Title: :: Pilgrimage / Road Trip part II - Galaxian3 @ FunWorld in USA ::

Here's the first part of this story

[click on the picture for the full story]

So it's 4:34PM... we are leaving FUNSPOT  :'( ....

...but ... I know there's something BIG on the way back to New York... located somewhere in Nashua (New Hampshire) : FUNWORLD  :P

So... less than two hours later ...

... 6:19PM ...

Here we are :

On the parking... ready to enter the place... I'm very exited  :P ...

... because I know there is a GT-6, up & running here  :-* :-* :-*

What? What is a GT-6? Ok, let's call it 'GALAXIAN THEATER' if you prefer  ::) 8)

Oh my god... see, it's there  :-*

Now, see in video the *real* first encounter between me and this baby... a magical moment for a such G3 fan like me  :P

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/news/galaxian3-funworld2.jpg) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpy575rX67U)
[click on the picture to watch the video]

Ok, as you can see on the video : the game is not fully working  :-[ As far as I can see :

- No more background musics / sounds effects / voices... except few of them, generated by the boards (not by the LD footage).
- Sound volume is too low, no more surround and no more flash light.
- No vibration
- ...

So, yes... the game is playable but at least 80% of the fun is gone : the ambiance provided by light/musics/flash/vibration/theater surround  :-\
It's a little bit sad to see that game in that condition, because it won't give to the players the real Galaxian3 theater 'experiment'   :'( ... and the kids who are trying this may be very disappointed  :-\

But...I'm still happy to see a such beast running in a pubic game room... because... I mean... how many Galaxian Theater up & running left in the world? I'm sure less than 10 :
As far as I know :
2 or 3 in Japan, 1 in Canada, maybe 4 or 5 in US (including the air RAID conversion)... and ... nothing in Europe? (except mine, but still unassembled yet)...

Anyway...

What a beautiful *monster*  :-*

It has assembled directly against two walls : back wall and right wall ...

The biggest arcade marquee  :-*

Let's go inside...

And now... of course... my authentic 'ArcadeLifeStyle' pictures  :P ;D

Few advises :

- Do not be afraid to be ridiculous
- Never pay attention to the other persons around you... you'll forget them as they will forget you few minutes later...
- Try as much as possible to be on the pictures... it gives authenticity and you let you real good memories. In addition, your pictures will be different than the ton of generic pictures already available somewhere  ;)
- If you have a great idea for a special picture, do it...do it immediately...or you'll never do it.
- Do hesitate to take pictures for the fun, in many cases, the best pictures are the ones without any arcade cabinet on them  8)
- Pictures are just for fun... so take some fun during them
- I know all the stress around a road trip, and the problem to solves... many questions to answer... you're very tired.... BUT ... never forget to take pictures, or you'll regret it later...
- If you don't have time to publish a road trip, then do not publish it. Take your time, and do a nice story  ;)
- Think about a story...
- Improvisation and originality are the keys  8)

So let's go :

Did I already tell you I'm a die-hard NAMCO fan?  ::) :P  :arrow:

Holy shit... it's really huge... I'm as small as this theater is big

By the way, did you recognize my custom-made t-shirt?

Yeah! It's the one I wore during the Galaxian3 road trip here

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/roadtrips/Galaxian%203%20Theater2.jpg) (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=231.0)

OK, who want to play with me? What?! I'm a little bit alone here  :pac: :pac: :pac:

At least, my wife is not so far...  :-*

In the lobby of the theater...

And at the end... impossible to resist... here's once again my collector home made t-shirt  ;D

Now, this is official... this GT-6 has been 'Nunoized'  ;D

Ok, a last check before to say good bye to this theater... let's check the high of it... approximatively  as you can see  ;)

Well, we know we have a long trip to drive back to New York... but... let's check for some classics here before to go...

A Pac Man :

A Centipede :

...and ... and ... nothing else  :-[ Ok it's funWORLD, not FUNSPOT here  ;D

Hey, see the size of this racing cab':

Cute!  :-*

OK, now we really have to go...

