obviously i don't have enough restoration projects at the moment :-\ so i decided to bring another game from the FIVE IN A ROW BERLIN ROADTRIP (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=819.0) up into my apartment: DEFENDER
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2443/3880854149_5e7488ba76_b.jpg)
some scratches on the marquee - novus should do the trick. all i can say about those "sat 1 logo" stickers (a german tv channel) is going once, going twice, gone for good! ;D
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2525/3880853179_de520fd7eb_b.jpg)
the front art is in nice condition :-*
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3523/3880853559_0e706e1e4a_b.jpg)
only some minor touching up to do where a security bar in front of the coin door had been installed
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3421/3881650912_978669d8e2_b.jpg)
the whole coin door could use some cleaning - especially the coin insert. patrik is a huge fan of that "clever fox" in the middle and BEGGED me to keep and even restore it. my dear friend, of course it has to go, but i'll think of something special to do with the fox just for you!
the condition of the sideart isn't that bad either ...
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2449/3881652930_07ac908ee3.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3521/3880854453_7ae474c020.jpg)
... which means this time i won't be repainting the entire cabinet, just do some colour touch-ups. obviously someone else has tried this before
as always, the edges of the cabinet are worn, but the worst part is this . it doesn't look too bad on the picture, but in reality it's a huge chunk of wood which has broken off >:(
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2504/3881651858_af8f822f21_b.jpg)
finally, the control panel! apart from the fact that the coloured buttons for 1-/2-player and thrust/fire have to be exchanged, there's one more thing that i've already seen before on a friend's defender machine: the control panel overlay has been cropped on both sides for some centimeters and the black laminate which can be found to the left and right of the overlay has been expanded. WHY ???
here's a shot of how the panel is supposed to look like ...
this is something which doesn't stand out right away and if you don't look closely you won't even realize, but have a look at a closeup-photo. see what i'm talking about?
overall, i would say the cabinet is in average condition, there are no parts which don't need cosmetic surgery - as always ;)
to be continued ...
-
Hey... another great cab and another great resto topic from Superully the master of resto :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
really nice cabinet
It looks like someone painted yellow dots with a spraycan on the cabinet?

I can tell you exactly!!!: Cigarette Burns! This was an attempt to remove them and neatly paint the sides... I had a Stargate, and done the same thing. (I got my Stargate back in 1993, and traded it for another game) There were no repro kits yet and parts were harder to find.

Same on my Defender :-\ See the control panel
I can live (and play) with that 8)

Same on my Defender :-\ See the control panel
No Bruno, it's NOT the same on your panel. yours IS cropped, too, but not that much. you do have three boxes on the left, i only have two. however, yours is also missing something. i was just curious to know if other machines were "affected", too. i'll simply get a new overlay and everything's going to be fine :)

a con-fuse-ing question: ;)
my defender should work (haven't been able to test it though, because all the pcb boards are out) except for one blown fuse on the power panel assembly. have a look
magnification! i placed the fuse upwards so that i know / odn't forget it's blown and it has to be replaced
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2566/3883122627_5995e4dc52_b.jpg)
i've tried to find that fuse in the schematics now but i'm a real schematics noob, so i'd like to get your confirmation. i got those schematics from the web and had to piece two pages together - and of course parts of the important details are missing in the middle (scanner issues), but it should be number 7
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3459/3883122763_ac172924de_b.jpg)
according to the legend it should be a LINE FUSE 3AMP 115V
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2496/3883915072_bab5859c28_o.jpg)
the only thing that's written on my blown defender fuse is 250 VOLT on one end and on the other end BOSS MTH 4
i have NO IDEA which type of fuse to buy, slow-blow / fast-blow, how many amps, how many volts, ...
your input is requested, please :-*
-
(http://muerto.superfreehost.org/arc/fuse.png)
i think i vould go for a 250 3A...
how "dense" is the string inside the fuse? (the size of it?)
-
I would say that its 3A/115V for 110V configurations or 1,5A/250V. for 220V configurations....
Volt x Amp = Watt
so if 110V x 3A = 330 W we need to devide the 330W with 220V = 1,5A
slow-blow will be fine.
-
Mine were like that too. Wonder if they all came from the same Operator
(http://www.arcadeoll.com/wh/13.jpg)
-

