stuff....I keep saying to myself I should focus on one, but it often simply works out differently....
Dok came down for the unload and we chatted about your LL project ;)
Hey very cool !!! I am flattered ;D Thank him once more for his great work on the harness next time you see him :)
Hope he found this thread ;)

One more pic before bed:
Mission light bezel installed:
Man....if there ever was a cp that _deserves_ the name CONTROL PANEL....it is Lunar Lander's.....
The wood and bezel fit perfectly ! Now all I have to do is mount the light PCB (but I'm not entirely sure how high it should sit above the wood) and the missing buttons. These are on their way since last week so I expect them to arrive within a day or two :) :) :)
O !!!!! If anyone in the US could help me !! To complete the CP I need two 1/4-20 3/4" long carriage bolts and 4 nuts for these. I searched BR's site but can't find them there. Also, on e-bay I will need to order LOADS of them and shipping costs are insane. These can easily go in a padded/bubble envelope. They don't need to be black I can spray them.
-
I should be able to help you with those - 1/4 inch diameter and 3/4 inch long? 2 of those and 4 nuts?
Paul.
-
That CP really looks cool ! :spaceace:
-
I should be able to help you with those - 1/4 inch diameter and 3/4 inch long? 2 of those and 4 nuts?
Paul.
Great ! I am not 100% sure about the length yet though...hope KLOV forum can offer some help...
-
....the thing is that it looks like the manual mixes two lengths. I have to measure the one's I currently do have as I think they are the same length AFAIKS. Also will have to put the CP on the cabinet to se how everything should fit. This is one of the rare moments an Atari manual has let me down so far.....
I will measure and let you know this afternoon. It's probably going to be 1 1/4" or 1 3/4" length.
-
That CP really looks cool ! :spaceace:
+1 :-*
-
Yeah this really came out amazing! Fantastic work up until now. Keep going! :)
-
fabulous detailed pics, andré, i have to agree: some of those look like modern art!
-
Thanks Ully ! Not as good as your Canon, but not too shabby ;)
Paul, the carriage bolts should be 1 3/4" long.
If you need to buy a pack of ten or something like that I will take them all, always handy to hae these on stock.
I'll need nuts that will fit on these too....and if possible washers but I guess I can use some metric ones that come close enough too.
-
fabulous detailed pics, andré, i have to agree: some of those look like modern art!
+1, I'm reading this topic with great attention, so cool to see this cab coming back to life step by step in the best possible way.
:spaceace:

Thanks guys !
Little update:
http://youtu.be/ks5COSKAj4I
As you can see the 2nd mission light isn't working. Turns out the transistor is kaputt....
Also, for the good viewer, you can see there are differences between the cone buttons. The left- and right are Likon's, the others Cherry's and they produce a different light color and appearance.....
I also don't have the nuts for them (the Cherry's) so they extend too far out.
But that'll all be fixed. The lamps get damn hot.......I might change my mind to change these to LED's.....don't want the mission light bezel to "melt"....
Anyway, looking good !!! Everything functions fine I'd say ! :)
-
Cool that the lights work!
a transistor replacement is an easy fix for you ;)
Love it how you land the lunar lander without monitor ;D
Now i dont want to be negative, but is the cpo not accurate ?
The other side looks fine to me , only this button looks out of the center ???
looks like you need to take out the roundfile, the cone will cover it, and you can center it ;)
-
Well, the are two thing:
1) the holes allow a little (but enough) poisitioning and since I still need the nuts (or washers) to get the button to get lower I didnt fix it very accurately. In fact, I can't fix it good at all, the thread is too short without the nut/washer.
2) Check out pics of original LL CP's. This is a factory "error". Remember the CPO was reproduced from the original films from Atari.
-
nice work so far, you better hurry because the whole Eurocade team wants to play it at the end of the month.. ;D ;)
-
If its a factory error, then its original, and should stay there ;)
-
Indeed !
If someone treats me to the Bob Roberts G05 adapters I would be playing as soon as those arrive......
Hell...gonna order them.....what's 50 bucks more on a 1000+ euro game.....
Still want to fix the original monitor though.....and I might get lazy on that if it would be working with my "spare" G05-802.....
-
Dont go lazy on LL please, that game deserves the full Level42 treatment ;)
-
I won't :P
Was at work today so I brought the to Asteroids hacked LL pcb to read out the EPROMs.
The very first turned out to have a missing leg. It was broken off so close to the body that it is practically unrecoverable. Tried to read it but got all FF's.
However, the other 3 were fine and I compared all three images on http://romident.coinopflorida.com and it gives this info:
asteroidb Asteroids (bootleg on Lunar Lander hardware) 035143ll.b1
So...not sure if this is the set Paul uploaded earlier or if it came from somewhere else, but this maybe another indication that it's a bootleg after all.
Anyway, I have found and downloaded this ROM set (after all, I am legally entitled to it :) ) so I can burn the bad EPROM and maybe see if it will be a bit closer to running...
-
Ladies and Gentlemen........the Colombia has landed !

