Title: my biggest project yet.... a gameroom
Post by: Laszo on June 05, 2013, 11:27:54 PM
Finally after years of preparation it is time. Game room Time  ;D

I started this project a long time ago by checking out on the internet what people are doing regarding game rooms. I saw lot's of cabs, pins, pool tables, black light, bar neons, glow in the dark carpet, memorabilia. The more game rooms I saw the more I was thinking that's cool I need that too, that's cool I need that too. Soon I realized that it would never fit.......... No matter how big the room it would be cramped.

So time for a new approach...... Let's see except for fellow collectors who would I have around.... other friends? Yes, Family?... Yes.  Hmm, what about a limiting  :o the number of games? Good idea, I can still swap games between storage a game room  What else do I need... not much really.

Time for some support from a pro. So a friend of mine, who is not a gamer nor a collector, but he is a designer, came to the rescue. Although not into classic arcades he did love the Tron movie. So inspired by that we game to a design. Would love to get some input from you guys.

Wow, nice! Too many pins for my taste, but i like the Tron theme combined with the wood, also love the bar area!

Very nice, lots of space. Are you more into pins?

Great layout, and with that much space between pinns and games, you can easily fit more when you buy more!

Nice ambiance !

My guess is that this friend is not into gaming, and not a collector, so took the pinballs as a room filler.

some people just think of pinballs when you say "i am into old arcage games"  ;D

No, Leo is actually more into pinball AFAIK.

Love the design, really gives it a roomy feeling !

Good morning Guys,

Thanks for the nice comments, it is always good to have some cheers when you start at ajob this big  :)

The collection that you see is indeed not reflecting my own collection. I'm a coinup collector so I love any amusement divice that needs coins. But André is correct I do have more pins...... But that can be changed  ;D, I got a most wanted list with mostly video... We used pins to fill out the rooms because they are big so it gives you a feeling about what is possible and what would be to much.

Great layout, and with that much space between pinns and games, you can easily fit more when you buy more!

I hope I can withstand that, I love some space in between to enjoy the side art. .... Less is more was a design starting point.

i dont get the point (AND the style reason) why people do such long lines of pinballs so much time    ??? :-\  . the bar area sounds sweeter

So now that we got a game room layout, we need a place to realize it.

What about redoing the garage?

hmmmm maybe it is a bit small and crowded   :(
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vnBenYvpLbM/UbTk8SDbppI/AAAAAAAAABM/XrZhcAnLHqk/w1044-h693-no/IMG_20130606_215020.JPG)
What about the garden shed?
That won't fit 20 plus cabinets and a bar  :-\

So what to do....any suggestions?  ;)

Great and exciting project!
Overall, I love the nice wood loungy feeling of the place.
Not a big fan of the blue painted wall that gives a "pop" mood to the wall which clashes too much with the luxury of this type of wood.
Painted wall is a good idea but I'd prefer a plainer and simpler design.
Also why go with a Tron Legacy picture for a gameroom filled with vintage machines? I think the original TRON movie is more iconic of this era.

...and if I may say, I don't understand the workflow here: why work on the design of a room with the wrong dimensions and the wrong machines in it?
...would'nt it be better to find the room first, see if the collection fits and then work on the design?
...or maybe you're hiding some info from us for teasing purpose?...  ;) ;) yeaaah, that must be it  ;D

Hey, these are not negative comments by the way, just my 2 cents and of course to show you that I'm really interested in (read "jealous of") your project.
I don't even have decoration or painted walls in my gameroom... wait... I don't even have a gameroom  ;D

No offense taken :D ,we where just tinkering with the Tron idea: "A game room in our world that is a gateway to the futuristic, inside the computer world of TRON. The newer Tron legacy image was the most futuristic one we could find with a "gateway, looking through a gate kind of feeling".... but it is just a study (any help is welcome ::) ) . We will need a HD picture in any case because we want to print it on glass and backlight it. The painted wall is a kind of invasion  from the world of Tron into our world.

Yes, another topic about the realization of a gameroom. Great, I love it already!  ;D

I think that the layout of your gameroom is great, especially the bar part. The color scheme is a matter of taste, I guess.

And as Chris said, you are probabbly teasing us and are going for a new building, don´t you? Else the design of the room woulödn´t make sense, space wise.

Find that hard to believe, that would mean my house would be like 2 by 4 meters or so.....

@Michael, I don't agree. These rules keep our countries very pleasant to live in.  I wouldn't want things like you see in Belgium, a house next to a company, then a farm and then another totally different house. We have tiny countries with a lot of people living there, there needs to be some order.

Those rules also prevent us from building factories that collapse and kill thousands of people, you should know that as a carpenter....

