Atari Activision booklet
« on: February 10, 2012, 07:22:31 PM »
I got through my old stuff this week and found this booklet from 1982.
I love those drawings on the game's boxes, they are so 80's. :D
Can you recognize some "renamed" arcade games in there? ;)

Somehow all of these games are missing from my collection, if anybody have some of these for sale, please let me know.

OMG !!! I had exactly the same booklet BITD. Notice all the "coming spring 1983" anouncements.

Pitfall and River Raid were the best IMHO but I havent played all of them.

Pitfall II on the Atari 8 bit computers was probably the game I ever spend most time on.....I just HAD to know how it finished.....loooooong sessions!

Kaboom! was a copy of Atari's Avalanche.

Freeway was basically the first "half" of Frogger but ther is some discussion which one was first....

Most others are relatively unique I would say, at best inspired on others ?

Yup i was thinking what it was called...

What most people looking at the flyer probably dont realize is that the graphics shown in this leaflet for all these games was totally amazing. Up till then Atari had created some OK games, but they never pushed the 2600 to its edge to produce graphics like this. Yes they look incredibly simple now and yes they are drawings but they are quite accurate to the reality (except for the "movement sweeps"). I know I was drooling all over them and I could have summed up the names of at least half the designers of these games because I had looked at it so much (and seeing the names in the games credits). That was also very new, Activison was the first to give the designers credit.

Mmmm, but that last one is only the map screen of course.

The game graphics actually look pretty true to that advertisement:

Never played the 2600 version of Vanguard but this does look pretty good, esp. the UP going level starting from 4.30
It is pretty clear that they couldnt get a good diagonally scrolling level though....but can you really blame a system that was developped with games like pong and Combat (Tank) in mind ?

I always like the Atari rainbow color effect, it was so unique for the Atari systems (both 2600 and 8 bit)

Of course the Atari 8 bit version is much better than the 2600:

Of course, what is always lacking is that you cant fire in a different direction than you are moving like on the arcade cab...but its still a great conversion.

If we want a nice Atari 2600 setup with about 50 games, I can present it at Eurocade. ;)
