Wow, those grills would work as my new SW cockpit speaker grills ! (Want to replace them because they're much too "heavy"...)

the restoration continues ...

FINALLY that water-damaged part has been "conquered". one can still see where the spot was, but as i've said before: each time i've applied wood filler / primer it broke up again in other areas off center, so i decided to go with a not-100%-solution and closed everything up as good as possible. after all, this is only one spot at the side of the cabinet and noone will recognize it.

so, without further ado - LET'S PAINT!!!

i have the cabinet's color matched to the color of the control panel frontart (which is NOT white by the way)

after two layers of primer and two layers of color on top, this is the result

step six: sideart

i have ordered some replacement sideart from phoenixarcade.com. here they are lying on the table

after a lot of re-positioning (the cabinet seems to be somewhat out of alignment), i'm applying the first sticker  :ghost:

looking good so far!

let's remove that premask to see what's underneath. oh no, beware the grasp of the wizard of wor

just P-E-R-F-E-C-T  :)

the other side doesn't go down as smoothly, because the second sideart wasn't perfect - there are some bad wrinkles which are visible clearly even before application. the sideart can be rolled down so that the wrinkles don't show, but after a while they "pop up" again. see for yourself

any ideas what to do? these are no air bubbles, they are wrinkles and might come from bad storage. i can roll those wrinkles down, but they won't stay down  :(  :'(

step seven: t-molding

another nice package from the states

it's great to use brute force from time to time  ;D

but sometimes you need to do the necessary cuts ...

let me put it like this: attaching t-molding is NOT the most favourite part of that hobby, however it has to be done and the results are rewarding and satisfying  :-*

to be continued ...

all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

can you somehow get some glue inside the wrinkle, a small syringe maby???
looking forward to the finished project.

Ully, the Wizard of Restor ! :D

I can see a couple of bubbles there you naughty ;)

Easy for me to say, I've never applied a side-art before ! I do remember that I managed to get a bubble under my Centi CPO, but I left it and it was gone within a day or two....!

Personally, I'd contact Phoenix about those wrinkles. You payed good money for it, you are entitled for a perfect product, not a "90% OK" product.

the restoration continues ...

let's finish the control panel - i got a new overlay from phoenixarcade.com!

yeah baby, looks like new  :)

before  :'(

after  ;D

step eight: coin door

the original coin door had this slight structure which i wanted to recreate at all costs. some of you have been following my coin door wrinkle effect thread and finally - after weeks and weeks of searching - i found a firm which was able to do a good replica of that effect. it's not exactly like the original, but "there's some wrinkling going on"  ;) and i'm more than happy with the quality.

backflash: about three weeks ago i brought them 2 coin doors (wizard and pac) plus 2 frames. they said it might take a while because they have to wait for a bigger assignment to come in from someone else, otherwise it wouldn't be profitable for them, because changing colours for such small projects costs too much. so i waited and waited and waited ...

fast forward: this morning, i got a call  8) so i set out on a nice short roadtrip

arriving at the location - powder coating is the magic word!

i'm still surprised about the costs: removing the old colour from the coin doors and the frames plus powder coating those for items cost me 20 euros. that's damn cheap considering the fact that if i had to do this manually, it would take forever to sand the items down, prime and spray them.

off-topic: i also brought my centipede control panel with me and the boss of the firm himself removed the old paint for free  :spaceace:

ladies and gentlemen, the powder-coated WoW coin door  :-*

details

today everything came together nicely: ding-dong, a package from the states has arrived! sender: rich from thisoldgame.com

inside, some metal reproductions of the midway coin door plates. the quality is perfect, the only complain i have would be that the one for my WoW coin door is larger than the original, therefore it won't fit exactly into the space where it belongs.

coin door before

coin door after - notice the key ring i've made! no coin door / cabinet is complete without one  :)

i'm almost there. only one thing missing. anyone want to take a guess?

to be continued ...

The powder coating looks nice! I'm going to give my Royal Video Contral Panel the same treatment
