Title: :: Luxembourg Road trip + WIP :: S.T.U.N. RUNNER from Atari
Post by: DarthNuno on December 11, 2007, 09:35:04 PM
December 2007, in a dealing room... somewhere in Luxembourg...

...I'm working... and suddenly... a reminder is coming up ...  Oh no... another meeting ? another urgent task to do  ??? :-[

But hey... wait...  ::) ...

Hey... this is 'road trip' time  :D ...and for this one, a very special team-mate : Patrick... just in front of my desk  ;D

Ok, let's start the serious work  ;D

Patrick founded a good timeliness... and because he knows I'm in the 'Arcade Scene', he has decided to share the treasure with me... Niiice  :-*
He's looking for pinballs. His wife has access to the old stuff for an old game room in an amusement park.
He asks me to visit that place together and see what we can find... I like that  ;D ... 15 minutes to drive... and here we are... in that old amusement park depot. Because his wife is working for that amusement park (in fact, it's now a zoo), she was already there, with a van... and waiting for us  8)

Hey...Nice find : a dedicated Atari's S.T.U.N. RUNNER  8) Of course, I won't let that baby longer here ! Let's load it immidiately :

Opsss... the game is too high for the van... We have to remove the topper

...maybe we should have removed it *before* trying to load the whole cockpit  :-\ ;D

Done  :)

I'm happy for today  :P Now, let's make Patrick happy too  ;)

He gets this fabulous Bally's FATHOM pinball... first  ::) 8)

Let's prepare it for loading :

Hey... it's me... I can also 'work' on roadtrip... and not only taking pictures for stories  ;D ;D ;D

Get ready for the travel number 1  8)

Only 25 km to drive to reach the Patrick's house... in France... but close to one hour to drive (traffic jam grrrrr  :ghost:).

At the Patrick's house, we unload the pinball in his living room  ;D

...and what about my S.T.U.N. RUNNER ? Well... No more free space in my house... so Patrick accepts to keep the game in his garage  :-* :-*

Go back to the depot, in Luxembourg... another pinball for Patrick : Eight Ball Champ  :)

...and this time, Carine is more efficient than us to remove the pinball legs   ;)

Travel number 2 : go back to Patrick's house ... he is now the proud owner of two pinballs  :D Welcome to the fabulous world of arcade & pinball @ home Patrick  :P And thanks again for keeping the S.T.U.N. RUNNER in your garage... until my new gaming room will be done  ;)

Good luck for the pinballs restoration  ;)

PS : Carine would like to have a Racing game now

After one year, it's now the time to bring back this game at home (Nuno's Lair V2 is ready)

 :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Can you believe it, my mother help me to bring back this 'thing' at home ... ::) :P

... and Freddy  ;D He swore  not to touch a cab' anymore but  ;D       :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

Good condition but very dirty as you can see

And...................................................... back on this! ;D

This cab' has never been plugged since I got it  :P
As you can see, it's not a small one

I know nothing about that 'cockpit'? ... Is it working or not ? What about the monitor ? PCB still inside and ... complete ?  ???

Let's check BEFORE plugging the game for the first time ...

Still a lot of dust as you can see...  ... but I prefer to see if it's working or not *FIRST*, before cleaning all the thing!

Let's check the identity

Let's open the back door. Hey, it looks very clean inside...

... the board looks very clean too, and nothing seems to be missing at first sight  8)

Ok... so ... it's time...

POWER ON

...

...

...

Holy Jesus... it's working  :P :o  :-*

Beware, bringing in dusty or dirty games to your lair.... SILVERFISH.....

If you know of these bugs, they will destroy any paper items such as posters, sidearts, collectibles in packages etc.

Once they're in, it's damn near impossible to get rid of them!

If possible, use an air compressor and clean out the games somewhat before bringing them into the lair!

I went to crazy lenghts to make sure no silverfish were moved from the old house to the new game room.

 ;)

Silverfish like moisture. If you have them there's bound to be some water or moist surroundings involved somewhere. Haven't seen any of them in my cabs. I've seen others though like spiders in my  Centipede (no, really !) and a (dead) lady-bug in my Galaxian :D

Yes! A good surprise  :) Well, the game was in storage since almost one year, without any access to it. When It came inside my game room, I was already working on many others projects with a highest IRQ number  ;)

Beware, bringing in dusty or dirty games to your lair.... SILVERFISH.....

Yes, in fact... I've removed the WORST before entering the game inside the game room.
...but I really need a true workshop for games to restore  :-\

Sometimes I wonder if there are weird powers amongst us. I think it must have been 10 years ago since I last saw a silverfish, and today, while I was working at a customer, one was running across the desk I was working on !!!

Yugh.

2nd time he wasn't so lucky. He's in silverfish heaven now. Sorry, I hate those little creepers.....

By the way, what a GREAT addition !!!! LOVE IT !!!!

I've only played S.T.U.N. runner on my Atari Lynx and it's a pretty good game on that little machine, so I can imagine how it is on the real thing !!! Whooohooo seriously nice score my friend !!!