Let's set the nav sat to ...heart of New York  8)

Once again I have to complain about the temporary camera I'm using during this US trip : Kodak Easy Share M883! Never buy that shit!

Now it was supposed to be pictures of huge landscape ... when approaching New York... but the result is these pictures  :-\

I'm very tired... it was a big day... rain... no light on the road... but finally ... entering into New York...

Fortunately for me... it's quite calm at this late hour...

...almost the end... I've done a lot of road trips... but driving for an 'Arcade' story here, in New York, is a little bit... unusual  ::) ;D

And here we are... the Alamo car rental agency :

Let's check the stats :

630 miles / 1013 km on the road , 4 states : New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire
Total : 16 hours  :-*

Woow... FUNSPOT and FUNWORLD the same day :P  What a day  :P  :-*

Nice pictures of the G3! Makes it more exciting to see the build of yours in the future 8)

I just noticed this sign with "...real Mazda driving..."
Please tell me you found this at funworld  http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=833&page=1#2693  :o

I didn't see the Namco's full scale simulator. Because its size is very similar than the GT6, I would say it was there *before* the GT6, at the same location?
Damn! I didn't pay attention to that, I was too focused on the GT6, and like you, I've just saw "...real Mazda driving..." on pictures now. I've should see that there, and asked to someone over there

Anyway, the video is now available. See the link in the main post  ;)

I just watched the video, that game is so cool! 8) But like you say, it's a shame there is no music and cool sound effects :(

Nice story, as usual. But I can believe that you want to go back to Funspot, one day for two places like that is already far too short, Funspot alone must be a two-day visit.

Perhaps some of the forum members will meet there early June.  :D If possible (and I can plan my own time), I will be there.

Well, that has to be love at first sight seeing another G3!!

And! - remember to make the roof height in the V3 at least 30cm higher for proper ventilation!

Wow, I cannot believe you managed to find another Galaxian3 still being operated. Galaxian3 is my most favourite game of all time, the best I can do at the moment is to play on my PSX with Sony flight yoke stick, Sony surround system with REL subwoofer on my 42" plasma screen.

I used to travel to a place in the UK called Blackpool (North West of England) where they had a GT-6. It dissapeared about 4 years ago and I have not been able to find out what happened to it.

If I come across a GT-6 I will buy it and save it, awesome game. Otherwise, I will have to build a custom Starblade/Galaxian3 theatre once Galaxian3 is fully emulated.

DarthNuno, you are the Galaxian3 master....I obey!

What have you done with your Galaxian3?

Regarding the GT-6 you mention (Blackpool), it's maybe this one (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=122.msg3633#msg3633)?

DarthNuno that GT-6 looks like the Blackpool one, I wonder what happended to it.

I will post some pictures of my Galaxian3 PSX setup. Also, I should add that once Galaxian3 has been 100% emulated I am going to build a cockpit cab for both Starblade and Galaxian3 running in emulation. I just need to source a Starblade controller.

Oh, just seen you with a cool collection of cabs including a GT-6 in this months Retro Gamer, nice! I was wondering if your GT-6 was still in pieces or if you had rebuilt it. The article answered my question, good work.

*BUMP*  ;D

Six years l8ter, here's how the Galaxian3 Theater6 -still located over there- looks like...in video :

(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/forforum4/galaxian3johntube.jpg) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVtNmzSHQuc)

Thanks to John from John's Arcade for being there, following my looong time request ...much appreciated dude!  :-* :-* :-*

So well, the game wasn't plugged... so we can presume it's currently not working?!
Anyway, this one must ABSOLUTELY be saved! This is the only THEATER 'Galaxian3/original game' equipped left in the US as far as I know.
Which means it should includes all the important stuff (pcb & LD media)
The last for sale was located in Canada, and it got severely damaged () in shipping due to a careless carrier... It was in 2014.