Received some parts from Bob Roberts and Home Depot thanks to PaulSwan today. One of the parts was the G05 adapters and of course I couldn't hold it much longer and quickly put in my spare -802 and....I played Lunar Lander the one and only proper way since.........I at least 30 years !!!
......and look how stunning that marquee looks ! HUGE THANKS to CKONG for donating this to the project !!!!!
P.s. please also notice nicely restored marquee holders.... ;)
-
I thought this cab had T-molding? :)
Looking good.
Paul.
-
I thought this cab had T-molding? :)
Yup it did. And it will have some fresh soon again :)
-
Wow  : congratulations André, that's a perfect Lunar Lander now (minus the T-molding of course!).
-
thanks...and of course it also still needs the black cardboard bezel and the plexi bezel...
maybe some new vinyl on the front and the coindoor badly needs to be restored. Also still want to fix the original monitor. At least now it's confirmed that it's not the PCB having the problem.
-

It's a small step for man but a giant leap for the arcade lifestyle! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Sweet ! :spaceace:

looks so cool, next to the star wars this is going to be your show piece... :spaceace: :spaceace:

so happy for you, andré, one of your ultimate grails within your grasp!!! congratulations!!!
-
....and a big thanks to you for the tip !!!!
-
....Regretfully the iPad camera doesn't catch the entire screen at once.....
Go figure! :)
But serious, that cab is going to be pretty terific. A holy grail in every meaning. Congrats.
-
WOW! Haven't looked in this thread for a while. Congrats also from the cavemans!! Very nice cab. I hope I can play it at Eurocade ... ;)
-
Wohhh, great to see it works!! Im sooo envious!!! :spaceace:

Really nice, can't wait to pull that thrust controller. :D

You're not allowed to pull it..... you need to push it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Ok, Ok, never saw and played this beauty in real life. 8)
-
Absolute Impressive ! :-D
-
Yeah this came out really really nice. :spaceace: What a beauty!!! Have fun playing it :)
-
She's not ready just yet ;)
Question related to this:
Would it be possible to print/have printed the ASTEROIDS bezel ai file from Zorg's vector lib and stick it from the back of a plexi ?
The biggest problem I see is cutting out the HUUUUGE center area but alternatively this could be printed on transparent sticky foil ?
This would be a good alternative to getting a used (scratched) one from the US.
Then I could have two plexi's cut at exactly the same size...
-
yes, its possible,
Just ask them to do it the way i have had the bezel printed for bela's galaxian or my zacc CP's
Its printed reverse on transparent adhesive vinyl, which is then after that covered by white vinyl
Then you got the "correct" print on the glue side.
then you ask them to slith / cut the window out with the CNC cutter.
or cut it out your self like bela did, only you cannot cut manual as precise as a CNC cutter..

I got one printed with adhesive on the printed side here a while back:
http://www.starcab.net/product_info.php?cPath=89_207&products_id=1029&language=en
(page is in Frenglish but you get the idea)
Came out fine. Had to cut out the middle part with an xacto knife though.

Did some work today...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOQxfHPrU9c&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The usual vacuuming and cleaning inside with some spray cleaner to try to get rid of thedust and dirt. Of course cleaned the harness and Power Brick too. Checked the Big Blue on it and it's in great condition still.
Painted the freshly received bolts for the marquee retainers and installed them, looks great.
Yes I also cleaned up the area behind the marquee lighting as always. Dirt ends up there after 33 years...
Cleaned the sides and I'm really happy with them. Yes there are the usual little scuffs and dents but there is nothing really seriously wrong. Touhced up the really bad parts.....pretty basically but it will look fine in the gameroom.
I wanted to install new T-molding but it.turned out that the stuff I had on stock has a MUCH wider center part compared to the original and it simply doesn't fit in the current slot. I don't want to router them ( too risky) so I need stuff that is more Atari like I guess.....this is pretty weird as I think I DID use this stuff for the Centipede.....maybe it's a US can thing ? All my other Ataris are Irish....

Oops. wrong setting just a sec....
should work now.."

Last night:
Son takes a look at the Lunar Lander's side art and says : " Dad, if they could build space stations like that, they wouldn't need a primitive moon lander like that !"
I just couldn't reply for 5 seconds because he was of course completely right and also because I realized that that thought never even crossed my mind...... ;D
a bit later he (he's been watching André Kuipers launch and landing during his mission to ISS and we were at Space Expo): "even now we can't yet build space stations like that" which struck me again because the artist in 1979 probably thought we would have something like that by 2012 for sure......
Gotta love kids :)
-
I have sometimes the same experience that you describe here.
Its nice to see that they "see" the things in a way we have not seen them
I like that !
Cool you got it running !, that means that whatever progress you will make on this, it will be playable at Eurocade ! :spaceace:
-