Welcome to The BOOST CHALLENGE!!!!              I ALWAYS  kicked everyone out of the top place!!!   LOL  ;D ;D ;D ;D

 ;D

...but regarding the sound... well... this is the *bad* part of the story yet : The game has some sound problem  >:(

I can hear the sound of the ship, sometime a part of music when you select level, and something the female voice... but there is problem with other sounds/voices/effect. I've just compared with mame...

I sure wish I would have ordered that T shirt back in 1989!!!

...A T shirt? huh... OK  :) ... understood  ;D In the game menu settings

Man, this one should be a true collector now  :P Regarding such game contests... back in the DayZ.. what a motivation for the player, wasn't it ?  :)

I'm still in the menu, let's take a ride ...

Statistics :

Average Time/coin: 91 sec ? Expensive game

ERROR COUNTS : Does it supposed to help me?  ;D

Let's see the High Scores

Do these high scores are good? I'm not (yet) a S.T.U.N. Runner player... so I can't tell  ::) :P

I've got few months ago a Stun Runner board from US. At the time, because I hadn't the cabinet at home, and because I didn't know if the game was working or not, I thought I was a good idea to buy a working Stun Runner board.

Here it is

It's supposed to be 'Tested & Working'... yes yes... it's even written on it  :P

OK, so let's swap the current board, working but with some sounds issues, with this board... on location

Let's plug the game... Yes  :) That board is working ... but ... still the same sound problems  ???

Well, let's check inside the cockpit... OK ... what's this small additional board ?

OK... understood! THIS is the sound board!

Now, I know I have two working Stun Runner main boards, and I know the problem is located on that small card!

But... what could be wrong on it... it looks very clean... the condos 'looks' fine ... maybe a ram problem on it ?
There's no error in the test mode of the game... strange... any idea maybe?  :?

I posted it on the KLOV forum Bruno, lot's of knowledge overthere !

I'm sure it can be fixed. What exactly are the sound issues ?

Apparently, the sound boards often went bad on STUN runner:

It's time to clean up the screen, the bezel... and this

Maybe I should keep the insect, put in in amber, and make a nice keyring...like this

Too bad I didn't think about it previously  ...but next time, I'll  :D

Ok, the monitor + bezel are cleaned

Hey... a S.T.U.N. RUNNER is supposed to have a nice marquee, isn't it?

Here it is...

It needs to be cleaned too ...

Done... and 'on location' ... *bonus* : the original neon is still working  ;D

Let's continue the cleaning.

Because that game operated in a theme park for small kids, a lot of sand everywhere :-X

...well... not only for small kids... because of these cigarette burns  :?

...very ... very ... very old bubblegums ...

Arghhh... Cannot remove it  :-\ I've tried to pull it off with a screwdriver, but it won't go  :-\ Any advice for removing it ?

OK, let's remove the sand :

For the rest, I'm using a 'cockpit cleaner for car'... because it's mostly plastic parts here  8) Except the cigarette burns, it looks better now

Funny, see the speaker location on this game :

I think it looks nice with the Turbo Out Run cockpit on its side...

...because of the same RED plastic color  8)

Let's take a ride now...

Monitor is in very good condition, very nice, clean & clear picture :

Maybe it's available in your area?   www.googone.com

Yes, this is very very close... but unfortunately it's now the same  :-\

The model for sale on your link is the Part number A048974, and here's mine :

I need this ref : AUDIO II A047190

What could be wrong on a so small board?  :-[ I'm sure the sound problem is located on that aux. board, because I have TWO working main boards, and the problem is the same... Maybe a voltage problem? Didn't check that yet  ::)

Thanks for your help anyway  :-*

Yeah, so that one on Andy's site is one generation later than yours. I bet it's not compatible. Real shame as it's cheap and working.....

I just was browsing his on-line store and saw it and thought it +might+ be the one on STUN runner as I remembered you had problems with it.

I have no idea, could be so much things....checking the basics first is a good idea.

What actually is the problem ? Maybe it can be localized that way...

Back on this.

I went yesterday with my wife and daughter to that (very)small amusement park in Luxembourg.
Last time I went over there ? ...  pfff almost 15 years ago  :-X
Of course we went there first for a walk with Sun, ... but ... even If I had the information that there's no more game room inside that park, I had to check it by myself!  ::)
In my deepest 'Arcade related' memories, I remember that STUN Runner in the middle of the game room, and also a Dragon's Lair (hell yeah!) ...but more deep in time... also a kiddy ride!
And I remember I was so scared about that one! So scared that I have not tried it at the time!
Well, no more arcade games here but ... yes... the kiddy ride is there!  ;D

...cannot tell if it's the same one, but I recognize the 'attraction' : moon, spaceship, rotation...  8)

Guys, ridding that one now would be a kind of 'exorcism' for me... I mean ... something like 'Fear Factor' or something ...  :P

Ok, I didn't try it, but I hope my daughter will do it for me in 2 or 3 years  :-*

...and it's a nice one too!
God, I definitely have a weak spot for kiddy rides.
One day, when I'll buy my arcade castle surrounded by arcade woods, I'll start a kiddy ride collection.