nothing inside - gone for good when it blew
i have two suggestions now:
3 AMP and 1.5 AMP - hmmm ???
anyone else?
-
use 1,5A you will be on the "safe side" then 8)
If it doesn't blow it will be fine.
-
I'd put a switcher kit in it

that post is the conclution! - that´s what i will use..
thanks! - i also have a few fuses reading 4A-110V = 2A-220V!

do you want to sell one of your cabs? ::)
-
Superully: check the voltage of the power supply first!!
On the manual of my Xevious cab I find this: the main fuse can be 250v 7a or 250v 4a (depending from the revision); did You check the manual ;) of Your Defender ?
Or if You didn't have, check this link: http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/manualsdefender.html
-
I'd put a switcher kit in it
why?
-
Superully: check the voltage of the power supply first!!
the guy i got it from told me it had been running on 220/230 volts
-
I'd put a switcher kit in it
why?
Because if you continue to run it on 4116 ram and the power supply dies, it will take all that ram out with it on the main Defender pcb. You cna also keep your existing power supply and neatly connect a switcher to the power harness, which would not damage the wiring of the machine.
-
if i only knew how to do that ;)
-
Never mind... ;D

well when i was reading your pleiads (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=637.0) restauration again, i found (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=637.msg5440#msg5440) the answer you where looking for in your own post ;) (fourth action)
I guess that i made a good calculation (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=936.msg8255#msg8255) in my earlier post 8)
-
the restoration continues ...
it's been a while, but this doesn't mean i have been lazy ;)
remember how the coin door looked?
the coin slot inserts are either scratched / dirty or damaged beyond repair. see for yourself!
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2794/4170004922_663cc7ccdd.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2653/4169242545_e3bb659a85.jpg)
the plastic inserts get the usual scrubbing treatment and i was fortunate enough to fetch a replacement williams logo insert as well
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2688/4170007078_375649bcdf_b.jpg)
and of course the coin door itself receives the "special superully treatment" - including a keyring 8)
from inside the cab - the power block. nothing new here: dirty!
obviously the blue elko in the middle isn't working anymore, because some rewiring has been done: new wires leading away from underneath to a replacement elko
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2618/4170006172_12b8292a5b.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2799/4170006256_f558c132b7.jpg)
so i remove the old elko, put the replacement on top and clean up the entire power block :)
and then there's the control panel: remember, the overlay had been cropped on the left and on the right because of cigarette burns, that's why it needs to be replaced. i manage to remove the old overlay in almost one piece. anyone interested? ;)
however, parts of the wood underneath are also removed along with the overlay >:(
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2742/4169243143_8f13f88acd_b.jpg)
this is how the panel looks with the overlay removed
see where the chunks of wood are missing?
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2568/4169243521_1fe0eaac51.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2729/4169243343_84f890e2b9.jpg)
after a lot of wood filler and sanding, the panel is ready for the next step ...

