Oh noooooo, picking up yet another Atari 8 bit machine ! :)
« on: February 02, 2014, 01:07:14 PM »
This is getting out of hand ;);)

But such a sweet deal....and for a good cause !

the 800 XL will move to the US to a guy there who wants a PAL machine to play Dropzone properly (and of course run the awesome PAL-only demo's.) and he is shipping a NTSC 800 XL to me so I can return the NTSC 800 that I borrowed from Mr.Atari.

I've grown to like to play DK at NTSC speed a lot more and I figure this might be very well the case for plenty of other games too...

The extras are very nice: a 1050 floppy disc drive (got one, but an extra is always nice) a trackball which I will sell on as I recently picked one up and a Suzo joystick.

Nice one!
I am still trying not to get into the Atari home computers....It is mighty tempting though, but i'm already burying myself in Atari hardware as it is hehe

Resistance is futile. At one point in time you will realize what the best ever 8 bit machine was and will want one :)

+1

Just try games as Dropzone, Bruce Lee, Rescue on Fractalus, The Eidolon, Ballblazer or Encounter... You'll be convinced that you need one :)

Alley Cat, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Popeye, Drelbs, River Raid, Pitfall II, Poo-yan, Blue Max, Jumpman, Jumpman Jr., Mr. Robot and his Robot factory, Miner 2049er, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, BC's Quest for tires, Yoomp (brilliant unique game from 2007, supports stereo pokey http://youtu.be/TNxICcU3bPo ), Space Harrier.........i can go on forever, they are all brilliant !

I got a stack of floppies with the set and I noticed one game in particular: Nibbler. I don't remember seeing it BITD but I noticed now because of the recent attention for the arcade version. Sure enough it shows Rock-ola as the original maker and although I never played the original it is a very fun and challenging game :) they improved one part of the game: they left out the terrible music of the original :)

I also just had a quick go at Berzerk on the NTSC machine  and man, how close can a conversion be ? If you can't get a Berzerk cab, get this and you are 99% playing the real thing...incl.the voice.

are they? I get so many requests here in my shop for old computers... but most of the people prefer the Atari stuff nowadays.
Looking for Dragons Lair 1 or 2, Space Ace, Double Dragon, Robotron and yeah... a Shinobi would be cool, too!

Like this Béla ?

Even though I know I can find all these games etc. on-line, I will be making images of those floppies.

Funny detail: The A8 is a proper computer in that it can boot from a disc device (unlike many other computers like....uhhhhhh, the C64). Most of these "game discs" have a menu which loads automatically at boot. You just type a letter or number to start loading the game.
Some of the utilities to create these menu's allowed you to change header texts etc. and on one I found the name C.Jansen
This guy (later ?) became the founder and chairman of the Dutch Atari Users Group (SAG)  and officially was of course strongly against copying games...
