Illustrator tutorial video's
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:21:51 PM »
I have received a PM and the person asked me a tip on how to do something in Illustrator.

That gave me the idea to make a tutorial video, because that is 100 times easier than typing the whole procedure down.

Here is part 01 of the tutorial that i did.
Maybe it can help other people also, and feel free to post your tuts here also  ;)

how to set the correct sizes of a document

what i did forget in the video, is save as PDF, which gives the option to include "printer marks":

Part two.

A simple task, create a exact 35mm octagon.

I got a mail from someone who wanted to make a octagon, and at first i used the "star trick".

Later and now i am using the second way which is the "polygon way"

I know the polygon way was the ovious choice, but this "star trick" is just a way to prove that logical thinking can help you accomplish the most types of shapes you want to create.

More on logical thinking in the next episode  ;)

Is there somewhere a trick to do a halftone faster?
I can't find my way to make a perfect halftone.

there is, just tell me the diameter of one dot and the spacing between, then i can instruct you this with the use of copy paste, and then after that using a clipping mask to finish it off  ;)

I would like to make this.

I think the dots at the bottom is 0,708 pt widht and the height is the same.
But the dots are changing so i don't anderstand it anymore.
I have nothing just a few photos.
I am already busy few months with this white frame.
The previous drawing that I had created was not so sharp without illustrator.
Illustrator is new for me, but it starts to come.

I see, its a halftone in combination with a gradient.

that is indeed more dificult, but do-able.

let me experiment with some of my methods and later i will try to record it in a video

Since it is not a real difficult halftone, I would make a single row with a blend of shapes, and then paste it as tile in the shape.
Off course I used Freehand, less steps, but it would be similar in Illustrator

Make the pattern
- draw 2 circles small and big at the beginning and the end
- create blend and set the right number of steps
- draw transparant rectangle behind it
- group blend and rectangle
- copy to clipboard

Fill the shape
- make bounding shape
- clone it
- select back one
- apply gradient fill
- select front one
- paste tile as fill

1 minute work.

I don't put the gradient in the rectangle of step 1 as that gives a risk of vertical white lines appearing in the gradient.