I definitly won't be cutting it out myself....I'm too clumsy to get it even close to straight. Wild guess of what this would cost ?
Another question for you Etienne: you gave me the prints of the Asteroods bezel but I remember you mention something about the size ?
-
Yes, i cutted one part out, which was not correct.
the thing that went wrong there is that i should first pasted the sheets together before cutting
Anyway, not a big problem, just paste the rest together before cutting, and then you can add the last piece in there with a little extra paper ;)
i have not made a overlap in the print (which i should and then there was no problem) so just paste the sheets together that the edges are touching eachother :
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2779.msg36372#msg36372 (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2779.msg36372#msg36372)
-
Ok, well actually I wanted to see if I could use these to "take them over" on a black piece of cardboard before any pasting but I guess you mean I have to "stitch" some pieces together. I'll take a look at the "puzzle" tonight and see how far I get.
Or should I first complete this one just to check the sizes ? I guess I it's printed 1:1 it should be OK ?
-
I'm currently hunting for some suitable glass that is non glare but still can be seen through If the subject is a couple of cm. from the glass. Most non glare glass is used for frames for pictures and need to make contact with the picture to show it, everything further gets blurry so can't use that.
I'm pretty surprised that this stuff is so hard to find.
I got a lead through a very helpful woman at St-Gobain, she refered me to another company (she mentioned she got the same question regularly, which should make the glass business think.....) and they will call me back.
If this works I'm going to order a sheet for my SW cockpit too....if its not too expensive of course.
-
Yep, its printed 1:1
so if it fits, i can trace the lines in Illustrator, and maybe lasercut a cardboard version for you ;)
-
Alrighty....let's go back to primarius school and do some cutting and pasting. Mmm maybe a nice job for my "little helper...."
-
Little helper is long asleep already so dad did it himself. It looks like it will fit but I will have to match it tomorrow.
Something else: does anybody have any Atari black T-molding on stock/spare ?
The stuff I intended to use (that I bought from Happ controls through Suzo) has a much wider "beard" that will never fit in the slot...
The top is wider too but that's not a big problem. The weird thing is that I have used this stuff for Centipede too and it worked fine. Maybe the Irish grooves were cut wider ?
I'll try to post a pic of the two compared together tomorrow.
I also decided to leave the coin door for now. When the T-molding is on it and both bezels ready and installed it's "Eurocade ready". Will still have to fix the backdoor too. But I want to get the Ms.Pac done too if possible and also Hard Drivin'. HD is HOPEFULLY just a pot meter problem on the steering wheel.
Now the weather seems to improve a bit I might have a chance to look at it.
The Ms.Pac needs the full works and no way I am going to rush on it because of Eurocade but it would be cool if it is done by then.
Coming 60 days will be very busy though with Eurocade organizing, fixing two WG6100 boards (I hope !), redoing the wall paper in our living room and having the wooden floor completely sanded and getting a new top layer. And also a vacation somewhere in this period....wew....
-
Cant beleive you pulled it off!!! - it will be ready for EuroCade!!!! How cool is that!!! :spaceace: :spaceace:

Not an option to redo the Tmolding slot with a slotcutter and a router ?
-
Something else: does anybody have any Atari black T-molding on stock/spare ?
as that a special type of t-molding?
-
Not an option to redo the Tmolding slot with a slotcutter and a router ?
Maybe. I don't have one though and besides not knowing how to operate one I would be worried if the machine would skip out of my hands and onto the side art or anything else...Would also have to redo the vacuuming etc.
I also have worries if the 1979 particle board will survive...
I actually used to own a slot cutter but I sold it because I had never used it and didn't see me use it in the future...
-
Something else: does anybody have any Atari black T-molding on stock/spare ?
as that a special type of t-molding?
Well...not sure. I have always felt that the Atari T molding is flatter than the usual stuff.
I will make a pic this afternoon and upload, there still was a piece of the original on the underside of the cab...
-

I got a lead through a very helpful woman at St-Gobain, she refered me to another company (she mentioned she got the same question regularly, which should make the glass business think.....) and they will call me back.
If this works I'm going to order a sheet for my SW cockpit too....if its not too expensive of course.
Got it !!! It wasn't cheap but WTF......nothing but the best ! I really hope it is worth the extra money. If it's as good as I hope I may buy this for SW and Asteroids too. Will report tomorrow...

Pics of the Atari T-molding compared to the Happ/Suzo stuff.....need I say more ?
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7247/7516888208_ddb8246018_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7516888208/)
Left the Happ/Suzo, right Atari original....
-
This is a drawing from www.t-molding.com for regular 3/4" black smooth T-molding:
As you can see the "widest" part of the "beard" is 3/32" wide. That is a bit less than 2.4 mm.
That comes very close to the Atari molding. I think the Happ/Suzo stuff is about half a cm. (5 mm.) at the beard. and you can also see the total beard is a LOT of material compared to the Atari stuff..
Something in my memory tells me that the Suzo people told me this stuff came from the UK and not from the US so the stuff that is ordered from Happ/Suzo in the US maybe something else....
Anyway....the stuff I have here now is completely useless...

