First, one must leave...
Yeah... that's gonna be that lovely STUN RUNNER, which is a really cool looking one, but...mmhhh... I wasn't really 'into' that game TBH :-\
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/firefox/firefox_arcade_road_trip_2.jpg)
It's now time to face my biggest fear since I know I'll have to bring that game with me in UK : how to secure a such tail & narrow game like that STUN RUNNER on my small trailer...
I bought extra straps especially for this road trip!
But even with these additional straps, once the game lifted on my trailer, I was really stressed...
So I called a friend who owns a big trailer and asked him to lend me urgently. And when I mean 'urgently', I mean 'right now'! :ghost:
But no luck : no ...the trailer was not ready to be borrowed that same evening!
Damn! What to do? I assure you that I was not confident at all! So?!
So Arcade Life Style, guys...ARCADE LIFE STYLE!!! It means I HAVE to do it! ;D
Well, I already used trailers during my road trips of course, but not for a such tail & narrow game like that STUN RUNNER, especially with a 'gravity center' so high (at the monitor level), and more, never for a such long distance to drive!
I called my father to the rescue...
...full of resources and ideas ;D
...and here we are, just in time before the sunset! 8)
Ready to face the road! 8)
It's anyway to late to cancel... tomorrow will be the FIREFOX day! I'm ready!!!
Wednesday, the 10th of September 2014
Wake up at 4:30am (ZZzzzZZZZzz)

One last look in the rear view mirror, better familiarize myself with this view I'll have along all the trip!
Enough blabla! Engine on...Ignition!
I stop often to check if the strips are still in place...
It seems that the job has been well made after all! ;)

... or listening my favorite podcast such Arcade Outsiders or Ten Pence Arcade :-*
...or to explain to the workers here what the hell is the 'item' loaded in my trailer ;D
Ah, ok... le shuttle is ready for boarding

Each time I stop the car, I check the strips! Even here of course...
While my yellow co-pilot monitors the area...
...I do a little sleep... ZzzzZZZ
And here I am... welcome in UK...
...for the 19TH times exclusively in UK! Can you believe it?! ;D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/firefox/firefox_arcade_road_trip_34.jpg)

