Friday 18th of May 2012... ready for an other road trip...

Enough Dr Pepper Zero?  ;D

Ok, 5:52am, 379mk to go... I call this a 'small' trip! Here we go!

At the border of my village, I recognize that cow... wondering if she can recognize me?  ::)

*AUTOMATIC ADVERTISE FROM MY OFFICIAL SPONSOR*

Sorry for the interruption!

The advert says : "What's the worse that could happen!". Well, now the worse for me is my navigation car system who leads me in Liege downtown!  :?

Next exit, 18 arcades? Does this mean 18 Wheelers by any chance?  ::)

As I said... Liege downtown! What the hell I'm doing here! :ghost:

At last I can see the 'mother base' of one of the most famous Belgian Beer ... 'les hommes savent pourquoi'  :)

This time, it will happen in the Netherlands...

Ouch, this 'place' is depressing...

...so depressing!  :-X

Road trip is always a good opportunity to eat 'something different'  :P So you may think I'm gonna stop here & now...

...but not this time! Because I need something else I can find here in the Netherlands, 'la fricadelle'!  ;D I use to eat that in Belgium of course, but not inside that 'bread' & that delicious sauce  :P

Let's continue our way into that country... Hey, I didn't know their school bus was similar than the US one? Cool! Forest?

Arriving in the destination town... bikes everywhere!

Everywhere!

Ok, I'm on destination. The seller is waiting for me. Let's open the door please :

The seller manager has a business, specialized in the Japanese cabinets importation. Interesting stuff in his desk/office :

Special item for Barry  8)

Here's the reason why I'm here  8)

a SEGA ASTRO CITY  :-*

Here's the technical data :

Sega Astro City

    - Type: Sitdown
    - Japanese Name: ASUTOROSHITI
    - Release: February-1993
    - Dimensions: 750 x 905 x 1445 mm
    - Wiring: JAMMA
    - Monitor: Nanao MS8, 29 in, 15/24 kHz
    - Rotatable: Yes (no rotate mechanism)
    - Weight: 93 kg
    - Power: 140 W

I'm not a crazy fan of 'generic' Japanese cabinet, but I'm admit I really love this model! I love its 'pure' shapes, with gorgeous curves, the possibility to play sitting on a small stool, the giant screen in front of you, who can be rotated, jamma set up, easy access to everything (jamma boards, monitor pot' buttons)...oh, and it's not a generic cabinet, it's a SEGA one! Hell Yeah  :-*
It was love at first sight! I remember I discovered that model during my first meeting with mame-univers (now gamoover) members 7 or 8 years ago, especially Kaneda ...it's your fault man!  ;)
I agree It's not a cabinet that match my dedicated collection, but I always wanted one to play 'more modern' games, like vertical shooters. And I didn't have a generic jamma  cabinet anymore, so it was the one to get now.  8) I was only waiting for one to sell with a nice price and not too far... the wait is over!  ;D

I asked to the seller I wanted the vertical orientation for the monitor! He was setting it that when I came... this is why the cabinet is open on the picture.

The seller has a lot of Japanese cabinets, for example the previous model : the Aero City (released in 1988)

OK, my cabinet is now ready.... loading time :

The sexy curve of her back perfectly fits the trunk  ;D

Let's bring back that Asian girl in Belgium...

...leaving the town ...

It's time to eat... sorry but 'road trip mandatory'  ::) ...Burger King this time!  :)

Did you expect a new package delivery today?  :)

Oh no...back on the depressive & ugly area?  :-\

...it doesn't affect me at all, I'm even quite happy 'coz I'm bringing new stuff at home, HELL YEEAHHH!

It's time to buy a new TOM TOM I guess... back in Liege down town  :ghost:

My navigation car system doesn't like to operate in the Netherlands. Few time I missed exists on highway because of bad/wrong indication! Ok it's maybe because the map has never been updated since many years...but I never had such problems anywhere else!  :-X

An other 'road trip mandatory' picture I guess...

Two km to go... fortunately because I'm almost out of fuel...

And here we are, with a new Asian girl at home  :) Here's for my ALS statistics  :P

2 country - 806 km / 9h58min on the road.

