Galaxian³ [Zolgear] Emulation part #2 : the video footage
« on: November 28, 2008, 08:42:28 AM »

Let's start to capture th video footage from 'Attack Of The Zolgear'  :)

I've already done a post regarding this on the DAPHNE-EMU board (many thanks to them for the advices on this  :-*:-*

In short, I need the best quality possible, I've choose these options in my capture device

reso : 720 x 576 x 30 frames per sec (29,270 to be precise) / NTSC
PCM,44100Hz, 16bits, Stereo

No compression for the "master" pure .AVI file  8)

Some test/sample :

My priority now is to capture asap all the footage on all the laser discs (who knows what'll happens with these media  ) with the best quality as possible. It will always possible to decrease the quality if needed  :)

What capture device did you use Bruno ? I've got a Canopus ADVC-50 which is a _very_ good quality hardware encoder that connects to a Mac or PC through DV-input. So NO compression, 1:1 video and sound (no lagging !).  It's an external unit and I rarely use it, you could use it for some time if you like. Just if you want top quality... :D

As the same way I did for the 'Project Dragoon' capture (right here), I now do the the job the G³ mission kit upgrade 'Attack of the Zolgear'.

For 'Zolgear', I got the both laser disc : one for the left LD player/video projector, one for the right LD player/video project

Like I said in the 'Dragoon' topic ... the footage of both laser disc is the same. The first half of a laser disc contains the footage for the left video projector, and the second half of the same laser disc contains the footage for the right projector.
So, no need to capture both laser disc because there are the same !

Two sides per laser disc : one side is the English version of the game, the other side is the Japanese version.

Let's start with the English one :

For the capture setup, I'm using exactly the same hardware/configuration than the ones for Dragoon.

During the capture...

Done  8) 'Attack Of The Zolgear' ...now safe  :D

Now, let's do the job for the Japanese side/version.

Note on this : if you check the Dragoon topic, I didn't see any difference between the Japanese and English version... but regarding 'Zolgear' here, footage is different : English or Japanese voice... logical  .
During the capture :

Done  :)

ps: As you can see, I've done that job long time ago in fact  ;) :P

Now... let's see with the specialists how to 'mixdown' these HUGE full size/uncompressed AVI files .

A *free* sample   ;D :

It's the two first minutes from the Zolgear laser disc (English version)

[click on the picture for the video]

Of course, I had to mixdown  (from 'no compression to DIVX) that segment in order to have a small file : 35 MB

~Enjoy~