...for some reason... I'm hungry now! ::)
Let's stop here of course...
STUN RUNNER baptism...by Darth Nuno ;D
I love my car... plenty of space on the back!
-
OK, launch time is over, I have to play a global thermonuclear war, guys, so it's time to go... ;D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/firefox/firefox_arcade_road_trip_43.jpg)
What's this black thing in front of my car? Already the Firefox airplane?
Nah, it's 'just' a McLaren car! :P
More far...in the middle of nowhere...
Almost there...
...and here I am... the Muddymusic's place. He's the new lucky owner of the STUN RUNNER :)
Unloading the lady...
But as you can guess, I'm not only delivering a game, I'm also here for ... THIS! :-*
Holy Jesus! yes...THE ÜBER COOL ATARI FIREFOX COCKPIT!!! I could never hope having one... :P
This game was previously owned by the famous Fatboy Slim (English DJ, musician, rapper, and record producer), before landed to the hands of river9999uk.
Deal done, let's figure out how to load that starship on the trailer...
Try...Die... Retry... (to coda)
20 minutes l8ter... it's on the trailer! :
And after spending more than 30 minutes to fix the straps as good as my father and I did for the STUN RUNNER... we are done! But at the very last time, when everything is done, one last thing to do : closing the trunk of the car, which was open during the 'straps' session... and... nooooooo???!!!!
Naaa, everything is fine ;D And I'm really happy to be the new owner of this game :-* ;D
It was also a great pleasure to meet Shaun & Olly for the very first time. :)
Because I'm in the middle of a loooonnnnng journey, I've to leave very quickly...bye bye my friends. Olly, I hope you'll enjoy the STUN RUNNER, and Shaun, hope you won't regret selling me that game! 8)
Of course you are both more than welcome to visit my lair and play it again :) Oh, and hope you'll enjoy the Belgian beers...cheers! ;)
As you can see, I've the big smile on my face! ;D Of course you guess why : I see that cockpit on my trailer!
Like I did for the STUN RUNNER, I'm checking very often the straps... that cockpit is a true a monster!
Let's fast forward the time...until my arrival @ Folkestone, where the Eurotunnel station is located. Damn it! I missed the train for less than 10 minutes! :ghost:
This is not a big problem, I can get the next one with no additional cost, but... I have to wait almost one hour ...
...so during the wait...
10 listen TEN PENCE ARCADE / ARCADE OUTSIDERS
20 dozing
30 goto 10 ;D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/firefox/firefox_arcade_road_trip_59.jpg)
At last... boarding time!
And once again... during the channel crossing, plenty of time for some rest.... which is much appreciated! I'm on the road since a looooong time by now :ghost:
LOL, see that advertising poster ;D
It advertises a new TV series to come... about murders inside a tunnel!? Holy shit, we ARE in a tunnel! Creepy...and crazy to see this HERE! ;D
23:28 ... arriving in France... and still almost 400 km to drive  ...
2h54am... so tired... I'm starting to hallucinate ...I'm getting old for such hardcore road trips... I wanted to find a co-pilot to join me, but this road trip has been improvised in less then few days...
Ah... almost @ home... I recognize that creepy forest ... full of Ghosts'n'Guns'n'Roses'n'Ghouls'n'Goblins...
Entering my village... I've never been so happy to see its church...
...annnnnnnnnd the torture is over! HOME!
Trip : Belgium > France> UK > France > Belgium
Total length : 22h43min - 1504 km on road, 100km under water (Eurotunnel)
Ya know what guys? I'm a laser guy! ;D
Ok, next... unloading the game... 8)
-
what a rare cab!!! congratulations bruno! this one will be great in your arcade! i guess i do know where you will put it. :D
-
yeah Bruno, you told me about this crazy one man trip on eurocade :spaceace:
seeing this kind of trips, makes me confident to do so in the future
-
As all ways, very nice pictures and cool roadtrip, you do indeed need a co-pilot next time! :spaceace:
Now, lets see that beauty in the flesh!
And like Andre said, nice with the little easteregs in the pictures!!!! I count 19 of them :D
-
holy smokes - WHAT --- A --- ROADTRIP, bruno! this is how to do it. nice pics, great gimmicks, really well done!!! my favorite pic is the one where the trunk of the car won't close - great acting skill by the two british dudes ;D!!!
btw, never played the game: is / was it worth all those efforts?
-
I've always loved reading your road trip reports, and never thought you'd be coming to my house for one!
Was great timing for us both, when I said I'd buy your STUN Runner I didn't expect to have it personally delivered only days later :D and luckily Shaun lives only 30 minutes away from me.
It was a great pleasure to meet you Bruno, and a shame you couldn't stay longer - but with a journey so far on your own I understand why you wanted to head back quickly.
-
Great catch Bruno
i' remember playing firefox in arcade during the golden age.
The fun fact about that cockpit it's the arcade where i played converted it in empire city !!
it was fun to play with the yoke...
anyway great piece
-
Awesome road trip pics and as always, love the photoshopping....who would have guessed Atari made the Eurotunnel check-in cabinets ;D
The way the "exhaust pipes" of the STUN Runner are just above the lid of the trailer is just awesome, I bet lots of people must have been puzzled what they were seeing !!! :):)
Shame there wasn't a co-pilot, he could have taken a ride on the STUN runner ;);)
I've seen this Firefox over 5 years ago when I visited the Arcadebarn....damn time flies, it wasn't working yet then....too bad :)
I later played it in Funspot.
Congrats Bruno and ......you are crazy.....in the right way :):):)
-
Wow Bruno, what a roadtrip, but i think it is worth it so much, can't wait to see the pictures of the cockpit!
Good luck with it !
-
Sneak preview from 5 years ago ;)
-
My goodness...800km and back, thats the attitude we all can take as our idol!!!
-
is that the one that belonged to Fat Boy Slim?

