Instead of cutting off a little end of the metal supports I decided to make some room in the wooden support instead, this was easier.

Fixed the supports with all six holes just to be 200% sure and I can barely believe how firm it is.....I had some worries the CRT and "frame" might jiggle a bit but I can totally try to shake it with both hands and it's not moving at all....

Also to my relief the CRT and neckboard fit without touching the PCB on the backdoor.

I must say I'm pretty proud that this idea worked out so well  ;D

Thanks buddy !

Of course I wanted to play a game....turned out one direction is not working....gotta find out why.

Also....The PSU is pumping out 5.20V at the connector but when I measure on the PCB already on about the first chips I only have 4.92V.......that's a pretty big loss and since I replaced the connector on the PSU already my bet is that the edge connector is the cause.....already have a replacement connectors so gonna fix that too.

Connector replaced....result is amazing....I now have 5.10V at the first chips on the board while I turned back the 5V pot a bit on the PSU and there's 5.18V on the outgoing connector there now.

So, I went from a 0.28V loss to 0.08V, doesn't sound like a lot, but it actually is a big difference. makes life a little bit easier for the PSU and the board is getting voltages which makes it a bit happier :)

There is also less heat being developed between the edge connector and PCB :)

I think I preached this before, but guys, replace those edge connectors !

Found the problem that one direction wasn't working, turns out I had mixed up the P2 connector and that direction connector on the joystick, duh :)

Sooooooo, I played my first games of Q*bert on the machine !

I must say I'm not too happy with the joystick. The new rubber feels way too stiff to me.....maybe people who like to work-out while they play games. May like it but I don't....now I do hope I didn't toss the original one as that was more flexible.....

Another thing: Q*bert's voice sounds like a vinyl record on the wrong (too slow) speed....already tried adjusting pot R6 but it doesn't seem to have any effect at all.....
all other sounds are fine....

Fixed the slow voice.....it was R6 after all.....it's a 10 turn pot and needed quite a couple of turns to get the voice sound like Q*bert :)

Nice work AndrĂ©, and I'm very pleased that you share all the technical details.  :)  Makes life much easier for techno dumbies like me. For instance the 'trick' to convert the trafo input to 220V is very neat.

Thanks, but all credit for the 230V solution goed to ajhippel !! :)

This night I spent about 3 hours for two things:
- get the sound just like I want it
- get the knocker sound just like I want it

There are 4 pots on the soundboard:

R6 = clock frequency of the voice. This controls the pitch (tone) of the speech
R13 = controls the input level from the DAC to the amp (game sounds only)
R15 = volume adjust of game sounds
R16 = volume adjust of voice

Now this took a bit of fiddling. Already had done the pitch (R6) but I thought the voice volume was too low compared to the game sounds. So I upped R16. That improved it. However there was some balancing needed with the input pot (R13) and R15 and of course the main volume pot on the test panel. If you don't set this correctly, the game sounds may end up sounding distorted.

Next was the knocker: I wasn't happy with the sound. It was to much a sharp, high pitched "tack" sound. Of course I remembered that the developpers had intended some foam to be installed at the knocker so that the should would be less sharp and more of a "thud" instead.

So I got out some soft (furniture) foam and some plastic kind of stuff and experimented.

One thing that annoys me is the sound that happens when the plunger is release back to it's rest position. Of course there is a small rubber "catch" there but you still hear it. Wanted to silence that as much as possible.
I settled for the plastic kind of stuff for that part.

The actual spot where the knocker hits the metal I chose for the soft furniture foam though. After all, curly and Q*bert are soft living beings that drop down in the cab, not some metal :)

Sounds WAY better and I think this is what the designers had imagined it to be.

Glued both to the knocker. It looks weird but I think it'll work great.

One of the disadvantages of using this foam is that the starting postion of the plunger is quite a bit higher than normally so the power of the hit is less but that's not a real problem IMHO.

And it was generously donated to the project !  ( ok , I traded my Ms.Pac plexi in the end for it :):) )

Oh and Robin.....please read my threads a bit more, I had almost ordered these for crazy shipping money from the States ;););)

Heh....it doesn't fit....there is a raised edge that is not there on the original shroud, so I am going to have to cut some of the plastic on top and bottom....but didn't want to rush that, don't what a crack to ruin it...