Next pictures : unloading the 'washing machine'.  ;)

Well Bruno, congratulations on this fine catch, With this purchase you have enriched your arcade lifestyle and gaming experience considerably.  :spaceace:

I knew this report had to be coming for a few months now, after seeing this picture back in May:

Thumbs Up!

I like these quotes of you:

"I love its 'pure' shapes, with gorgeous curves"

"...oh, and it's not a generic cabinet, it's a SEGA one! Hell Yeah  :-* "

".... The sexy curve of her back"

The exact reasons why I am so fond of my NAC´s, and because of the gaming experience of course (Japanese SHMUP´s forever!). And it´s the only Asian babe that is allowed in my house by my wife.  :D

Have fun playing this beauty!

be prepared to do some  xbox+coinops  or xbox360 hack  ;)

Nice catch Bruno! And welcome to the club!
Maybe sell the Galaxian3 now that it's still dismantled and save yourself the hassle of putting it back together,
and fill Lair 3 with Japanese sitdown cabinets! :)

Wow, that looks like a great place, unfortuntalely a bit far from where I live. Belgium is a lot closer.

By the way, Galaxian3 is a heavily overrated game IMHO, gameplay wise.  I must admit, never played it, just saw the youtube movies that we all know and is the only ´experience´ with this game for most of us). The Galaxian theatre is an impressive sight though.

Hah, that bicycle on a roundabout is in Apeldoorn :)

Liège is the most depressive city I have ever seen in my live, at least the parts we saw when we drove through it years and years ago....but that part of Maastricht doesn't look very beautiful either  ;D

It is very strange if a TomTom isn't working well in Holland since TomTom is Dutch :)
However, a lot of roads have been changed (improved) here the last years so indeed time for an update I guess.

I'm happy for you Bruno, as long as you promise to forget silly comments about filling V3 with them instead of putting G3 there.

Oh and, I just HAD. to laugh when I read this:

    - Japanese Name: ASUTOROSHITI

indeed......Very well chosen name.... ;D ;D ;D

Unloading the beast...

I got the cabinet without any game. Let's try with one of my jamma board....mhhhh...let's say 'Ms PacMan/Galaga reunion' board :

It OK, except that board doesn't have a X/Y picture mirror mode, but it's just for the test  ;)

Well Bruno, congratulations on this fine catch, With this purchase you have enriched your arcade lifestyle and gaming experience considerably.  :spaceace:

Yes, the seller told me about you, when I mentioned DLF/ALS website... He knew the website by you  ;)
Thanks for the picture  8)

Great catch Bruno! What are you playing on it atm?

Well, it's currently running a lame 60in1 because I don't have many jamma boards  ... in addition, most of my boards (Namco) display the picture 'vertically inversed', and no dipswitch/setting to change that. I'm too lazy atm to inverse the Y connector on the monitor chassis (I presume it's the fix, isn't it?)

one is too shy for ambience  (remember Miami fred gameroom,   he had only one,  that looked weird  because of all dedicated around).  they look much better in pairs  ;).  many examples by arcadotaku forum by example..

I guess one will be enough. But I agree two will be perfect to cover both setup (horizontal and 'tate' mode).
I've no experience in 'modern' vertical shooters, except Ikaruga and Under Defeat on Dreamcast. Any suggestion about a nice one to try/play?

LOL! That will never happen ... I mean I don't need an army of Japanese cabinets!  ;D

What I like the most with such cabinets is : At least, for one time, I don't have to thing about repro/restoring stuff/artwork to find/board to fix... it's just a tool for playing games in very good condition... very solid & reliable!  It does no harm for once...  ::) :P And the high of the panel is perfect for my daughter  ;D

Did you slip that Sonic sign under your shirt as you left?   :D

Next time I'll try it!  :P ;)

I have to admit the map on it is maybe 7 years old... I guess it's the main reason!

I know that hall and that seller, does your cab comes from Rklok's warehouse?
Damn, that guy has crazy nuts items for sale, don't look forward when you buy him a cab if you collect old consoles or japanese stuff!
Moreover, his prices are really corrects, I bought him my Blast City at a really good price!