Looking again at the powerblock, i see the outlet wich is in my opinion a "US style" connector...
wich in that turn points to 110V..
you say that the old owner was running it on 220V, is there something that makes a setting for 220 or 110 like the jumpercable on your pleiads ?
is there some mentioning somewhere that thisone can operate on 220V ?
if not , i would suggest you use the original fuse and a stepdown converter so the machine is feed with 110 just to be sure
the case of 220v into a 110v machine could explane the blown fuse, but what else did the 220v take out with it....
just trying to help ully
-
Defender always 'scared' me to play with. Too many buttons. It wasn't a easy game to master.
Nonetheless I great classic.
-
just trying to help ully
and your help is more than appreciated, etienne.
let me give you some more input: when i saw the game for the first time in berlin the seller turned it on, but the game wouldn't come up. all we got was a blue screen. so the monitor was working, the fuse didn't blow, but we couldn't play. i then asked him if he could fix it, so he took the boards / the powerblock home with him and tried to find the error - without success (he's very good at repairing boards btw). when i came back to pick up the game, he told me that while working on finding the error, the fuse blew. but this had nothing to do with 110 / 220 v - the game had been running on 220 v over the last couple of years without any problems.
at home i took out all the boards, brought them to an arcade friend and swapped boards one by one until we had eliminated the faulty one. this was replaced by a working board (luckily, he has around 12 defender boardsets at his place) and then all the boards were working perfectly in my friend's machine, that's why it normally should also work in my machine, because the faulty board has been replaced. it least that's what i''m hoping for ... ;) i'll find that out soon!
-
Oke, so the 220v and 110v doubt is not an issue here as it has been running on 220v
i was just worried because there is no mention of a 110-220 switch , and i think you know what happens when you apply 220v into an 110v device ..... KABOOOOOOOMM end of story ;D
the transformer itself could survive this , but the electronics behind the transformer will not like it ;D
hate to see that happen to your defender ;)
anyway, like mentiond before , use a 250v - 1,5 Amp fuse and you will be fine
if your interested, a nice explanation about transformers can be found here (http://electricitymagnetism.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_electronic_transformer) and here (http://www.cybercomm.nl/~cesmetel/kennisweb/trafo/transformator.html)
The second one is unfortunatly in dutch, but the images speak for themself.

the restoration continues ...
... with the backdoor. as you can see, it's in a rough, scratched condition
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2747/4248491392_0b24de48c5_b.jpg)
details
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4247719357_9ee5f820f3.jpg) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4030/4247718999_dd403065d8.jpg)
and - as always - the usual "wood wear"
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2620/4247719133_d678f60f88.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2547/4248492202_3cd7829899.jpg)
what worries me most is a huge crack (about 30 cm) in the upper half of the backdoor. obviously someone tried to kick his way into the cabinet .
first i have to remove the parts of the wood which stand out
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2781/4248492656_db20dab5f2_b.jpg)
then, a loooooot of wood filler to close the gap
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4248492742_1f914e047b_b.jpg)
sanded down
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2764/4247720181_aa76da0151_b.jpg)
and ready for the paint job
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/4248492470_259618279a_b.jpg)
looking much better
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4248493214_5e650a5d98_b.jpg)
the paint takes FOREVER to dry, but finally the backdoor is ready for the final touch: backdoor sheets
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2678/4247722581_447a4bd5e1_b.jpg)
the back of the cabinet doesn't look to good either
(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/4248494098_aca4510148_b.jpg)
that's why it also gets its own fresh coat of paint (and new leg levelers) :)
as i've said before, i won't be repainting the entire cabinet, just parts of it. for that i have to mask off certain areas, e.g. the front panel
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4247722257_cc704dc598_b.jpg)
the heavy damages to the sides have been fixed
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4037/4248493870_0a805f716a_b.jpg)
the artwork is being masked off
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4247721795_f2074d4d59_b.jpg)
no brush, roller or spray can this time - touch up time!
yeah, baby, yeah 8)
but then i make a mistake: i disregard arcade rule #104: NEVER LEAVE A FRESHLY-PAINTED ARCADE CABINET UNATTENDED
my cat gnocchi realizes my oversight ...