so yes, i think it is 8) ::)
Nice catch bruno, i remember you told me about it at EC14, what a trip man !
Thanks for sharing !
-
Cool roadtrip Nuno! Well, I mean cool to read, not really cool for you!
Sorry I couldn't join you :/
I clearly remember playing the upright at the Reflex Luna Park in Middelkerke in the 80's.
I had no clue what I was doing though ::)
Curious to play it again now.
Nice and rare catch anyway!
-
Congratulations Bruno. You indeed told some of us during eurocade about your latest catch, and boy, you smiled from ear to ear. ;D I can now imagine that you were still very tired at the RGE, so even more great that you were there. :spaceace:
I never played the game, but I watched the movie of course back then. I can imagine that you are a proud man now, this one must be very rare.
-
Great road trip again Bruno your 19th wow
I think a book is in order laser guy :)
Shame you had to rush would have been great to go for a beer at four quarters barcade .
Next time buddy were coming to yours anyway
I am organising a Ukvac trip to the lair
I can't wait :spaceace:
-
Epic stuff Bruno, love the road trip reports one word: Hardcore :spaceace:
-
I'm happy to see you all still appreciate such crazy/hardcore road trip, thanks for your nice comments :)
As all ways, very nice pictures and cool roadtrip, you do indeed need a co-pilot next time! :spaceace:
Now, lets see that beauty in the flesh!
And like Andre said, nice with the little easteregs in the pictures!!!! I count 19 of them :D
hehe, well spotted guys! ;)
my favorite pic is the one where the trunk of the car won't close - great acting skill by the two british dudes ;D!!!
btw, never played the game: is / was it worth all those efforts?
THat's my favorite picture too! ;D
I've never played that game back in the 80s... for sure it doesn't look like the best game ever done, but it's a rail shooter somehow, so I'll like it! I'm a too big fan of that cockpit anyway.
Sneak preview from 5 years ago ;)
Interesting picture, André. Where did you find? I think I can be a picture of my cockpit, before it has its original marquee back?!
Was great timing for us both, when I said I'd buy your STUN Runner I didn't expect to have it personally delivered only days later :D and luckily Shaun lives only 30 minutes away from me.
Yeah, a perfect timing and coincidence... that makes the best stories! It was really nice to meet both of you! 8)
You indeed told some of us during eurocade about your latest catch, and boy, you smiled from ear to ear. ;D I can now imagine that you were still very tired at the RGE, so even more great that you were there.
Yeah, that roadtrip was the reason I had to cancel my Sunday Eurocade day. I really had to have a day off before starting a new week @ work... yeah, I'm getting old
Shame you had to rush would have been great to go for a beer at four quarters barcade .
Next time buddy were coming to yours anyway
I am organising a Ukvac trip to the lair
Hey Alex, you were somehow with me during a good part of this road trip... TEN PENCE Arcade playing all along ;)
-
So yeah, the cockpit spent the night outside, but it's summer time and the nights are not too cold in September (although Belgium is not a 'very hot' country). So here's how a Firefox cockpit looks like in the fresh of the morning :)
I've never seen this cockpit for real... only on Internet or magazines.... Even at Olly's place... that cockpit was already wrapped when I arrived!
So ... for the very first time... I'm in front of it!
This is not a dream anymore... it IS here... a real object that can be touched in the real world! ;D Can you believe it? :-*
:spaceace:
-
Nice catch :-*
Great roadtrip for a nice looking cab!!! It seems in very good condition :o Is the game in working condition (= no wip) ?
-
Yes, good condition.
But It currently run a dedicated mame setup, tuned exclusively for Firefox of course.
I'm fine with that solution, but as you will see, there will be a WIP (already started), so stay tuned ;)
-
Haha, Bruno that IS your Firefox on that picture and I made it when I visited the arcade barn 5 years ago :)
Man....are you going to put it next to your SW cockpit ? IMHO that would look SICK !!! :D
-
That looks amazing mate
You know I did see it at Shaun's aracde once but it was never working at the time, so you have another game I look forward to playing next year.
I think it would look perfect next to your Star Wars cockpit too.
-
For real, environmentals looks cool lined uped if you have 2 or more of them.
I unfortunately missed Monaco GP cockpit, if I had it I also would have to environmenals to line up.... :-\
-
Hey Bruno can we have a link to your work in progress?
-
Hey Bruno can we have a link to your work in progress?
it will be on this one ;)
-
I look forward to reading
;)
-
Ok, first problem to solve... the monitor is not working. :(
Fortunately I've found in my area a good 25" TV monitor for sale! Before installing it, let's check if it can handle the RGB signal coming from the VGA -> CGA (over scart) converter.... yes! :-*
The geometry/size of the picture won't be a problem, because the CGA converter I'm using here includes potentiometers to set all that stuff :)
