In search for wood filler
« on: April 20, 2013, 08:39:16 AM »
Hey guys!

I recently bought a machine that might need some woodwork.
Since some of you are quite experienced with that kind of restauration I wanted to ask you what kind of wood filler you use to restore your cabs.

Greetings from Trier!
Stefan
Looking for Dragons Lair 1 or 2, Space Ace, Double Dragon, Robotron and yeah... a Shinobi would be cool, too!

Hi Stefan,

I just started with the wood repair on my DK cabinet yesterday.
Used polyester body filler (2 components) for the first time and I love it!
I had to re-create a corner. Build a "mold" using scrap wood and filled the rest neatly with the bondo (that's what they call it on KLOV).
You can really "shape" your repairs with this stuff and it is no problem filling in like 2 cm deep at once, it doesn't shrink and dries within half an hour or so.
Just be sure you mix the two components with the right ratio.

I want to try how it works on filling small screw holes and edge damage today.

I'll try to post pics later today.

EDIT:
Oh, and it's universal. Works well on wood, metal and a few other materials :)

hey stefan, just wanted to answer your pm from yesterday, but you were quicker! over the years i've found that the best stuff for filling larger areas and getting a good "connection" between the wood and the filler is called PONAL DUO (as the name suggests, it's 2k stuff as well). mix it up, apply it to the cabinet, wait for about an hour and then simply press it into shape. downside: you have to wait for another 24 hours (well, i guess half a day is also fine, but i always give it that much time) before you can sand it. believe me: that stuff is PERFECT but unfortunately also pretty expensive. nevertheless, well worth its money.

for filling smaller holes and dings on the cab i use automotive stuff from nigrinwhich comes in two different types as well: for smaller and larger areas. the good thing about that stuff is that it dries within minutes and can be sanded down after about 30 minutes, BUT it doesn't adhere to the wood as well as the ponal duo does and it's not really "formable" because it dries so quickly.

hope that helps!
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

i have yet to find a shop that carries ponal duo, always bought it online. as for the nigrin stuff, you can get it in every good home depot - even obi has it :D

The stuff I used can be bought at Gamma, Praxis etc. Home depot-like DIY stores.
Bouwmarkt in Dutch.
It's excellent stuff.
