New arrival: Zaccaria Scramble ^^
« on: July 02, 2023, 12:15:59 AM »
My turn to enter the Zaccaria owners club!  :spaceace:

Oh wait, I already own one : a Tron by Zaccaria  8)

Whatever, I pick up this morning -as a new project- this Scramble by Zaccaria. I couldn't resist as the seller is living less than 15 minutes from my home.

So yeah, it's a project cab... and there is a lot of work to do on it  :-X

First the marquee is broken, and the original bezel is missing. Anyone have these parts for sale?

Someone has also the bad idea to paint the cabinet in black, covering the beautiful original artworks

Inside, everything looks original, but the game PCB is missing, and the neck tube is broken  :-[

The first thing I need to know is... how are the orignal side arts condition behind the black paint?
I never had to do this kind of job in the past, but I think it's just a matter of using Acetone and.... and spending a looooot of time for doing it!  :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

Few hours later...

Spending an entire afternoon doing this... and still not finished the first side!
As far as I can see, the artwork is damager under the paint on some spots, but It should look a way better than the black paint...

welcome to the club.

scramble is a robust start for a zaccaria lineup.
Searching Zaccaria Stuff: Fiiter Marquee, Zaxxon CPO, JumpBug CPO or CPO Repro
next project: assemble Zaccaria Cocktail.

Hey Nuno, nice pickup in an english weather day :D

About putting off that paint, the guys over the pond do it with paper towels ( like that kitchen rolls ), soak it in 100% alcohol and put some plastic cover over it to avoid vaporizing too quickly. Then they wait for 4-6 hours and scrub it off. Its much less pain to remove it that way.

Anyways, nice game, especially the ZZZ - they are some artfull cabs!

Too l8te, I worked on the second side this morning
I tried an other method than the first side ->

UNIVERSAL STRIPPER V33 SUPERDECAPANT

It's a little bit faster than the previous method...

...but eventually spent few hours to reach this point :

At this point this side in 90% done, while the other one still at 80%... so to continue... my hands hurt

Great to find that artwork under there! I tried to strip some paint off a Pacman cab once, but it just took so long I gave up  :-\

I'm almost at that point...so long and painful (breathing toxic products and having them going under our fingernails)  :-\
To be honest I'm not sure where it will go, but just can't stand that black paint  >:(
But for now I'm still motivate. Let's have a look at the front of the cab, first the control panel area

Better...

Damn, I didn't really spotted that crack above the coin door...  :ghost:

Next step, to remove the black paint from the font plate & to repair the crack...

Let's fix the crack above the coin door

I'm using wood glue

Let's see if I can bring back the original paint under the front place...

First black paint layer partially removed, but also some of original paint is damaged...

Well, trying to get back the original paint won't worth the effort... for a probably very poor result (and there's no artwork to save on that area).

So I'll re-paint that front paint. That solution will allow me to fix these damages

Direction the paint shop where I'll get the burgundy custom color, with the help of this control panel

...used to scan and replicate the right color for the cabinet...

Here is is :

Beware...fresh paint  8)

Lovely cabinet, lovely art. And a good restoration. Looks like one of Rumiano's old creations, but I'm sure there were plenty of places in Italy that built game cabinets.

Great job!

Thank you for replying to me about the paint color in my thread! Much appreiciated  :)

On the cabinet I bought, someone painted the front black, too, and I'm currently in the process of getting the paint off.
Isopropyl alcohol and wet wipes is pretty effective and it preserves the original paint layer...so far, at least.

Sadly, removing the black paint has revealed some nasty scratches but hopefully I can copy your process and fix them  :)

That's quite a restoration - kudos for taking that on :)

Lovely cabinet, lovely art.

Yes, totally! The simplest graphics are sometimes the most beautiful. These kind of artworks reminds me the one used on most of the space handheld electronic games released late 70s early 80s  :-*

Sadly, removing the black paint has revealed some nasty scratches but hopefully I can copy your process and fix them  :)

To be honest I do not aim for a perfect result. I'm already really happy to bring back most of the artwork, but the process of removing the black paint created also some damages. But the gain is more important than the lost, so I'm OK  8) Oh, I would like to see the pictures for your work, ans I would like to see if your method give better result than mine.

That's quite a restoration

Yes Paul... I missed working on new projects  ;)

I will reuse the original control panel screws. But first, I will remove the rust and repaint them. Note that only 6 screws are original. I found in my parts box two screws, albeit a bit larger, that should do the trick.

As usual, found an old coin in the cabinet... I'll also clean it  :)

It's a Belgian coin, and it makes senses. This cabinet was operated in Belgium according this plate

Speaking about origin of this cabinet, here's the serial number sticker... Maybe some of Zaccaria expert here can deduce interesting information ?

Ok, screws now painted :

On location  :)