Hey, sorry for digging out this comment from the last page ;)
Would it be possible to print/have printed the ASTEROIDS bezel ai file from Zorg's vector lib and stick it from the back of a plexi ?
The biggest problem I see is cutting out the HUUUUGE center area but alternatively this could be printed on transparent sticky foil ?
This would be a good alternative to getting a used (scratched) one from the US.
Then I could have two plexi's cut at exactly the same size..
I`ve just printed exactly this asteroids bezel. The printer company did the print and the cut on adhensive foil. Then I just cut plexi 6mm strong and fixed the foil on the plexi.
What me disturbs was :
- The adhensive side of the foil was on the back side and not on the print side. So the bezel artwork is no on the front on of the plexi. So the foil will have some scratches when assembling the control panel.
- Second the black level of print. I don't know if the printer black level is bad or the file black level. But it isn't black.
- Third : adhensive foil is difficult to fix without bubbles etc.
I`ve taken no pictures yet. But I installed the new bezel anyway since the new plexi has no scrachtes. But I will make a new one when the takeman control panel is arriving.
I`m going then to make the bezel in sandwich technique
- 3mm Plexi
- better quality print on paper of the bezel
- 3mm plexi
Second plan is to polish the old bezel.
So this was my experience with the bezel.
Glad you worked out the T-Molding thing.
-
Thanks Jörg ! Don't you think the 6 mm. will become too thick ?
I just compared the Atari T molding with some black leathered molding I have ready for my Ms. Pac and that comes very close to it regarding the beard size.....the stuff Suzo sold me is really weird stuff....don't buy it unless you are prepeared to re-router your side panels....
Ordereing Tmolding.....
Just checked the paper bezel and it looks fine to me, sizes are correct.
-
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8287/7519840612_6d36430a91_b.jpg)
Yes it's clumsy but it's just to check the sizes....
-
I like it :D ;)
-
I suddenly realized we have a A0 printer at work ! Bad thing is I don't come there very often....
Sent an e-mail to a colleague if he can print it 1:1 so we don't have to do the "stitching" (the printer didn't do the edges correctly on yours' Etienne, I had to "guestimate" the distances...no biggy for this first test...)
Never sure when I will be at the office (almost never). Maybe he can sent it...
Then I guess all I need is some black cardboard and do the creative work :)
-
Thanks Jörg ! Don't you think the 6 mm. will become too thick ?
Jochen ;)
No, 6mm is taken from the original bezel glass.
-
Da..... Keep mixing up your first names !!! :( Sorry !!!
Really, thought the originals were much thinner....O well as long as it'll fit :)

Yesssssssss, found a second TV with a 48cm. tube here in Holland. it has exactly the same tube (A50-120W) as the TV that Ully picked up for me so if this works I know the other will too :)
There were pictures of it playing so it is good and no burn in. Hope the corners are still sharp. This TV is from 1968 so only one year younger than I am !!!! Again, a bit sad to hack it up...but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
Guys do you remember the screwed up picture I had with the original G05-801 ? The BW FAQ says that this can have two causes:
1) bad setting of the linearity pots
2) bad yoke
Let's hope it is nr. 1) !! I got a pot kit for it from Bob Roberts so hopefully I will be able to fix it if it isn't just setting the pots correctly.
-
Just picked the TV up:
http://audio-tv-foto.marktplaats.nl/tv-s-overige-tv-s/576980745-philips-zwart-wit-tv-type-x20t731-05-beeldbuis-a50-120w.html
It works great still...and no cap-kit done ;)
only problem is mechanical with the channel selector but that's not really important for me...
-
I`ve modded with PRC some TV for the uni cab hellomaten. Had the problem, that the TVs must be switched on mechnically.
http://bencao74.blogspot.de/2011/06/hellomat-classic-arcade-cab.html
we solved this issue by adding a simple wire bridge for the switcher on the chassis.

Nice hack. However not all TVs need that. Some come up in stand-by, some simply power up and in some you can actually program what they do when "power returns". However, we are talking about a 1968 TV here.....If I needed it that way I could simply let it on with the mechanical switch.
However, as you probably know, a TV is a raster device so it's completely useless for a vector game. The ONLY usable part for a vector monitor is the tube and that was what it's all about... ;D ;D
-
P.S. The first one to say "but you need a vector tube" will have to buy the first round at Eurocade !
-
OK....a mini road-trip report for just another arcade part.....
For a long time (and I mean pretty long) I have been looking at marktplaats to find a 19" BW TV. I want them to BUTCHER THEM ....ahum sorry...I want them to give them a glorious new life in one of my beloved arcade cabinets.
At one point in time I desperately searched German E-bay and actually found one. With the help of SuperUlly (who hopefully is still alive and well.....) I could buy this little gem and it's waiting now for transport to the low-countries.
However, mean-while more BW monitors and cabs were added and all have at least some burn in some way. The best one I've got is the one in my Asterock which only has a small dot in the center. Some people say that a real vector monitor should have that dot but....well. Indeed I can really live with that one. However the other two clearly show burned in attract mode screens and well.....I just don't like that.
Of course buying a brand new fresh NOS NIB tube is still possible (and hopefully will still happen with the help of HI) but the costs are pretty high. I could buy them now for 149 USD but then comes the shipping and on top of that import duties taxes (also over the shipping costs !!).
So...of course I kept my eyes open at Marktplaats. However ALL the TV's I saw were either the really small portable one's OR they were WAY too large. There were also 50's TV (too old). End of last week I finally hit the jack-pot with that nice Philips TV mentioned above. Gave the seller a call, agreed on a nice price for both and picked it up:
My new car has built in navigation.....for all Western Europe.....

