The Commodore 64 topic
« on: May 09, 2012, 04:57:45 PM »
I few months back (inspired by Erik), I decided to buy 1541 floppy emulator and go back to the 80's, when I played these games all day. :D
There were more options on the market, finally I found a very simple and cheap one, developed by a hungarian guy.

There is a sd card inside and you can simply copy d64 files to it with your pc and play the games in a few minutes.
There is a very nice and simple program that handles directories, you have to load this first from the card, then just choose the game and press enter to load it.

I'm planning to browse all the C64 games from A-Z from Gamebase 64 (http://www.gamebase64.com/search.php?h=0), download the ones I like and played back in the 80's and present here, I hope I can also refresh some great memories for the C64 fans in our community.
I tested it with one of the classics today called BC's Quest for Tires, I hope some of you will recognize it. :D

To be continued.......

Very nice! :)

So this device is connected to the C64 and holds up to x D64-files. You can then chose a D64-file and select a game/program inside? Great! Where and how much? :)

Yeah, you can connect it to the C64 with the original floppy cable and you need a 12V 0.5A adapter.
Here is the original listing:
http://szamitastechnika.vatera.hu/egyeb/commodore_sd_kartya_floppy_emulator_c64_1541_1575810341.html
The device was about 33 eur and he asked 6 eur for the adapter (sd card not included).
He also sent me some user programs like turbo loader, C128 driver, etc.
There are also 3 buttons on the card, step up, down and reset, but you don't need to use them if you load the program in the beginning.(on the second pic).
If there is any interest, I will ask the guy if he has more. ;)

Here you go: http://torlus.com/floppy/

For sale on Ebay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/lotharek1977/m.html

Works not only for Amiga, but also Atari 16-bit computers.

edit:
hmm, those sites seem a bit outdated, I found a more recently updated site here: http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/
Apparently, there's a LOT of computers/keyboards that are supported now: http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/support.htm

edit2:
and here's another one: http://retromaster.wordpress.com/ufe/ - however, this has only a one-off project status, there's no production (yet).

There is another better cartridge version available, but it is 129 eur.

You can read Erik's overview about it here:

This one is made by the seller himself, he told me, that he ordered all high quality components from Western-Europe (UK and Germany), I had to wait 2 weeks after buying it until he built it. :D

Great device Bela, and so much cheaper than the one that I have.  ;)  Oh well, mine looks nicer and doesn´t need external power.  ;D ;)

By the way, I also got the tape emulator add on, now I can also play tap fiels etc.

And Gyruss, I can vouch for the hxc sd floppy emulator, I have one for my Amiga 500 and it works great.

Yeah, yours is more comfortable without that adapter in cartridge mode. :D
I also have a program that converts T64 files to D64, so no more devices needed.

Aztec is the first C64 game I ever played, I downloaded that first. ;)
About Quest for Tires, there was a second part called BC II Grog's Revenge, it also rocks. :D