Sure sometimes there are too many or unneccesary rules, but in general I prefe them over the chaos that will happen without them.

What are all the tubes doing? Keeping the water level down or freezing the ground so the sides dosent cave in?

Those pipes indeed keep the water level down. Ground freezing is very expensive and only used for very large projects (thinks in terms of tens of millions of euros) where lowering the ground water level is almost impossible, or even dangerous.

Anyway, this looks like another epic gameroom build thread. I love this forum!  :)

How many m² are you planning to build underground? And what will be on the surface? A house for living?

And a question to lowering the water level....the water will return, isn't this going to be a problem?

If you stop the pumps, the hole will fill up with water right away. You will have a nive duck pond  :) When constructing the cave you have two options, long poles the anchor the construction to the underground, or put enough weigth on top to keep it submerged... Otherwise it will floating up like a boat.

Let us Dutchies handle the water guys, maybe we could help out along some German rivers ?? ;);)

I seriously considered doing something like that over here in my backyard. I wanted to get a pre-fab "cellar". These are surprisingly affordable. However, I'd even have more water problems I guess being in the far west of Holland. It would have meant making a dam and the same pumping (24h. during the building process)

I also would have needed "piles"/poles to keep it from sinking in the soft ground AND needed the "extra heavy top" to prevent it from staring to float on the groundwater. And seeing I have so little room anyway plus I couldn't think of a proper way to get the cabs in and out on such a small area I had to ditch the plan....

in more eastern parts of Holland, where there is sand grounds, you just need to dig a hole, but the pre-fab cellar in it and cover it......sigh.....

tHe biggest advantage is that I would have a room as large as my entire backyard, which would have been awesome..... O well....

Can I give an opinion on this.... even though you already started.

We (ie me) cannot have basements here in southeast Texas, The water table is just way to close, start digging and you got water.  It looks to me that you have the same environment there,  Why do this?  Am I not understanding your idea?  Not being negative, just looking out for you.  If I lived in a desert environment... for sure id' have a basement!    To me, it looks like it might be a maintenance nightmare?

If you have the same close water table:

You will have/could have damp walls
You will REQUIRE an always on dehumidifier that will pump out the water.
You will need emergency sump pumps on hand and a portable generator (what if you have freak storm with heavy rain and power goes out?)

Ventilation is very important though to prevent condensation.

My inlaws have a basement which is partly below ground water level. It's built using prefab concrete elements and it's as good as completely watertight. In a corner of the basement garage is a sump pump in case of heavy rainfall, but since the build of the house 10 years ago they never had any water in the basement. But hey, we're talking about the Dutch here, we all but invented building in wet circumstances  ;D

And freak storms with power outages only happen about once every 10 years or so, in the whole country  :)

Yeah, power almost never goes out here because all our cabling is in the ground instead of the ancient poles still used in the USA. Only the biggest transport lines are still up in the air here (although at some spots, even these go underground today)....well that's one advantage of soft ground...

When was the last time you were in North America?? All new housing developments for the last 3 decades had everything running underground (power, TV, telephone, and now fiber). Only old areas with 100+ year old homes have wire above ground.

As for power for sump pump, they do sell battery backups and are common items to install when your sewer lines in the house are below the mains under the street.

The most important thing to do when tackling major construction is to follow the codes and building styles of where you build. Things that work great in Texas might not apply in northern Finland! (Eg water heater outside, ducts running in the attic, etc)

2011: https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2767.0

The vast majority of what I've seen in New England is on poles. My uncle has a new house, specially built for them, but they connected him to the poles that were already in the area of course. My cousin has a 70s house near Boston and even his glass fiber connection is running along the poles.

There are plent of places in Europe where there are still poles too though, Im sure it's a very regional thing, again, because we have soft soil about everywhere in our country it's pretty easy (and not too expensive) to do it.

Kinda looks like swimming pool construction so far...  ;D

Hope the weather holds up for you during this part of construction, or it will be like pumping OUT a swimming pool.

Do you have any sketches or picture ideas of what you are doing?

Info Please!!!   :D  :D  :D  :D

Don,t worry Sonic, the dirt has been delivered at the city depot, it is clean white sand with a certificate stating it is clean so it can be reused and it is actually in demand.

Rain does not matter, I'm allready using pumps to keep groundwater out.... Otherwise there would be 6 feet of water in the pit..

I wonder which member of the local council you bribed to get a permit for this !!!

