Galaxian Theater in Tokyo?
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:12:55 AM »
I'm going to Tokyo! A dream has finally come true. ;D
Do you know if there still exists an arcade where I can play Galaxian Theater (or something quite similar) in or near Tokyo? I read about the museum, but I understand it's not open to the general public, and just on special occasions. Is there any other option?

If not, does anyone have any other game center/arcade recommendations in Tokyo?  :)

Hi,
I'm a bit jealous now :) I will travel to Tokyo, too.. some day.
I sry, that I can't recommend some places, but here is a link to a nice Website that shows the most well known spots in Akihabara: http://xorsyst.com/japan/street-view-tour-of-akihabara/
Hope this helps!
Have fun and take a lot of pictures :D
`Contrariwise,' continued Tweedledee, `if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic.'

Go to Sega Joypolis, that's fun (with lot's of modern sega cab's) and in the same mall (i believe second floor) there is a little retro arcade with some cool stuff. There are lot's of other arcades but they are all filled with candy cab's or newer dedicated cabinets. For retro games (in a candy cab) you should visit Shibuya Kaikan Monaco in the centre of Shibuya.

You really should buy the book Arcade Mania: http://pingmag.jp/2008/11/21/arcade-mania-japanese-retro-gaming-galore/

Enjoy your trip!

And download the kabukicho audio tour from the same publisher "White rabbit press" to your ipod. Really cool tour. Guess the have an Akihabara one too nowadays.

Thank you for the nice tips! :) I am in Tokyo now, and leaving soon, so I don't have time to arrange much. I was at Joypolis today, and it was fantastic! I spent nearly 11 hours there. I have also visited some arcades in Akihabara. I've taken a LOT of pictures, and will write about it when I get home. :)

Very jealous!   :)  If you happen to see a Pole Position cockpit with a Japanese topper, would you be able to snap a pic?   Enjoy your trip!

Sorry, I only found a Pole Position II, and no topper. The arcades I have gone to are actually not entirely as I hoped. Not a big selection of neither classics nor very new games, but a lot of candy and generic cabs. And most of all crane games.
The best place for classic games was a little arcade in the same mall as Joypolis, and one Sega place in Akihabara. But most places there are most of the same, over and over again.
What surprised me the most was actually the price. 100 yen for one credit, which is a little less than 1 euro. I came from Hong Kong to Tokyo, and in HK the price is 1 HKD per credit. That means it's almost exactly 10 times more expensive in Tokyo than Hong Kong (which on the other hand is extremely cheap), and they mostly have the same games.

Interesting.. If I understand Google translate correctly, they have some sort of museum with free admission.

I'm Japanese.
Since I can't speak English, I am using the translation engine.