The place where I need to go is called "Boven-Leeuwen" (Upper-Lions haha, yes there is also a "lower-Lions")....this means I have to take only one high-way the A15. At some point I have to cross a bridge that used to be a toll bridge in the past. I rarely cross it...so here's a pic:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7570931210_e34a2fe08c_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570931210/)

As you can see we have a great summer this year ! ::) ::)
Getting close to the seller's place.
You know that the vast majority of Dutchies live below sea level and we made some dikes to protect us from the water...
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8431/7570932570_39d0ec2691_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570932570/)

In 1995 however, people still had to evacuate this area because the dikes were threatening to break under the pressure of extreme loads of melting water from the Alps.....(and some neglected maintenance)
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7570932244_07dcaff906_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570932244/)

(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7570931788_e8a453cd7e_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570931788/)
photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570931788/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
I arrive at a nice home....the seller is an older man of in his 70s. He's a hobbyist for sure. He shows me has garage where he has a workplace and lots of old AV equipment like the first Philips VCR's (no, not Video2000), radio's, TVs etc. Some nice radio's from 1928 !
We have some nice chat and at one point he asks if I will be using the TV to decorate my room or something......so I stutter a bit and say yeah....yeahhh.....it's really something I've been looking for for some time....(come-on I couldn't say what that I was going to BUTCHER IT !!!.....couldn't break that man's heart ;)
So, put it on the backseat of my car, tube face down of course, nice blanket under it, safety belt around it and off we go.
On the road back we have even more nice Dutch summer weather:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7111/7570930644_f93e23d2fd_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7570930644/)

This isn't just rain, it's what we call a "cloud-break". I have to reduce speed to about 80 to keep things safe.....luckily I'm almost home...
So I quickly unload it and of course first I have to test it (no signal needed):

Nice one, thanks !!! Remember it from some very old radio tubes....there was another logo on those tubes too....which was not so nice ;)......
Very old brand....owned by Philips for a very long time.....not much left of it now......nice history here:http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valvo
Anyway......as always the proof is in the pudding....
However, before any surgery is done, the doctors have to know if the condition of the patient is good enough for the operation so....

I love my Muter more and more. I hooked it up to the tube that belongs to the g05-801 that came with the LL and it showed some pretty poor performance. After a short "cleaning" with the Muter the gun showd excellent condition again.
However, this tube teste out just fine right away:

Removed the yoke from the 19VARP4 tube. One screw on the neck clamp and two hot glue pieces which came off very easy. Installed it on the "new" tube. Amazingly (or not) the glue points still fitted PERFECTLY to the new tube....of course not sticking though....
By far the scariest part of the whole operation is tightening the neck-clamp again ! We all know the neck of the tube is by far the weakest part and......how tight should it be ?? Wel I just guesstimated it....surely not too tight....but also not too loose....
It is also important to get the yoke exactly as straight as it was because else the picture will be not perfectly horizontal on the screen.
Mounted frame back on the tube and presto.....I do notice that the color of the screen is a bit darker on this tube...

Again, camera doesn't pic up the whole picture at once.....
Also: this was in full sunlight (yes, it was actually sunny for a while this afternoon).
Since the monitor was now out of the cab anyway I could set up the pots as best as possible. Turns out It will be best to replace the monitors brightness and contrast pots and all the position and size pots on the game PCB too....they were a little jittery.
But it works, and I'm really happy !!! It is REALLY a piece of cake. The hardest part is finding a TV with the correct tube size and the tightening of the neck clamp.
Does anybody want a used and slightly burnt 19" B/W tube ??

WHOOHOOOO operation Succesfull ! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Im not sure.....maybe its because I have been running the LL outside mostly but it seems to flicker more then Asteroids which I find a bit weird since Asteroids seems to have more vectors ? Or maybe the relatively large amount of text on top of the screen is spoiling it ? I know from SW that when the amount of text gets "too much" the screen starts to flicker. I asked Jed Marglin about that and he explained it is perfectly normal and that it was a choice they had to make. The texts are lots and lots of really small vectors which take relatively much time to draw.
However of course it doesn't flicker as badly as on that video ......:)