Oh, and the monitor bezel did't fit the defect monitor. I suspect It was not the original firefox bezel and/or it has been rebuilt but not right... anyway
Let's see that bezel adjustment later... and let's remove the defective monitor now :
Yeah... it's like disassembling a plane! ;D
Oh, the defective monitor isn't the original one I would say... that also may explain why the monitor bezel doesn't fit?!
Yeah, all that shit just to have access to the monitor! Now replaced by my TV monitor
I'm very happy of this TV monitor... easy to disassemble, easy access to everything... great picture quality... here's the ref for archive purpose :
Let's plug the game. Nice picture, but have to fix the bezel in order to match the TV. There is a tube fluorescent to light the control panel. Once the bezel fixed, there won't be light seeing on the bottom of the screen...
Well, I'm already very happy! Because yeah, I can play the game... for the very first time... on this killing cockpit :-*
I really appreciate the game. It's a rail shooter like Starblade or Galaxian3... you don't control the moves of the plane, only the gun. For sure, it's not what we can name a 'classic', because I love the movie, I really love the ambiance, the sounds, the voices... and what's on screen of course! ;D The 'sprites' are of course a 'little bit basics' comparing to the real movie running on the background, but who cares... so 80's! I love the trip, the 'experience'! :) And this is typically the kind of game that can be appreciated ONLY inside a cockpit, with the right controls, for a total immersion! 8)
And what about this marquee! Damn, it looks soooo cool! :-*
OK, calm down Nuno... even if it's playable, it's not done!
TO DO LIST :
- fix the monitor bezel, possibly use an other one!
- fix the X potentiometer on the yoke... there are some 'garbage moves' in the middle range of it (new 5K potentiometers ordered)
- fix one button from the yoke which is not working (new switch ordered)
- use buttons to credit the game, escape from the game (this will allow to save high score) but also adding one to power off/on the computer inside... all these buttons in an accessible area of coruse(behind coins door)
- adjust the monitor size (need someone else for this operation or ... a mirror ;D )
- possibly upgrade the computer for a faster loading of the game
...and find a right location inside the Nuno's Lair! 8)
-
Great pics! - that cockpit or one similar would fit the new Star Wars game perfectly!
-
Looking great !
and Phillips TV, you can not go wrong with that IMHO !
-
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
That marquee rocks btw!!
-
That was very unlucky the monitor wasn't working when you turned it on, I played a couple of credits on that cab just a few days before you picked it up :(
It's nice to see it powered up in your lair though!
-
Did you read this Bruno ?
http://www.jmargolin.com/firefox/firefox.htm
Quite a story.......and Jed Margolin is a brilliant guy !!!
Hilarious part:
1. The Switcher
I was around during its development.
A typical switcher test consisted of:
1. Unnamed Engineer: "Everybody ready?"
2. Sound of bench power switch being turned on.
3. "BANG"
4. Unnamed Engineer: "o SHIT!"
Eventually the Switcher project was moved to another lab where it was mostly by itself (and we could close the door).
Afterwards, a Switcher test was evidenced just by:
1. "BANG"
2. Unnamed Engineer: "o SHIT!"
-
What a roadtrip! ;D
I've played that cab many times at the Arcade Barn (before Shaun had to close it down!)
It's a shame the monitor stopped working as Olly says above. That was very clean Hantarex Polo 25", I think the lopt is fairly new. In fact, I adjusted the vertical linearity for Shaun a few months ago to get it spot on! Probably something simple, probably something got dislodged on the journey back to your house. The original monitor was a slightly different size I believe, something like a 24" maybe. I think it was basically a TV without a tuner that was used originally.
DarthNuno, can I ask what the tube number is of that Philips TV you've used? Certain Philips tubes can be used with the Hantarex Polostar Monitor (usually tubes from 100hz TV's) and i'm gradually building up a list of TV tubes that can be used with arcade chassis!
-
Dude! That thing is AMAZING!! Are you running the original Phillips player? Love it!
I just grabbed this:
-
wow john. you are hunting down the rare stuff now...
-
Well that's a bit how we all "evolve" in this hobby I guess :)
Great score John ! Yeah....you are a Laserguy ! ;D
-
Never seen the upright one !
i' used to play to the cockpit in my arcade in the 80"
Great cacth ! it will be "in the basement"
;D ;D
-
I just grabbed this:
Nice cath John :)
Dude! That thing is AMAZING!! Are you running the original Phillips player? Love it!
Nope, this cockpit runs a dedicated mame setup, configured and exclusively fine tuned for that game only! Once started, you can't tell its not the original setup behind that stuff. Note that I own the board, supposed working and the LD, but I don't have the LD player itself.
It's a fantastic game to play, a classic 'rail shooter' like Star Wars or Starblade, and so 80s', thanks to the Firefox theme!
:spaceace:

