Thanks to Laschek I might soon lay my hands on one of the greatest games ever, Moon Crest (licenced by Zaccaria, original known as Moon Cresta).
Moon Cresta is one of the few games that were available back in the early eighties in my hometown, and I played it a lot. Thankfully I have an original PCB and I still play the game now and then in a Jamma (Candy) cab. but nothing beats playing a great game in an original cabinet, and that's why I'm very happy with this one:

As you can see it's a beautiful cab and it seems to be in great shape (I'm getting real fond of these Italian Styled cabs since my Zaccaria Vanguard is almost done). I'm anxious to see the inside.
The seller and I agreed to a deal and if everyhing goes as planned, Friday afternoon will be road trip day. :)
In the meantime I would like to get some more information about this particular game and cabinet, but the www source is sparse with it. Anyone any additional info?
-
Congratulation, it's a great game! I also have great memories on that one.
Very hard to play with the three ships 'in one'... Moon Cresta rulez!
:spaceace:
-
Wow! I thought I bought one of these a long time ago on Ebay DE - only to find out a couple of weeks ago it's a stock Quasar with the wrong marque :(
Moon Cresta is one of my all time fave games, too. Hoped to find the gorgeous Nichibutsu Japanese cab but one has never surfaced. The glass and control panel are interesting - shame they went with L/R buttons rather than a joystick. Please scan in the CP when you get a chance :)
Can't wait to see what the insides are like. Lovely find, dude.
Paul.
-
Congrats Erik!
Looks in very good shape !
Zacc = always +1 ;D :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Please scan in the CP when you get a chance :)
I think that is an obligation, isn't it? ;D
I will ask Etiénne to scan it, I'm sure he is happy to do so. ;)
-
Congrats again Erik for the find of the century, also cant wait to see the interior!!! :spaceace:
Too bad, that the guys on KLOV don't publish our pics too often, this should definitely be there.
-
Just ask Muerto to submit the pics, and they will get there ;)
As for the scan, sure, i can bring the scanner to EC12, but it needs to be removed from the CP to make the scan, so i dont know how and what, but i think you can bring it along separate if you decide to bring the BW
-
Congrats again Erik for the find of the century....
Mmmmmm, to speak in Zacc terms I would definitly say that your Space Pirate is the find of the century because that one has dedicated artwork all over plus it is a vector plus it is a license of Cinematronics, plus it had the ultra rare Hantarex BW vector monitor......but the Moon Crest is a good second because it's not listed on KLOV and there is not even a flyer on the arcade flyer archive....
-
Congrats Erik! I was very interested in that, too but I couldn't pick it up in a decent time and a person I've contacted to pick it up for me couldn't store it :(
At least it goes to a real collector and won't end mamed! :)
-