Great André, I´m very happy that the transplantation succeeded.
I noticed that some pictures are very pixulated. How come? Ipad cam?
Yeah, the number of stuff that requires AA sized batteries in my home has risen so much that they seem to constantly get stolen from my proper camera....buying a new set tomorrow...
By the way, this is also good news for you, at least it made me a bit more confident to swap the tube on your SW, however convergence is still something else on a color tube.....
-
Yup.......found the gun but where are the sticks when you need them......
Nice in a box next to the glue gun like i do ? ;D ;)
-
O come'on......way too easy and logical !
You know I am a chaotic person (sometimes...)
-
That is great work!
Let me get this strait - you turned a Raster into a Vector??!!
-
nooooooooohhhhhhh....
I simpy removed a picture tube from a TV and put that in a vector monitor.
One of the biggest misconceptions about vector monitors is that they have "special" tubes.
They don't.
Every Cathode Ray Tube is (was?) created equally.
Yes, some have higher resolutions than others.
Some have different angles but they are all the same in construction.
It's the electronics AROUND the tube that make a monitor a vector or a raster.
Sooooooo, you can transplant a tube from a TV (raster) into a vector monitor without any problem.
This is especially true for black and white tubes because they all have the same pin out ( as long as its tubes from TVs and not from oscilloscopes etc.)
However the tube in a WG6100 color monitor can also be exchanged for one from a TV as long as it has the same neck pin out and angle.
It's not as easy as with a black and white though because you may have to do the convergence.
Amplifone monitors used medium resolution tunes, but these too can sometimes be found in TVs and you can also exchange them with a med-res tube from a med-res monitor as used in games like Paperboy, HD cockpit,720 etc.
-
Cool your first tube swap ;D
-
Amazing. :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
I recently located a Chicago Coin cab completely trashed and was hesitating to pick it up because of my overcrowded gameroom, but now that I know that a tube swap could be done (maybe for my beloved Asteroids), I'm gonna go for it, for sure :)
It's a real TV put on a shelf in there.

Just powered the machine again and the picture looks great in the dark !!!
-
OK some better pics my friends......it looks SAAAAWEEEET :)

The picture is sharp, but I have to turn the pot completely to one side...I wonder if it would be even better if I could turn it a bit "further". Maybe some other voltages are not perfect on this monitor...Note that this picture shows the center letters too "fat". The one's on the top right better represent how they really look...
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7125/7604981190_3ea7a59640_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7604981190/)

I also must replace the pots on the game PCB, it shows some horizontal size jumping now and then, typical pot issue.

It is infinitely better than this pic, I just can't get the camera focussed properly.....and forgot to switch to manual...

And now a new restoration step for me: restoring a monitor frame ! So far, I have been usually satisfied with how my monitor frames looked. They needn't be perfect but this one just had to be done. There was way too much rust, and apart from looking like shit, it could maybe go further and ruin the frame.....can't let that happen....
So....after having done some spraying with Motip cans (and some even worse brands), I finally decided that I will NEVER use anything else anymore but Rust-oleum Hard Hat:
http://www.rust-oleum.nl/cms/publish/content/showpage.asp?pageid=468&templateid=83
I've used the black matt color before. To my joy, they recently added a satin black too (they only had matt or high-gloss). However for this job I bought their Hard Hat Anti-Rust Primer, which I figured was needed for this job:
And of course I had to keep a metallic look, so I bought the stainless steel color. Maybe not the best fitting for this frame, but i think it was a nice compromise in look and color so I can also use it on Atari Power Bricks..... because I am now tempted to redo these too.....aaaaarggghhhh :)
Before:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7272/7604978914_41f1421129_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7604978914/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7604978914/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
First result after ONE coat of spray (flash picture as it was already dark):
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/7604979406_da3c1bdb42_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7604979406/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7604979406/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
It looks really promising. These sprays cost a lot of money (over 17 Euro per can) but they are worth it. They spray VERY evenly, there is a LOT of paint in one can (not all are the same) dries very fast and covers excellent.
I also decided I'm going to change my way of spraying. I want the subject to be hanging on a hook. The reason is that I can "do" them in one go for all sides plus there is no paint sticking to the stuff I have under the object....
-
YESS !! then the powerbrick will look also new :spaceace:
and as a crown to this jewel, some thingies in an enveloppe that will be dropped in your mailbox soon ;)
That will complete this resto !
Great job Andre ! :spaceace:
-
Looks great André! Thanks for the education in tube swap!!! :spaceace:
-
BW tube swap= piece of cake, anyone can do it.
I forgot to mention that on that first pic I "scrubbed" away most of the rust already, using a Brillo pad.
Made it feel nice and smooth. Wasn't going to actually sand it all.....there are limits....
-
That's awesome - great result on the tube swap :)
Paul.
-
Congrats André, this is an awesome cab and a great classic game!! :)
I like how the different missions can be selected and the instructions are lit from underneath :)
-
Great! can't wait to this new tube on the eucade. :)
-
Thanks guys ! Luigi: hope you can play it soon......FYI it fits in my car and I can still have someone on the passenger's seat........but that is only Plan B of course, Plan A is ....... ;););)
-
Fuck, I hate paying taxes !! I mean, we are already taxed to death here....isn't it ever enough ?
Picked up a (rather large) box from the post office today....despite my requests once again the FULL value was put on the outside of the box hence I got to pay almost 50 Euros !!!
I guess I was "lucky" because I "Only" had to pay VAT, not import duties....HOORAY !!! :(
Next time I buy from this seller I will have it shipped to my uncle and aunt and ask them to forward it with all papers removed and as a gift....
I mean the shipping of this box was almost 70 bucks alone. Must be the size because it sure couldn't be the weight......I think it is in the insurance but who needs freaking insurance, I have NEVER had stuff missing or damaged between the US and here !
Anyway, in it there were these goodies:
1x Asteroids plexi bezel
1x Asteroids CPO
2x black smooth T-molding
2x Asteroids cardboard bezel
One of the two cardboard bezels is already painted in a nice black color....shame about the artwork, but it doesn't belong on a Lunar Lander :)
1 set T-molding is also for the LL. The rest is for the Asteroids of course....
Pics tomorrow...
-
Well almost tomorrow....