Ronnie is a great guy and a very reliable seller. And the best thing is that he only lives about 40 minutes away from me. ;D  If anyone here ever decided to buy a cab from him, then I gladly offer temporary storage for it util you can collect it (yep, I'll do anything to promote the Candies)

+1 for Ronnie. I got two (out of three) of my Sega candy cabinets from him, an Astro City (same as Bruno) and a Blast City.
And now that I am seeing this thread and pics, It itches to get yet another one from him :).
Nothing beats the look of a Sega Astro Cabinet, except a ROW of Astro Cities.

For me it's a 2,5 hour drive to Apeldoorn btw.

it's harder to find good modern vertical shooters.    Ikaruga  is "Tate" display.

for vertical display & gaming !,   Progear &  Akai katana   are Cave choices by excellence.    Rtype2, Rtype leo, Rtype  are the great classics.

loads more choices in "Tate" display...     Dodonpachi,  Ketsui, Batrider, Battle garegga, Ibara, 19XX, 1941,  etccccccc

Does the Xbox360 (or even XBox) has games that can be set in 'tate' (vertical) mode by the way?
Title: Re: :: SEGA ASTRO CITY :: Road Trip for a new Asian babe @ home ^_^

All of Cave's Xbox360 releases have that option.
And you can make or buy an adapter to connect your Xbox360 to your Astro City.
Will need some padhacks too, but then you have a nice setup going.

Microsoft XBOX
Shikigami No Shiro
Shikigami No Shiro II
Psyvaria 2

Microsoft XBOX 360
Shikigami No Shiro III
Raiden Fighters Aces (J)
Raiden IV (J)
DoDonPachi Daioujou Black Label Extra (J)
Espgaluda 2 (RF)
Ketsui (J)
Muhishi Sama Futari 1.5 (RF)
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Ver 1.5
Guwange (16:9 ratio in Tate, not 4:3)
Triggerheart Excelia
KOF Sky Stage
Mushihime Sama HD
Ikaruga
Bullet Soul
Muchi Muchi Pork
Pink Sweets

Better is it to make Playstation 2 (PS 2) controller adapters and then use PS 2 to 'all kind of console' adapters, which you can buy everywhere.

That is an easy one. I noticed you have the Nanao MS8 chassis (of course, Astro city's are standard equipped with them, a great chassis, just like the MS9 in the New Astro's). On the last picture you see two connectors side by side, and a plug (with yellow, orange, red, brown wiring) in one of them. Just put the plug in the other, free connector and you are good to go. Oh, and your image is nor mirrored, it is flipped.

By the way, i'm sure that you are aware of the Arcadeotaku forum, lots and lots of information about all kind of Candy stuff.  :D

Your cab looks great and the chassis is very clean. A really good purchase you made!  :D  Are you planning to get a marqueeholder with marquee for it? if so, you can buy them newly made through Arcadeotaku forum. I did a few times, great quality.

The 360 tate games are great, I imported most of them from Hong Kong and some of them are XBLA games. Unfortunately they don't get enough playtime, but I will soon be able to play them in my Blast city in 31Khz (640 x 480). That will be fun!  :)

Some more info for you Bruno:

- any good automotive polish or even mr clean magic eraser will do a good job cleaning up that white
- consider replacing the coin insert slot. They typically yellow like that.  For a few bucks you can get white NOS or chrome!
- I would look into a replacement CP or punch holes for remaining buttons to make it 6 per player for maximum flexibility.  But if you go that route, you'll also need to get more kick harness wire under the cp.

And you might consider this monitor treatment:

http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1251

Don´t know if it is necessary for your monitor, but I never regretted doing it and I will soon give my other NAC the same treatment.