Good point, have to agree! ;)
-
...... Space Pirate ...... has dedicated artwork all over .....
Hm, is that the case? I thought that Space Pirate and Space fortress share the same side art and bezel.
Anyway, your post triggered me to do some more search about the art of Moon Crest. :) Not much to find though.
There are more cabs with the same side art image as moon Crest, for instance
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Moon%20Crest/Afbeelding113.jpg)
and
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f307/ckong65/Moon%20Crest/Afbeelding114.jpg)
But with both cabs there is no art connection with the marqee, but there is with Moon Crest:
Notice also that the color scheme of the Moon Crest side art is different than with Phoenix and Quasar
This could suggest that Moon Crest was first, and for ease of use Phoenix and quasar, also 1980's games, got the same side art as Moon Crest, with a diffrent color scheme and no matching Marguee art.
Or Moon Crest was not first, but for some reason the Zaccaria co. decided to put a matching Marquee on the game.
Fascinating.
And the bezel also remains somewhat of a mystery. Both Space Fortress and Space Pirat have the same bezel on the official flyer, and the above shown Moon Crest has it also. Again, all three games are from 1980. But the bezel has a specific kind of twinkling star, which is not on the side art of Space Fortress and Space Pirat, but it is on the side art of Moon Crest.
The CPO of both Space Pirat and Moon Crest show these same twinkling stars.
You guys might think `bloody hell, what is he babbling about', but I find the Moon Crest cab very mysterious and also very beautiful.
Well, one night sleep and then I will see the cab wit my own eyes. ;D
-
I never noticed that there was a colour scheme difference (I knew that there were two side arts from that era - the Fortess art and the Quasar side art - seemingly used interchangeably). I have a few of the Quasar artwork style. I wonder if I have both colour schemes...
Paul.
-
Very nice cab :)
-
I also saw that colour difference, but I thought that is just a bad quality photo.
This cab is already very, very interesting and we didn't see the interior yet!!! :spaceace:
-
Well....the shooting guy in a space suit doesn't seem to make sense on either of the three games it is used on.
Something else to consider is that Quasar is (more or less) the only original Zacc game (although developed by an Italian company called Zelco) so maybe it was first used on that one.
However......looking at the color scheme of the Moon Crest I could say it was the original. Look at the planet/sun on the bottom left....it looks like a star/sun with the MC color scheme with the yellow and red nicely combined, it looks like a moon or planet with the (blue-ish) color scheme of the other games.
All in all I prefer the MC version. I like this philosophizing about what happened during the production of these games etc..... why certain decisions were made etc.
-
...they used whatever cabs they had available and whatever buckets of ink happend to be in the store room? ;)
-
So guys, I'm back home. It was a crazy drive, made more than 800 km's this afternoon and evening. And like André I also think that the German Autobahn isn't what it used to be. Nowadays there are only road works, with crazy speed limits, traffic jams and accidents. Where are the good old days where you could put the pedal to the metal?
I blame it all on the Ossies, who got all the government money after the Anschluss. West-German roads suffered because of it. And because he economy is now not in a good shape, even in Germany, the German government thought that it was a good idea to pump a lot of money in road works, good for the jobs! I can see that it is needed, but why all the highways at the same moment?
Fortunately, on the way back, in the evening, things were much better, I could maintain a cruising speed of about 150 km/h, only slightly dropped at road works, where I still could drive about 110-120 (my philosophy is to drive as fast as possible through them because you don't want to stay long on those narrow lanes :) )
Oh, and sorry, no road trip photo's this time, was too busy watching the traffic.
Anyway, I had a succesfull trip. I brought back a nice and rare Zaccaria Moon Crest, for 50 bucks! The seller told me that he thought that I was a lunitic, driving all the way from Holland for such a dirty, non-working game (more about that later). I told him that this was peanuts, and that I and others (You Guys! ;D ) have done much stranger things. He just shaked his head!
About the cab, it was, and still is extemely dirty, especially on the bottom and on the inside. Probably one of the dirtiest cabs that I've ever seen, although my SW cockpit isn't very clean either.
Anyway, underneath the dirt, the cab is in great shape:
Bezel: like NOS
Marquee: likewise
Side-art: 8+ (left side) and 9+ (right side)
CPO: Hm, the usual cigarette burns. Not that much and I now know about the great trick of Robin, which will make the CPO like new again, NOS
Monitor bezel: 9, just one little torn on the lower side, easy fix.
T-molding: 10-
Originality and completeness: 100%, I think. Everything from the inside looks original: wiring, trafo, monitor (MTC 90 chassis), documentation (MTC 90 manual and Moon Crest Technical User Guide, in original Zaccaria enveloppe), everything else and ..... the Game PCB.
OK, not 100%, the backdoor has no lock, the coin door had no key (fortunately I could release the CP hinches from the back of the cab and then unscrew the coindoorlock from the inside) and the stickers and tags are missing at the back (Etiènne ... ? ;) ) That's it, everything else is there, even the floor chain.
About the game PCB, I have an original Moon Cresta PCB, but it is stored away. But if I follow the link to this very reliable site topic: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=1558.0, then I see the same board that is in this Moon Crest. At least almost the same, let's say 99%. The 'daughter-board' on the Moon crest PCB has one more rom, but the handwriting on the eproms is exactly the same!!!! That is strange, how come? I will take detailed photo's in a few days.
I didn't fire up the cab, I first want to clean it a bit and check the obvious stuff. The seller told me that it didn't work, but I did test the marquee light and that one works. ;D The fact that the seller didn't see or hear the game working might be because the backdoor was not mounted. And we all know about back door switches, don't we?
So, the game might work after all, I will no that pretty soon.
I'm now going to bed, photo's will follow soon, probably after the weekend, which will be a busy one, not hobby related :(
-
congratulations on that rare catch, erik. 800 kilometers - that really nothing. why was the seller shaking his head? :P
looking forward to seeing more pictures and to finding out how / if it plays ...
CPO: Hm, the usual cigarette burns. Not that much and I now know about the great trick of Robin, which will make the CPO like new again, NOS
what was that "great trick" again?
-
Stop teasing!!! :D

