I wouldn't say it was popular here but it was a quite common game in my area (maybe it's just that the local operator had received a bunch of bootlegs and spread them around).

     hard to believe 80's followers as you didnt know  Black tiger !   it's a real gem of Capcom,  beautiful crisp graphics, bonus, ambiance, platforms.   if you had played it in old times, you'll love to play it again !    remembering in Bayonne near spain in a little bar,  times & times to wait to play it as it was an addictive game for anyone around

It's a classic, absolutely brilliant game.