So yeah, you must initiate a rescue mission, guys! ...and well, if it cannot be saved, I'm still up for the boards, LD media/players...anything!  ;D I badly need some spare for the only one Galaxian3 located in Europe... mine (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=231.0)!  ;)

Right now, it needs to stay here and there are some things in the works. DO NOT DO ANYTHING YET.

Guys, this G3 Theater is in great danger now!
Someone reported to John (from John's Arcade on this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMGtTbEMuHI) at +/- 51 minutes) that they are working on it right now, behind this blue curtain

...what they are doing? Disassembling it? Replacing the original game (They had the 'Zolgear' mission loaded in it) by the l8me Air Raid game (see that usual conversion right here (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=597.0)). If so, the original G3 parts must be saved at least!
I'm trying to get in touch with them but no response so far...

Right so it turns out this Galaxian 3 is still there a year later... Still turned off and with a blue curtain over it.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening with this one??? Why has it sat there for over 2 years with seemingly no work made on it???

Hi Tedward and welcome to DFL'  :)

I presume you live close to that place? What a shame, if nothing is done, one of the last Galaxian3 in US will follow the same fate than the others : Air Raid conversion... or even worst : fully scrapped!  :'(

I can't help you any more with this one than I already have, I can only tell you that you can get in touch with fun world over facebook messenger if you are lucky (use the fun world facebook page).  Please try to be as gentle as possible and maybe you will get a response. I was able to ask them where they got the machine and they responded with directly from Namco. It may take them 1-2 weeks to respond. I would help you but I don't live close to the place and have never been there. I do not think they would convert it to air raid because from my understanding the company that makes air raid is not around anymore, thus they would not be able to convert it. I have no idea what they would do with it otherwise.

The Dave & Busters chain is the only ones that converted to air raid, they had a few G3's across the USA and Canada from what I understand and they are a huge company so they are able to pay for custom things like this.

Hi everyone sorry for the late reply.

I don't live near Fun World actually, I live in the UK, but I have a friend who has been to it recently over in the US. A few YouTube comments on John's video back up my friend's info.

So now that the company that made Air Raid has gone bust- the most logical thing that's going to happen to this Galaxian3 is unfortunately, scrapped  :-[ it's either sat there unused for 3 years because Fun World can't be bothered to do anything with it, or they've tried repeatedly to fix it but to no avail. If it's the latter then it's only a matter of time before it goes!

I will message Fun World on Facebook and report back any info I get. Although I would love for this to go to the UK if it gets saved, if this is the last one in the US that hasn't been converted to Air Raid it deserves to stay there. If it does it's best for it to go to a better location- somewhere like Galloping Ghost or, more realistically, Funspot.

I have someone coming to work on it tomorrow to see if they can get it running again.

Hmmm... will message them tomorrow to see if it is fixed.

Right I got a reply back from Funworld again- thankfully it's only been a day or two between them replying to me. Apparently the guy they sent over to fix it diagnosed the main problem being something with the game boards- not sure if he just skimmed over the thing and just said it was that, but DarthNuno can you provide any advice on these?

(also, I'm sorry I haven't sent any pics of this GT-6 yet, my friend who lives nearer to there did try to get some pictures but apparently someone had a problem with it? which is weird considering John got that entire video there. would be appreciated if anyone else managed to get some pictures of it.)

We have to keep going with this! This game has to be saved! I messaged funworld on facebook and they responded to me and they said they had someone come in to look at the galaxian 3 and that they were trying to order a part to see if they could fix the issue. I told them they could ask me if they were having trouble finding a part.

Edit: they sent me another update, it seems they are looking for a chip on a PCB. They said they ordered it and it will be in by next week, we will see what happens.

2 seats are working just no sound but the 4 are not working. There are 3 boards 1 for each pair of seats the problem is in these boards because if we move the working board to the other pairs of seats they work. We have changed 2 chips on a non working board and that did not help.  We do not have the schematic for this board (I call them IO boards but that is not the correct term).  Do you know anyone that has the schematic?