the restoration continues ...
... with the control panel. here's where i left off
nothing spectacular about going from brown to black
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1056/4596615348_173a9d919f_b.jpg)
a box with much-wanted parts has arrived from arcadeshop.com
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1318/4595999819_aefc4c1aa5_b.jpg)
in it, an extremely thick & shiny control panel overlay
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1140/4596615044_fb4faf7351_b.jpg)
PLUS a williams joystick rebuild kit
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3388/4596000217_1554460937_b.jpg)
i also found a much needed NOS defender joystick on ebay for cheap! :)
most of the williams defender joysticks assemblies need to be rebuilt, because in the heat of the battle, the player often pushes the joystick left and right instead of using the reverse button to turn his ship. i still don't understand why the designer implemented that button instead of using a four-way-joystick. this makes the game even harder than it already is. this is how those metal parts look after years of "abuse":

and here are the same old metal pieces side by side with their new counterparts:

the restoration continues ...
... with the cabinet's artwork!
after touching up the black color as good as possible, i turned to the other colors which could use some much-needed touchups as well
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3403/4601022935_6015c3ac6c_b.jpg)
the yellow color was pretty much spot on and only needed a little tweaking
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1095/4601636706_f642641878_b.jpg)
but the red almost killed me ! the color suggestion that the scan of the original red came up with was not even close, so i had to try my very best to mix the right shade of red manually
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1213/4601636412_20dda6577d_b.jpg)
however, no matter what i tried, the red color was either way off OR not glossy enough. here's just one example of countless trials and errors i did - and i mean COUNTLESS!!!
sometimes it was so frustrating that i threw the tools aside and let the work on the cabinet rest for a couple of weeks. i thought about importing the correct shade of red from the usa first, then i found a spray can in england which was suggested to be an almost perfect match, but although the spray can would have cost just around 14 pounds, the postage for that single one can would have been around 30 pounds. i came to my senses and agreed that around 50 euros for a spray can which might not even be the correct color is simply too much! more failed attempts followed ...
then, just a few day ago, i stopped by a new home depot i had never been to before. i wasn't looking for paint at all, but by sheer accident i stumbled upon their automotive corner along with a huuuge selection of automotive paint. they have around 30 different shades of red ! i came home with five small spraycans 8)
on the following picture, the shades of red look almost identical, but believe me: there are differences!
with some new-found enthusiasm, i started testing immediately
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1141/4601636880_11bb6e6f82_b.jpg)
and guess what: i had a perfect match! have a look at the color in the middle - can you even see it? it's a red for a renault called rouge flash.
however, while it looked PERFECTLY on that part of the cabinet, it was a little bit off on others, obviously the red must have "aged" differently due to the cabinet's sides being exposed irregularly to light. although i'm a perfectionist most of the time, there are moments in life where even i say "enough is enough" - and this was one of those moments! i had already spent too much time (and money) on that single color and came to the conclusion that i can totally live with the results! so i painted on ...

to finish the paint job off, i applied a coat of clear on top of everything! although you can see the slightly mismatching colors on close inspection, noone is going to notice those later on (or care about them)!
my final comment on the paint job: i'm thrilled :-* :-* :-*

Very often, the purchase of supplies (paintings, brushes, tools, various glues, cleaning stuff...) can cost a true fortune :-\
You should see the amount of 'furniture' stuff I have everywhere :?
Good job on the Defender color :-* :-* :-*

ok guys, i need some help in locating a specific lightbulb for my defender. before someone asks, i've measured the voltages going to the marquee lights (around 125 volts) and i've also exchanged the starter, but nothing happens, so i guess the lightbulb is blown! here's a picture of it:

the overall length is 35.5 centimeters, the diameter almost 4 centimeters - pretty thick compared to others

and here are the specs: F14T12-CW / 14 Watts / Cool White

i could locate that item in the usa, but a european-based location would be better (free shipping preferred ;)).

i've just realized that these are exactly the same light bulbs that were used in the berzerk cabs. andré found those f14t8 lamps as a replacement back then and while they aren't as thick as the t14 lamps, they do have the same connectors and fit nicely. luckily, i've also ordered two of those in the past and so i've been able to solve that problem on my own :)! the light bulb is working perfectly, so i can now close up the marquee area.

A restoration topic cannot be officially done without a youtube video showing you playing the game, with a lot of special effects, John Williams music, girls everywhere around you etc... ::) :P ;D
ps : Great job, as always :)