Oh, interesting! MAME? Or Daphne?
I'm trying to fix my Laserdisc player now. There is something wrong with the power supply. The thing is totally dead and no DC voltages are coming out of it. I really hope it's an easy fix. If not, I will get the DEXTER PCB when it's available.
-
John,
Speak to Dave Spicer - he already has Firefox kits available to remove the LD player. It is an all in one board with a CF card with the image of the LD on it.

It's still a nice catch. The cabinet itself is a one of its kind masterpiece in carpenting art. As so many other cabinets from Atari around this time. There's just no other cabinet builder like it. Ofcourse it must have been due to evolution of CNC routers and computerised /CAD programming. Just look at the lines, the angles, it's a wonder the cabinet holds that way. I'm very curious how they assembled it, what glue the used, and how well it still holds together today.
Congrats on that catch, Bruno. It's a beautiful piece of history.

I was missing the first n in carpenting when I read the first time and I thought WTF ;)

Hahaha.. I see! Yes, well perhaps I should say woodworking. Though I think it's carpenting (carpenter) in english.
Actually have a look at the cabinets from Atari, from the early 80s to even the mid 90s. You will never see anything anywhere remotely close to the designs.
Examples from Firefox and StarWars sit-in cabinets to uprights and semi uprights such as STUN Runner, XY Bots, Vindicators, Crystal Castles, Too Bin, I-Robot .. this one seems to have been used generically through time with Return of the Jedi, Firefox (UR) and maybe more. What Atari did wasn't only building cabinets for the purpose of a particular game, but beautifully integrating the theme of that game more or less into the cabinet design. And I don't mean decals and marquees. Most obvious would be Vindicators where the cabinet infact does look like some sort of upright standing tank!
My fav cabinets aren't the extravagant ones, I'm more for the practical implementations such as Gauntlet, mainly designed to welcome four players *around* the cabinet!? Incidently also which you can convert to play basically any game on, and what instantly pops into my mind is Golden Tee Live.
Point is, where other manufacturers, even the skilled japanese, were building arcade game cabinets for practical use, Atari was using its imagination bringing that extra dimension into the concept.

You just described why I love Atari (cabs) so much :)

Me too man, me too.

Yeah... and not the cabaret one, I presume.
How about 720* (with the ghettoblaster at the top)