But what is this ?? All kinds of weird Asteroids are printed on my new Lunar Lander bezel !!!
Let's correct that ASAP.....using a new color of my favorite spray: BBQ black ! (bought to try-out on coin-doors.....)
The test piece on the left looks very promising !

Let's do some T-molding.....this time it fits ! :) (Notice the mission light pcb in the coin door area....oops....)
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8290/7853076272_a9784e3b4f_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7853076272/)

T-molding done. Also installed Velcro to mount the cardboard bezel, I will need to replace the monitor still and I want to always be able to remove it without having to remove staples etc.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8301/7853076800_a10d7150c4_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7853076800/)

Will install the bezel tomorrow. And the glass.
What you don't see is I installed some foam band on the bottom marquee retainer. The problem was that when the thruttle was fully "open" the marquee started to rattle like nuts :) I think the same thing caused the screws of the mission light PCB to become loose.
I also need to fix the CP properly, it is only "hanging" on by two bolts right now so not Eurocade ready...
Also need to install some foam-band for the glass. I bought very special reflection-free glass for it. It's a bit on the thin side so I think I will transport it to Eurocade separately...
If I find some time i think I will do a "quick touch-up" of the coin-door....
-
You did an amazing job considering the time you spend on this !
I like it ! :spaceace:
-
Looks promising, but it does not matter if it won't be ready till Eurocade, we can also play on it in this condition. ;D
-
i'm REALLY looking forward to playing this at eurocade, it's probably THE GAME i'm most excited about!!! :)
-
Looks promising, but it does not matter if it won't be ready till Eurocade, we can also play on in this condition. ;D
My good friend, if you take your lady to the ball, you don't want her to have worn out shoes and greasy hair right ? ;D ;D ;D
I have had a struggle with the cardboard bezel. I think someone should repro these on plastic or something....
The two parts have to be put together of course. I first didn't want to use staples (like factory I believe) because of the look. So I tried to glue it with some various stuff, nothing was strong enough....so I went staples anyway. I believe there really is no alternative... during the process I made some stains and other bad looking things on the bezel so I gave it one final spray of BBQ Black Rustoleum (also to cover the staples) and I think it turned out REALLY nice.
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7857266084_1df5f84c12_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7857266084/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/7857266084/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
I also put three staples through the Velcro on the cab edges because the back glue appeared not to really stick to the particle board. I put a full line of Velcro on the cap, and on the cardboad bezel only 3 small pieces of the "other side stuff" because I feared doing entire length would be close to impossible to remove again.
Also installed lots of foam tape where the CP hits the glass, where the glass is inserted on the top and near the bottom so the glass is as comfortable as possible.
Of course it started raining here again now so I had to pack up everything again....
-
this is looking nice, andré, although somewhat "brownish", but it might be just the photo. speaking of which, why do all your photos have that strange subtitle: Untitled by Level_42, on Flickr ?
at least give your pics a name, you can't call all of them "Untitled" :P

Let's play that game as a tribute to Neil Amstrong (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/25/us-usa-neilarmstrong-idUSBRE87O0B020120825). :-\

He did the final step :(
If you play Lunar Lander on EC2012 do it in memory of good old Neil! What game could fit better.
André, this looks really great! What shame I cannot be there to play it next saturday.
I hope you did not paint original cardboards but repros
-
Yup it was a repro from Arcadeshop.
Indeed...going to miss you here !! I mean, I have bought all Journey albums and put all songs in one loop and now you're not here to hear it......;)
Didn't you play bass ? I could ask Mark King if he could stand in for you...... ;D ;D
-
I mean, I have bought all Journey albums and put all songs in one loop and now you're not here to hear it......;)
Pics or it didn't happen!! :D
-
OK....it didn't happen :)
Maybe the LL can go "on tour" in the fall of 2012 ?? ;);)
-
Tonight I installed two extra connectors for the +5V and GND to bypass the bad edge connector strips. At least temporarily. This makes me feel a lot safer to let it run for the entire Eurocade....
I also finally installed the glass bezel. For the people who will be playing the LL at Eurocade:
YES there is a glass bezel there, and please don't think there is not and try to reach through it......
This is a very expensive piece of glass as it is about 95% less reflective compared to normal glass and man is it effective. I had the LL right next to my MAME cab today and that has a normal smoked glass bezel and the difference was incredible.
However, the glass is only 3 mm. thick so kinda fragile....
This also means the CP is now completely fixed as should. It's definitly not one of the easiest CP's to close (and open).
The only thing to do now Is the coindoor...
-
Great job Dré!
I have said it before, but im really looking forward to play this game!!!!