Again your girlfriend!  :D I'm really getting jealous now.  :D My wife only loves one game, and just a little bit, which is Tetris. We once played it on a cab together, against each other of course, and I let her win (OK, she beated the crap out of me) just in the hope that she would catch the arcade lifestyle vibes. Unfortunately she didn't.  :'( :-\ :-[

About the Xbox 360... Is there any frontend/loader for it that replaces the default dashboard and looks more suitable for an arcade cabinet?

the feeling of adrenalin with modern shmups (manic shooters)  is due to "Hit box"... on old games, anything that goes to your ship kills it (or loses power as in 1943),    but in modern ones, you survive incredible waves and feel invincible for some time or seconds.. due to the hit box which is thinner...   combined to the mathematical patterns of the enemies bullets that are way more sophisticated than old games single shots,  give this tremendous sympathy from many new hardcore nerves gamers to shmups !

there's certainly matter if you Jtag the xbox360 to use alternate dashboards, and that would be a better way to gain access to DLC parts of some Cave games.

yep ps3 is a total loser for "Tate" shmups games.. even  good shmups games !!   xbox360 has such a great listing.   but some games are still "JAP" only locked (even some versions of a game are locked !,   Cave is specialist in multiple versions of some games  (it's called "Black label"    rarer jamma boards with higher difficulty).   (except if you have a xbox360 hardware Asian/jap  or JTAG one..   Asian is 220v..)

the best combo for nearly all shmups games  is  xbox+coinops + xbox360+jtag   but would require 2 different pad hacks... but with an astrocity pinout for inputs... you can put specific connectors,   some people sell hacked pads with direct plug-in  :)  (~50€/piece)     and it's matter of 3 seconds to change from xbox1 to xbox360.. no more time if you have a RGB switch too..

or you can sell your lungs for real good Jamma..

Thanks to all for your replies... I feel a little bit like a noob on this!  :P

Does the Xbox360 (or even XBox) has games that can be set in 'tate' (vertical) mode by the way?

Microsoft XBOX 360
Shikigami No Shiro III
Raiden Fighters Aces (J)
Raiden IV (J)
DoDonPachi Daioujou Black Label Extra (J)
Espgaluda 2 (RF)
Ketsui (J)
Muhishi Sama Futari 1.5 (RF)
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Ver 1.5
Guwange (16:9 ratio in Tate, not 4:3)
Triggerheart Excelia
KOF Sky Stage
Mushihime Sama HD
Ikaruga
Bullet Soul
Muchi Muchi Pork
Pink Sweets

Better is it to make Playstation 2 (PS 2) controller adapters and then use PS 2 to 'all kind of console' adapters, which you can buy everywhere.

Wow, impressive list of 'tate' game  :o! In addition of the real jamma boards, xbox360 seems the way to go to  :)
Cool, I still have an official xbox360 scart RGB cable somewhere. I think I've seen somewhere a SCART to Jamma adapter? Someone can confirm it's a way to go?

Can you provide me good links for buying the necessary stuff for a 'clean'  XBOX360 -> Sega Astro City please?

I'll go for the 360 hackpad pictured, in addition of a Scart To Jamma adapter.

If you want a really good scart to jamma adapter, then this is one of the best choices: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28069

I have version 1 and it works great. It has an audio and a video amplifier on board. Also check out his Playstation controller boards at this page: http://etim.net.au/scart2arcV20_orders/orders.htm

In short: with Viletim´s scart to jamma adapter and the PS2 controller board you have the best solution to connect RGB scart consoles (360, Gamecube, SNEs, Saturn!!!!, etc. etc.) to your Astro City.

Of course you need ´Playstation to other console controller adapters´, but they are easy available. I have them for a lot of consoles, including the 360, DC and Saturn. For the 360, the controller converter pro is a good choice, will cost you about 20 bucks.

Oh, and don´t forget that an Arcade CRT monitor can generally handle resolutions up to 640x480, even if you have a try-sinc chassis. So before you connect a 360 or other highres capable console, make sure that you set it on forehand to a 640x480 video output. Else the monitor will not sync, but even worse, you might damage it!!  :o

:!: another very good option..  keep the astro for horizontal shmups in jamma 15khz.   and if you want a second cab,  go for a "naomi universal cab" as a second japanese cab.   because..

1. they dont cost much nowadays.  about 350€ !!  (you just have to "chop"/ cut the legs  and it becomes nearly as this picture of "naomi "new" net city")
2. the monitor is 31K.  so it's VGA ready.   (the xbox360 has a direct Vga output  with the good cable)
3. add a hackpad too.
4. ready to enjoy good Tate shmups in hi-resolution.

