Building a dedicated games room
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:11:56 AM »
Hi all,

Unsure if this is in the right forum (if not please move)

I am looking at building a dedicated games room at our new property (well starting in the next few months)

At this stage I am thinking of a 3 car garage (well ideas of sheds below)

The main thing I need to know is power, I see a lot of you guys mention phase three power, so more info on this (for a games room) would be good.
I'll have about 20 to 25 dedicated games, pool table, Pinballs, bar, projector for sports events and other items (fridge, air-con and so on)
Some of the games are hydraulic (Deluxe Out Run) Also, as I live in OZ and can't find some of the games I love I'll be building dedicated cabs but running MAME to emulate it (Juno First and others)

So fare here is what's going to be in there:

Arcade Cabs:

Dragon's Lair
Space Ace (my favourite)
Cliff Hanger (via Daphne)
Dragon's Lair II
Cobra Command (Via Daphne)
Interstellar Laser Fantasy
Gauntlet
Gauntlet II
Rolling Thunder
Discs of Tron: Environmental
Marble Madness
Peter Pack Rat
Juno First (mame)
Kung-Fu Master (no cab)
Bezerk (mame) (no cab)
Wardner (Pyros) (mame)
Super Sprint
Track & Field (mame)
Space Harrier
Shinobi (have cab, no board, might mame it)
Defender (no cab, have plans)
Galaga (no cab, have plans)
Out Run
Moon Patrol (no cab, have plans)
Mr. Do! (no cab)
Moonwalker (no cab)

Twister (pinball)
High Speed II (Pinball)
Future Spa (Pinball)
The Hulk (Pinball)

Pool Table
Air Hockey (perhaps for the kids ?)

Bar

Projector or large LCD/Plasma

Pepsi Vending machine

Lounges

That's it (and I don't have some of the items yet (mainly cabinets, pepsi machine and pool table)

Also, going on the size, I might want to add some games later on too.

Here are some designs:

I might need a custom size (will inspect the size of them soon)

Anyway let me know what you guys think (and I'll keep you updated)

And let me know about the power  :)

Hello Dexter!  Glad to hear you're starting on your gameroom!!

I see you will be using a Metal Building like myself...?    A few suggestions:

1. Make sure you get the thickest insulation available.  Use LIGHTER colors for the exterior, dark colors will hold heat.

2. Keep the ceiling as low as possible... Mine is 10' wall top  12' top center gable.   The higher you go, the more costly it will be to heat & cool.  I do think it would be cool to have a "loft area"  though!

3. Get a 4' entry door.  Don't get any rolling shutter doors.

4. My building is 30 X 40 which is 1200 Square feet, which requires me to have a 2 1/2 ton A/C & Heat.  You also have to take into account if all those games are on too,  will require a larger unit.  (known as a heat load)

5. Drywall won't be needed, unless you want it. You can hang lots 'o stuff from the beams.

6. Wiring in a metal building is easy!  Just get the flex metal wiring and just put boxes wherever you need them..  You most likely need at least a 100Amp  Service Panel.

7. Get Ceiling Fans.

8. Make sure there is a moisture barrier in your concrete slab.

9. 1 window only... (if any)  Low E

10. I personally recommend a DeHumidifier for your gameroom,  any reading over 50% is death to games & goodies.  Hint: if your window gets wet on the inside on cold days, you have excessive humidity.

If you have any more questions, Please let me know ...  Please see my post  My Dream Is coming true Part 1 for my building construction, That way you will have an idea of what to expect during construction!    :)

Thanks for the comments Sonic 1992, love your games room by the way  :)

Here are a few answers to your comments:

1. Yes, I am going to use thick insulation, and I was thinking to keep the colour "Zinc"

2. The ceiling at this stage will be the same as yours, but I do want a loft.

3. I am going to have a double door entry, I was going to keep a roller door "just in case" and building a door on the other side ????

4. The Air-Con is all sorted out at this stage for the size.

5. I will have internal walls (it is good having friends in the building industry)

6. I have been told it will be easy to do the wiring for the power in a metal building

7. Yes I will have fans too

8. I will make sure the building is fully sealed

9. My local council "might" require windows

10. A DeHumidifier was something I was thinking about too.

I need to measure up the games and see if there will be enough room for it all and I would like some extra space for games I might get down the track (there are about 5 more I would like)

And like you, I am factoring this room into the new home loan  ;D  I am SOOO looking forward to the day we start to build (house for the mrs, games room for me  )

Well I now have a quote for the shed, I have decided to go 20m x 20m and 3m height.

I was out in the garage looking to see what I had to put in and found a old Amiga 500 and Commodore 64  ;D and my old Silicon Graphics Octane so I might add in a glass cabinet to display them.

Here is something else I found:

I also got to see my old Interstellar Laser Fantasy cabinet right at the back so I have another laser game  :) (I keep my Space Ace inside next to my computer) all the others are in storage.

Looks like I am going to start building those missing cabinets I need  :)