on location at Eurocade '12
Thanks André ! ;D

So far for the anti-glare bezel ! ;D ;D
It's weird...it does help, but it seems to depend. I don't think it's worth the pretty steep price difference though.
Anyway, that is a great picture that I hadn't made yet ! Thanks ! :)
-
Very nice restoration :)
Paul.
-
Thanks :-)
Last step has started.....
-
Last step has started.....
Oooh, what are your plans then, Re-chroming? I sprayed mine with Chrome paint for my FT, but I think I should get it done properly. It looks OK but you can tell its not the real deal.
-
No, I will just polish it as good as I can then that will be it.
It's part of the full coin-door restore process by the way.....
-
Looks as nice as the first time I saw that game! ;D Great Work!
-
Thanks :)
I brought the coin door (and that of the Ms.Pac and a spare one) to a professional blaster/coater to have them blasted completely yesterday and today I could pick them up. They were nice enough to put up a primer coating for me (else things start to rust quickly) so they seem ready to get their black coating......no time tomorrow though....got some other priorities tomorrow ;D ;D

Looks good !
by the way you should have waited 1 hour, 35 minutes, 4 seconds before posting your Last step.
than it would be exactely 1 year ago after the last comment in this thread ;D ;D

Yep try that with sandpaper etc. ;D

OK, for those who have restored owl-eye coin doors before: I've got the rings etc. back to very nice shiny condition, but how to get rid of all the rust on the coin-reject buttons (and rings) ??
Marco ?
-
very fine sandpaper, metal polish and some clear coat will do the trick i think 8)
-
Guess I need to get out my drill and sandpaper :)
-
Some pics:
Coin insert had a 10p label....
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5338/9714417239_fdf13b3cdf_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714417239/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714417239/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
But originally this clearly is a US machine:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7328/9714417789_2144aef86c_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714417789/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714417789/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
So I got rid of the label, the insert cleaned up nice enough to still use.
On the left: one "owl eye" disassebled and cleaned/derusted as good as possible. On the right, the other one still untouched.
Although the parts show their wear, they are nice enough to keep (plus, wherever am I going to find new one's.....)
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5532/9717650290_c9ca3b461c_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9717650290/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9717650290/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
Macro....you see the wear. In real life, it's hardly visible and the polished up ring shines like new. That ring....my precious ;)
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5486/9714419371_bfc2bc2e2f_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714419371/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9714419371/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
-
there is only one way to get those perfect and that is rechroming
i would not do it, as this little wear has its charmes
-
Yep, plus re-chroming costs insanely amounts of money for such small things. No, in real life you'll barely notice and it's ok for such an old lady to show her age a bit....she's still lovely looking anyway ;D ;D
-
The coin-reject buttons (called Scavanger buttons by Atari :) ) are the worst of the entire coin door. Badly rusted for sure. One I had to hammer out of it's "bushing" because it was rusted together.
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7404/9717651372_1e50941a26_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9717651372/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9717651372/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
I put both parts in the drill and used sanding paper (two stages) and Brillo to get them as nice as I could.
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7436/9716596903_122a7719ca_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9716596903/)
Untitled (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9716596903/) by Level_42 (http://www.flickr.com/people/level_42/), on Flickr
And done.
I think I seriously worked for 2 hours on them....
You can see they're pretty much pitted, nothing I can do about it (without seriously screwing them up IMHO). Remember you are looking at parts that are very small. The bushings are less than a centimeter in diameter. It looks quite good in real life and I'm happy.
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5456/9719829376_c8ff1e669a_b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/level_42/9719829376/)

I have been spraying the door and the metal bracket inside the door. Gotta wait till tomorrow until they are fully dry. I will get the door ready so it will look good on the Lunar Lander for Eurocade/RGE but not everything may be in place/restored already because I need my time for some other stuff now :)
-
Thats totally acceptable ! :spaceace:
it reminds me of the derusting i did when working on the brakes of my wife's car ;D
-
Yeah, but that "car" is hardly a classic ;);)
Coin door is half-finished, not happy with some spots of the paint, I also turned it over too soon obviously, but it is at least presentable for RGE..
it's not functioning but doesn't have to be anyway, it's on Freeplay.
The important thing should work: the light :)
and it closes nicely with a brand new lock. I LOVE "keyed-same" locks !!!!
-
Looks good enough IYAM! :spaceace:
-
Job well done :)
-

Ok I put over €1000 into it but it still looks like a good investment ;)
-
Funny...
Was just watching Rinus711's pictures of RGE on his Facebook page and realized I had never made some really good pictures of the finished Lunar Lander :)
So, thanks to Rinus for these:
-
Nice Andre nice :)
-
Absolutely awesome André, thats what I have in mind for one of the two Asteroids-Cabinets....especially if I find the second Vektor-Monitor.
Hope to find controls one day since afaik RAM-controls are out of the business....right?
-
Aaaargh - he just said the "R" Word!!!!! :o :o :o
... yeah, they are out of business...
-
Aaaargh - he just said the "R" Word!!!!! :o :o :o
Hahahahaha.....
Makes me sad that there project turned out the way it did.....they had some very awesome products.
Finding Lunar Lander controls will be a nightmare....although, there is a member here who told me I never going to get the Berzerk to run as the 7 boards are not to get what ever I try.
Meanwhile i found the board from Jrok and two complete boardsets with function-warranty went via eBay...so maybe one day a Lunar Lander-CP will appear on eBay.