Right, got a reply. @DarthNuno we need your help on this one  :-\

I got a reply too! We need Bruno's help! I don't want this game to die. Its a problem with the boards on the game. I messaged Bruno to help and told Fun World about this forum.

Anyone have the Galaxian 3 Schematics, Namco System 21? They asked me for the schematics, we need to find them at all costs! If no one has them I can dig around.

Aren't parts of the schematics included in the Theater 6 Installation Manual that DarthNuno posted several years ago?

Well, I was in touch with them on facebook (Fun World of Nashua!) in July 2017, already asked for symptoms :

We are having problems with the board that we call the IO board. There is one board for every 2 seats. We have gone from 6 seats to 4 seats to 2 seats to no seats working. We move the working board to seat 1& 2 because that is where you get into programing.  I had a tech look at it and she said one of the 2 seats she got to coin up and play so she thinks she knows what to change to get the other seat going. I am getting the board back today and if it worked she will repair the other 2 boards.

I replied this :

This one drive the three pcb (with a picture)
Check the voltage with and without the 3 personal pcb connected : +15, -15 and +5v
Give me your values please
This PS goes mad and can destroy one by one your personal PCB (input)

It looks that two from the three 'personal pcb' have an issue, and unfortunately the manual scanned doesn't include the schematics for the 'Personal PCB'  :-\

Did you send them the manual? If not I can send it to them. Maybe I should try asking Namco directly for the schematics, I can talk to Namco on Facebook. I am sure anyone could talk to Namco on facebook too.

Is there any way to get the schematics from another manual if that could be found? There are a few different Namco system 21 games and theoretically they should all use the same boardset unless G3 has something special in it that no other game has.

I think its best to keep the communication going at this point.

Well over the past weeks me and Sara have tried a lot of stuff to try and save the very last Galaxian 3 in the USA... she's contacted Namco and got a reply! They are looking for the documents needed to fix the Galaxian 3, hopefuly they still have them! If they don't, possibly no-one else does  :-\

We've also been looking into the Dave And Busters side of things to see if any of the locations have left over spares from the GT-6 to Air Raid conversions, haven't gotten far with this though but it could also work, who knows what they still have in their back rooms...

And speaking of Air Raid, I have been researching more about that, I found an old link to Tsunami's website which I had to go through the internet archive to access and... no mention of the Air Raid to Galaxian 3 conversions whatsoever!

Tsunami seem to have gone out of business around 2011 after some sort of a merger with Global V.R... and still absolutely no word on how the conversions came about... the only link to Namco I saw was a partnership they made in 2001 with their European branch.

But... we have got a few people to contact from their website if absolutely nothing else works. Surely they had the entire details of the theaters (including the schematics) if they were allowed to convert the theaters to Air Raid!

I am going to back to digging into this... I am continuing to try and reach someone at D&B, I know exactly who I need to reach but I need to find the person in person and speak to them face to face which means I have to catch this person at the location and its going to take me a while since I have to get there when the person is in.

yeah I really don't like Namco now - I have contacted them many times about saving the big machines they have or even the unreleased games.  They could easily make money off these machines or games by porting them.
I was able to Hack my Starblade to have it do things other Starblades are not able to do.  Namco had no interest in helping me figure that out and me and my friend went to town figuring out the signals the game was sending to the board to hack the board and get it to do things the Starblade manual says "Do not work".   Namco I really despise right now as a company and I hope they see this message.

I will do my best to help preserve these games, but still have no luck finding a Mirror to work with this machine.  My game still has no mirror and I really don't want to turn it into a projection screen or mount one inside and keep it original.

So now we know what is happening in the US?. What is the status of your Galaxian? Was it put back together again?

I was at this arcade last week, they are currently trying to repair it. Here's hoping it works when the arcade opens up tomorrow.
