Technical Area / Original monitor
« on: December 28, 2016, 11:46:12 AM »
HI guys,

My original monitor in my Cinematronics Dragon's Lair is dying. I can see the picture but the screen is very blue. Almost like the red and green channels aren't working any more. I've tried adjusting the RGB pots on the chassis but it doesn't help.
If I replace it with another monitor what size is it? (26"?) ~I am not going to replace it with an LCD that would be sacrilege, so any help would be appreciated!

thanks in advance
Andy

Good man. Keep it. You'll kick yourself when someone gets it working again and posts the pics up here or elsewhere - you'll think why did I ever sell it?!!  :'(

Look forward to seeing it working again.

Look what I got this week :)

Not bad considering it's an original and not a repro. Good condition too seeing as it's 30 years old.

Thanks, and yes it might help others in the future perhaps, plus was an easy fix  ;D

IREM Rolling Thunder? Maybe he's got confused and means R-type perhaps? Who knows. Buyer beware though, there are two versions of Rolling Thunder. The old version has different in-game music and you can't select the level-skip at the beginning. New version is much better. Make sure they specify which one's for sale

Quick update if anyone's interested...

After careful examination, the missing sounds were actually there, just REALLY quiet and the in-game music was drowning them out totally. So advice from a good friend of mine was to swap the capacitors on the sub-board. So my trusty soldering iron came out, old capacitors removed and new capacitors soldered on, six of them in total. It's back to normal again, all sounds, just great.  ;D

Just Robocop to fix now  :P

Technical Area / Rolling Thunder pcb sound issue

I hope somebody can help?
I have two RT boards, and old version, and the new version. Now i had them in storage and due to mouse damage the new version has a couple of corroded chips and won't play, just a fuzzy gfx screen. Plus it had the correct in game soundtrack that the old version didn't.

So I've swapped the RT1 - 16 roms over and the smaller 1-5 from the new to old board in the hope it'll work, and it does! BUT I have no 'kssh' gun firing or enemy 'argh' sounds when they're shot. All the other sounds seem to be there.

Does anyone know where the sounds are located on the pcb? I've swapped both sub boards to and fro and still get the same.
Bit stuck. Anyone have any ideas ??

without wanting to step on anyone's toes, building a cab yourself is just not original. i know, i know, slapping on repro artwork isn't original either, but imho at least the base has to be made of the original (smelly) wood!

...IF you can find an original cab in the first place. They're getting very rare these days...

The Atari and Cinematronics cabs are identical, it's just DL2 that's a tad wider. (as mentioned above)

Besides, If you're that desperate, BUILD one dude! There's plenty of ways on t'internet to get a really nice looking DL cab, and you can go the 'Daphne' route perhaps? Just a thought.  ;D I shall slink of back off under my stone  :P

And very expensive. V cool though.

is there a dragon's lair information page which lists / shows the various models (and their differences) side by side? e.g. what's the difference between the uk and the us version? do they also play differently? which cab is the most interesting one to get from a collector's viewpoint?

...also the move beeps are different. Plus the UK version has blue screen instead of an LED scoreboard as mentioned above.
The Atari euro version plays random rooms, until you've played them all then it'll give you the dragon's lair, whilst the US cinematronics pcb, depending on what romset you get play in a more sequenced way i.e. castle rooms first, then moving down to the lower levels, the rapids and mudmen before finally the dragon's lair. The US version is the more reliable, as spares for the Atari version are virtually non existant or very hard to obtain, unless you 'daphne' it of course :)

The seller mentions 'UK version', but it looks like the US Cinematronics one...

It is the Cinematronics version. Says its all original.. but it has repro side art. Apparently it need a new pcb... although a few have been tried in it - but the ldp works I'm told.

If so, call me mad too! The blue screen version is also my favorite one... simply because it was the version I played back in the days 8)
Awesome! ...and up until the other month, I hadn't seen a Dragon's Lair in the flesh, for 25 years. Now I'm lucky enough to own one. It's damn hard though, must be set on uber difficult. I'll have to check to dip switches. I get to the final 'sword' move, and mess it up each time. Guess my timings off ;)