You can see how dirty the cab is inside, very dirty. But today I had some time to some cleaning and start checking the electronics.
Until now only the marquee light is working. The monitor chassis is also powered (I see 5 red leds burning, but there is no neckglow. The game doesn´t boot also. So enough serious questions for you guys coming up.
-
Very nice, despite the dirt is looks in great condition.
the MTC90 is not the most fun monitor to work on.....
-
Very nice cab :)
-
Nice cab :)
-
What a great catch!
Respect
-
Seems like it is complete with all little details, looks awesome, especially the cpo. ;)
-
So.....what (extra) cab do you need to sell to make space for this one ? ;D ;D
What a great deal by the way, the only known machine of this game, totally complete and original, even the original docs included, for that price :) You're going to need to do a lot of scanning for history's sake :D
And pics for KLOV.
-
So.....what (extra) cab do you need to sell to make space for this one ? ;D ;D
yeah, didn´t think of that before I bought it, but got an obvious reminder when I squezed the cab into my gameroom. ???

Ahh, just put the lawnmower and the bicycles outside ;D ;D ;D

I made a PDF scan of the technical manual for moon crest. What is the best place to post it so it is taken in a database?
-
you can upload it to my ftp if you like, then i can put it in the www area, so it will be downloadable
-
Huh?
Arcade Archive of course: http://arcarc.xmission.com/ !
THE mecca for all arcade related schematics and manuals.......and some nice arcade related pictures too.....if you do some digging in the folders.... :)
Mail it to arcarc ( at ) xmission.com
They added my Hoei Meteor manual too.
-
That's a great find. I've never seen that style cab with an MTC-90 in it, all the ones I've seen have been KT-3 based with the earlier round marque ones (Astro Wars/Galaxia) being MTC-90 based. Suggests this game predates Quasar in terms of production run.
The bootleg PCB that's in there and the lack of Nichibutsu references anywhere is hinting that this may not have been an "officially licensed" game. Post a link to the manual when it's uploaded somewhere, maybe some information in it about it's origins...
Paul.
-
Uploaded it in case anyone else wants to see it. Not really much in it - wiring and PSU schematic along with DIP switches.
http://www.zzzaccaria.com/manuals/MoonCrestTechnicalManual.pdf
Paul.
-
Yeah, bit sad that the PCB schematics aren't included but I think Zaccaria never did that right ?
-
Not often, no :(
Paul.
-
Moon Cresta pcb is working again
No sign of zaccaria on screen
-
:spaceace:
So, maybe Zaccaria didn't have the licence for this game after all.
I am so glad that you got it to work, it probably is my most favourite game.
-
Nice to see it running, can't wait to see it in action in that beautiful cab. :D
Any news on the monitor chassis Erik?

not yet, but a forum member offered to work on it. When I have the opportunity, then I will hand over the monitor to him. :)

Cool :) One step at a time in the right direction :)
Paul.

Cool cab! Wonder why they called it Moon Crest but on the program it reads Moon Cresta? ???

Because Zaccaria only made original cabs, they never get any ideas from different companies. ;D :spaceace:

It's time for an update. Isn't she beautiful?

Thanks to Robin, who fixed (replaced) the old non-working monitor for a nice NOS WG combi. Last thing to do now is to clean up the CPO.
-
That is a beauty :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
It's very nice yes. But I hate those damn Zaccs for being so small.... we, the Dutch, being the tallest people on this planet were not made for Italian cabinets :)
Same goes for Nintendo's....give me ATARI'S any day :)
-
Thanks to Robin, who fixed (replaced) the old non-working monitor for a nice NOS WG combi. Last thing to do now is to clean up the CPO.
Looks perfect to me, good job, guys… oh, and Robin is also a black belt in CPO cleaning, he explained some secret techniques to me yesterday evening :)
-
It looks fantastic!
An even more fantastic beside the Vanguard!
I am really jealous :) ;), and will search for it to complete my zacc row.
-
I wish you good hunting.
-
Very nice!
Paul.
-
Looks kickass, congrats! ;)
-
Super, love this cab.
-
@ckong any chance to get some pictures of the inside of the cab and instructions on the CPO plexi so i can finish restoring mine?
Sadly you are the only person i have found who has one.
Thank you
-
Matteo, I can repro the instructions card easily. There's plenty of other examples of moon cresta instructions available on flyers that are exactly the same as Zaccaria Moon Crest. The font used is also easily reproducible since I have scans of other Zaccaria instruction cards like your Space Pirate CPO scan.
-
Nice! Thanks!
I cant fond any pictures online as reference.
