Title: Finally got one: Sprint 2
Post by: Luigi on September 23, 2014, 11:31:08 AM
Yesterday was a very happy day. Jochen Hippel came by to deliver the Sprint 2 cab he had loaded into his car in Hilversum because we couldn't fit it into ours due to the three Eurocade-cabs. I had bought it from Oliver (Cebulba, the guy with the countless concoles, homecomputers and TVs ;) ) who brought it to Hilversum.

Though I had never seen nor played a Sprint before, I totally fell in love with the game and the cab. And so I was looking forward to get one.

OK, here are pics.

This (obviously) is the bottom of the cab. Two feet are completeley gone, we removed the remaining two so we didn't damage the floor in Dirk's hall (because on one the foot itself was missing and the other one was crumbled).

Here it is in full beauty.....we decided to let it rest for a while so it can get comfortable with the temperature  ::)

The back of the cab. Easy access to (almost) all parts.

Meanwhile Dirk arrived and we talked a little about repairing Space Zap-PCBs (esp. about finding a working custom chip on GORF-boards) and this and that. And while the guys kept talking I soldered an adapter for the Shuffleshot-cab so I could hook up the speakers to that single 4pin connector in the cab. The adapter worked and we played two rounds of Shuffleshot. A great party game, I'm really looking forward to the next party where it can be played :)

Before Jochen left we switched on Sprint 2 to see if/how far it works. To my very surprise it almost worked perfectly. The screen still has a crisp (given the age it is coming from and it has) picture, the burns are almost invisible. The monitor artwork (both, the bezel/marquee and the cardboard) are perfect. The lit cone switches work. Gameplay: the white car (Player 1 on the right) runs perfectly. Player 2 (the black car, player 2 on the left) steers to the right, no matter in which direction the wheel is turned. Guess it's one of the optos, should be an easy fix.

So what can I say? I'm totally happy I bought this cab. Thanks to everyone who was involved :)

A little detail....the sticker in perfect condition in front of real scanlines :)

To do:
* clean the cab
* repair the left steering wheel for the black car
* check if there is separate sound for player 2 and if it works
* repair the wood on the bottom of the sides
* is the marquee area supposed to be lit?

Congratulations,  nice looking machine.  Unfortunately we couldn't play it during eurocade,  but, I am sure that I will some day.

Weil that's already better than at RGE....Cebulba said the machine was there and the PCB was on top of it.....I had heared who had fixed the PCB and so I figured we should give it a test and I installed it :)

I think we had two cars not responding so one thing has already been fixed "magically" LOL. Yeah I thought about the opto's too. I still should have a couple but not sure if they are the Centipede kind as this is a much older game.

Yeah I noticed only one car sound too...maybe something simple like the speaker or a wire.

oh and yes, the marquee should light up:

Great you finally got it and happy with the cab.
The TV and mechanics have been repaired by Winnie the Chassis Master himself (from german AZ board) so you won't have any problems with the s/w monitor within years to come.
He told me two weeks ago  the steering worked well on both cars - so it must be a transportation issue (from Germany to Hilversum) and an easy fix?!?

Note: You didn't bought it from me. I just forwared everything for some old buddies (and now I know you in person you are in the same "older buddies" line )

Looking forward for playing this beauty at your place anytime soon - now that I live closer :-)

Today we took a closer look at the PCB. One of the 7474 TTL for left player was sick. Replaced it, Game worked (...for nearly an hour). The the screen went dark  >:(
Fortunately no Monitor- but a small Video-Output-Issue. Ok, replace of the faulty 7410. Voila, works again. Now some little sound-hazard. The NE555 for second player died.
But after fixing it with a new one, everything is fine again. Lets see how long.

Same Problems with our Midway cabs. The Space encounter lost his 'tunnel', hmpf. Guided Missile got wrong vertical lines in the picture (Shifter-Problem)

Maybe these very old games from the Mid-Seventies are reaching their final days. I read somewhere, that the TTL-ICs have a limited lifespan of approx. 40 Years

Hopefully we can keep the old bastards alive for some more years.

Keep it up Dirk ! I dont believe those stories.......i mean, I dont want to believe them !! ;)

Computer Spaces are still running....those have TTL older than 40 years :)

WOW :)

So now I have to go for the bottom and install new feet ;)

Oliver, great you live near us now :)
But I really consider to remove you from my 'arcade buddies'-list now that you called me an 'old buddy'  ;D :P