I've just done the operation, I was expected a 'flipped' picture just by changing the plug as you described, but I got this

Well, I presume it's now just a matter of sync pot' to tune? Not here, under the panel (only for geometry/colors stuff)...

There are additional monitor potentiometers I can reach via the coin door...

...but which one is related to the sync ?  ???

The pot you're looking for is on the other side of all the pots on the chassis .. look for something called "15 khz".

is a possibility. But:

1. they are cosmetically not the best looking ones, even chopped, IMHO, especially standing next to an Astro City
2. the 31K monitor in the Naomi cabs are not the best ones around, and for some reason have very often (heavy) burn in problems,
3. Hi-resolution means in this case 640x480, which is still awesome.

I know what is causing this, it is because of a bad advise from me. Just put the switch back in the original position, because what you did was switching the monitor to 24K and because the game pcb´s video output is 15K, it isn´t and it will never sync.

My mistake, I told you that this was the flip connector.  On the good side, you now know how to switch to 24K.  :)

But I also have the real solution for flipping the image, you have to flip two connectors on the monitor chassis, just scroll down this page for a clear picture (I saw that you have the connectors on your board also): http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=16156

Ops!  :o

Ok, I'll revert the switch operation (24 -> 15). Switching x/y yoke polarity sounds more logical.  8)
But not sure if I'll do after all... it seems that only the Namco boards use that specific orientation. I just wanted to test few of them, they are the only jamma boards I have here ::)

2. just have to get the good opportunity. But there are some wide/narrow problems for sure

you can use the 24K medium resolution of the astro with 15khz jamma... there exists some adapter to improve the quality

indeed: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=33659

I once had it, but it was too much hassle for me to switch the monitor (chassis) each time between 15K / 24K when changing between 15K game pcb's and the 360 for instance. I know that there was a homemade extention harnas made by emphatic, so you didn't have to crawl inside the cab anymore  ;D

But that harnas didnt work on my MS9 chassis, so I sold the Ultracade converter. But it is a great device with great results. Expensive however.

My New Astro City has an MS9-29A (rather than MS9-29S).  The difference being that instead of that white 15/25 plug, I have a relay with a bunch of extra caps/resistors.  The chassis auto-senses the frequency, and switches accordingly.

So for me, it makes sense to have a UVC (for 31k games) + MAME PC for 15k goodness via JPAC/ArcadeVGA.

Well, finally tried an MGCD (dreamcast to jamma) converter :

Very disappointed about it!

- Not a 'plug & play' jamma wiring : need some rewiring, so what the hell they call it jamma?!
- OSD I can't hide! I'm sure it's possible but no documentation on my model, tried googling  but no luck...
- Not compatible with most of games, and so... working 'in time' mode shit!
- The worse : picture definition is ok but a 'wave' slowly moves on the screen and deforms the picture...ugly as hell!

My conclusion : Do not use this! I sent it back to the seller...

Damn! Few guys here & there told me it wasn't the good solution for playing Dreamcast games on Astro, they were right...

Pity.  :(

Yes, I know that these things stink. They are pretty cheap, and it looks like a nice all in one solution, but the quality is stinky also.

Why not check out Viletim´s stuff (see the SHMUP forum). Yes, more expensive, but much better quality and much more flexibility (with Viletim´s PS2 breakout board and the everywhere available PS2 to other console controller adapters you can hook up a lot of consoles to your NAC).

What you need is a 31khz -> 24khz or 15khz video scalar.  It will work with all VGA input and give you the most pixel perfect display.  You can then use a different solution for controls.

yep neogeo MVS is so easy.  one slot  and you change the game,   multiple slots allows to change without on/off your precious cabinet.

viewpoint or some other stuff  (king of fighters..., metal slug... sports (soccer brawl, slam dunk..).   varies from 30-100€ for some unusual games.

rotation is pain.    you need a second TATE cab for shmups  :spaceace:

Not sure why this original 'Namco seal sticker' has been applied on the paper?

My guess is that sticker was a part of a kit that contains PCB + manual + flyer/marquee, and that sticker to be applied ...on the pcb maybe?  I've seen such Japanese kits for other games, but maybe I'm wrong? I'm not familiar with such Japanese stuff

Anyway, just the right size for a Sega Astro City 'marquee'  ;D
