CRT Monitors/TVs
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:49:32 PM »
Hey everyone got a question.  I'm almost at completion of my Mame cabinet, now I need to consider the following.  Was going to go LCD because of the space constrictions, but I think I can manage it with a TUBE now after all,  I don't want to spend $$$$$$ for a genuine arcade monitor.  I notice that some of you guys use SCART monitors, thats awesome, but only one Problem-SCART wasn't sold in the US..that I know of.  At least when i do a search on Craig's list it doesn't show up.  OK humor me here, I am new to this.. is there something comparable I can use????  I have a 20 inch TV with a composite input, when I hook my PC to it and run MAME..it looks like...well crap.  I mean the LCD looks better than that.
Ideas, Advice, Tips...always welcome. ???

An NTSC TV has 480 interlaced lines. If you try to feed it with say 288 progressive lines, it will look shit. If you feed it with 320line it will look shit. Rougly just 240 line games will be reasonable, and even then there is the risk of framing, since not all lines are visible by default.

You could try to find a multi-system TV that was meant for PAL & NTSC (maybe even SECAM). Usually these have RGB inputs.
That's what you'll need.

B.t.w. I've now reached the point where I feel that all CRT stuff should be reserved for original cabs ;) ;) ;)

Yea just looked up the secam and anything of any size is expensive.

Let me ask this.  I have been seeing these boards that output component (RGB)  would that work?  Say I found a 21 inch Trinitron with RGB IN?  I know that VGA out puts RGBS, don't think you can use that for a standard TV.  Just guessing here.
Thanks

In your situation i would suggest to take a PC monitor apart, and build that into the cab.

That gives you at least a CRT screen without too much hassle.

Try a LaCie Electron Blue or an IIyama Visionmaster 450-470
They are going up to 22 inch.

Do remember that computer monitor inch sizes are "different" than TV/low-res monitor sizes. That is, on one they measure the tube edge to edge, the other only the visible area....
