Trying to restore a Zaccaria Crazy Kong Cabinet
« on: July 09, 2011, 06:21:35 PM »
Hello all

After playing around with mame on pc,i already know it didnt give me the feeling as the old arcade.
So what im gona do build a mame cabinet or go for a original cab.
After looking around a lot,i finaly found a cabinet that i realy wanted to have Crazy Kong.
I spent a fortune on that game when i was young
When i got home me friends were already waiting to come play ;D
back in the 80' we also played the games together.
So we spent a few hours playing, and i can tel you,was a long time ago we had so much fun.
6 adult talking about the good old days, and fighting who's next :D
This is my first cabinet, and after yesterday im sure i want more.
But now i need to focus on my CK cab,and try to fix it to his original state.
First some pics

.

Control panel seems to be oke some light burns in the plastic, grafic is 100% .
Marque also is 100%.
Bezel, were did it go,so i need to find me a new one,if there are any.
joystick,as seen on the foto above,i dont think this is the original one,it doesnt go smooth either.
Buttons seem to work wel and seem to be original.
As seen on foto above there is a new power board,i also took the original one.must look wat is wrong with it
previous owner said it became hot,but working, somthing with the fan maybe.
PCB looks fine to me,i cleant it,have taken the chips out to clean the feet.
Coin door, the previous owner gave me the zaccaria one but havent got a clue were it is now.
The thing were you put in your coins,is from williams now,so need to find a new one.
Monitor, starts pretty quick, looks fine 2 but then again i dont know much about these things.
Side art is stil desent, some marks but he it 30 years old.
So lots of stuf to look up and see if i get some parts.
But first i wana fix the color problems i get in game.
i already cleant the pcb.
as seen in pictures above, mario is green, the monky is purpel most of the time.
just lots of things that dont look how they must.
i already tryd degaus, that solved some grafic problems, but not all
strange thing is wen i tryd it before transport to home mario was the right color
so is this a monitor or pcb problem

OMG !  a FITTER cabinet !

I am sure Bela is interested in this...  I have a spare empty "spacestation" cab if you want to exchange it..
and i know that bela has a spare crazy kong bezel...
maybe you guys can work something out..

a zaccaria coin insert is present here too since i slaughtered the spacestation out  ;D
also i got a spare powersupply here and lots of other original parts...

Then i really think you need a repro sticker  ;)

The colors on the monitor look like the green is missing..

As for the control panel, i did a vector of the panel which i still need to print, so i can print it double if your are interested..

The stick is not the original, they replaced it with a suzo (STC) like most of the zacc sticks where replaced with..
the bezel is an original zaccaria starsplash one.

Unfortunately I don't have that spare bezel,  I didn't buy it from Thorsten since you sent me yours. :-\
Thorsten has 4-5 spare CK. bezel and I guess he will come to Eurocade, so if you want one you can arrange with him.
By the way you have a nice cab there with that Fitter sideart. ;)

thnx for that info
Can you stil buy those sticks new ??
Been looking around a bit for joysticks, but there a lot of diffrent ones.
With leafswitches or micro switch,my joystick is mounted under the wood of the control panel,
So basicly wich stick looks most as the original one.

I am planning to make repro sidearts, but my sources are not the best out there..

I have searched everywhere for better pics of it, but without succes.
But eventually i will have a vector of it, i just need time, and the vector que is not empty yet  ;)

Anyway, i have this picture which i have already enhanced a bit, so i need to scan my side for the layout and start with it:

for color i can still use this as a reference:

This is the original joystick, but its not a nice stick for play, it feels like a "mini pin" in your hand...
anyway, i left it there for originality, not for comfortability  :D

https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2126.msg24917#msg24917

for the repro sticker you should make an official order on that threat though  ;)

The e-mail adress of Thorsten was sent you by P.M. :-\
Btw., I have a bended marquee for Fitter, but it fits for the bigger cabinet type, so in this case I'm looking for a cabinet for my marquee. ;D

mario green ,monkey has the right color now, girl on top is pink
there is green in the barrels

monkey after first lvl seems to be good the ones for the other lvl's are pink

evrything seems a little pink

Where are you located in NL ?  If not too far i can stop by with my working board and see if its the monitor.

from what i see is that you miss green, strange though that mario is green...  that makes me doubt..

how are the voltages ?  especially the 5Volt line ?

If its the board, i know a guy who is a master in pcb repairs, i only dont know if he got time / is in the mood to fix it for you..
My two spare boards are still waiting here to visit him one day  :D

but you can always ask  ;)

Oh yes, i can, the question is when  ;D

soon i will start scanning the cab for measurements and layout, stay tuned  ;)

i wil check that tomorow, sinds i dont got a meter here right now.

must also say that wen i played the game by previous owner, mario had the right collors.

but im first gona look at the voltage then tomorow.
to make sure they are right.
must also say beside the colors the game runs great.
thnx for the info again :)

i stay tuned ;)

So little break from work, and i checkt the +5 volt line.
on the power suply its 4,78 volt
on the board it is 4,68 volt
there is a buton to higher and lower the voltage for the +5volt line on the powersuply.
Must i turn that higher so i get exactly +5 volt

that could solve alot of problems  ;)

sometimes it helps too to clean the edge connector so the resistance is less there

I shouldn't blame the monitor for the color problem.
A monitor color issue (missing or malfunctioning basic color) will affect all the colors on screen while I see a good white and white uses red, green and blue.

I'd rather investigate the video output stage of the pcb, specially the color proms.