Oh, and I could have used a bag or two of that sand....got a hole in my pavement near my gameroom ;)

I would have loved to do that, rather than 2X4 wood studs..... but it would have priced the house wayyy out of my reach. Also, If I could, I'd do the whole house as a metal building... Zero maintenance!   ;)

This will be the bar area. In my first plan it was a traditional bar...... Now I 'm redesigning the area. I don't want to play bar keeper ... standing behind a bar serving drinks. Playing bar keeper I did enough when a was still at the Uni  :D So I'm thinking about a bar table where people can sit/stand around and a bar wall for the drinks... serve your self  ;D

These red bricks are just standard buildingbricks for inner walls. They are called poriso. Within Europe every country has not only an own style but also their own building materials. These bricks wil be/must be plastered.

I think it is fun to see the different materials used for the different gameroom projects  ;D

Wow.... That is complicated!    Am I not understanding.. but do yall have extreme winters? ..I mean, to be heating the floors?

Looks like you will be putting in a boiler?   When Bruno built his game room, it has no Air Conditioner that I can see, Just heaters.   What is your typical temperatures and humidity levels there throughout the year?

Also, why not have a colored concrete floor?  The pipes would be safe forever!!

When you put the heating system in the floor, you don't need  elements on the walls.

I have it in my home and it's really nice

the major drawback to underfloor heating is the cost, used to have it in an old building I used to live in - is damn expensive!
Title: Re: my biggest project yet.... a gameroom
Post by: level42 on February 27, 2014, 10:49:15 AM
Its pretty common here although I don't have it as I have a Parket (wooden) floor. I have a regular central heating unit (natural gas) which pumps hot water to radiators throughout the house, like the vast majority of heating is over here).

Advantages:
- very even heating of room
- saves energy
- very comfortable
- no radiators necessary (nice in a gameroom !)

Disadvantages:
- cost of installing (but when building a new building cost is much lower because there is no top floor done yet)
- no drilling in floor
- in the rare event of a leak, you'll have to hack out the cement
- using isolating floor coverings is not advised. So better no wood or carpet, tiles are ideal.

We live in a mild sea climate so we have neither extreme winters nor extreme summers. It's just something people feel worth investing in for comfort and ease and it does save energy and thus cost.

One interesting note I found on Wikipedia:
Zeer schadelijk voor piano's en alle houten muziekinstrumenten, vanwege optrekkende droge lucht.
=
Very harmful for pianos and all wooden musical instruments because of rising dry air...........uh-oh......

I recently discovered that too when I got the bill from the energy company. Had a double garage build last year for my gameroom and car + storage etc.
Expensive but very comfy. I did dail the temperature back temporarily to 10 degrees celcius since then by the way :)

Guess it won't be that much of a concern for our hobby. At least this way we don't have to be afraid of damp or moist arcade cabinet bottoms.

I have underfloor heating and my bill is lower than before.

It is a new type though, it doesn't need heavy bases etc like previous systems, or need to be turned on at the beginning of winter and take several days to reach stable temperatures, we even have a wooden floor over it. Granted, the building is well insulated and we have "double flux" ventilation with a heat exchanger that means we don't need to open windows to air the place out, temperature and humidity are constant. The difference is really impressive. It's also nice not to have radiators taking up room.

Supposedly the problem with pianos and even some people (those with bad circulation in the legs were affected) are with the old system. I can't tell, I have good circulation and no piano :)

Good to hear that you save money on it Liquidx.
Well, I can't compare it to how it was before our new garage was build, because originally there was only an old brick shed without any heating or insulation.
Our new garage is very well build and insulated so I expect no problems :)

Everything is said...  ;) Some input from my side. The floor heating/cooling I have chosen because it removes the need for wall fittings. It also gives you a nice warm floor so I can do some bare feet gaming  :D

The system has temperature control per room so I can give the cave it own climate. The cave also has automated ventilation (duco box) which is controlled by CO2 and moisture sensors. So I will be able to (remotely) monitor that the cabs don't dry out and the gamers don't suffocate  :P. To make sure the place does not get overheated during intensive game play I have decided to put in an additional airco unit. (these cost less then a 20 year old pinball now a days  :? )

Currently the concrete floor has been poured in and next week we will start with the tiles, toilette and so on. The ceiling will be lowered at the bar area and to keep the noise at acceptable levels I will use Asona SonaSpray black to cover the ceiling direct above the machines... this stuff can do miracles when it comes to noise reduction.

Currently I'm working on the light plan.... Any suggestions regarding lamps, spots, black light and where to make custom neon is greatly appreciated.

So that's it... I'm gonna play with some BL string led I bought today.

Light plan advise:

Big f-lights to work. Make sure you will have nice bright even light.

NO lights in "play mode". Just neons etc.

Yeah something like this tl be fitted to the ceiling but I'm also thinking about a black light setup with both led and conventional blacklite tubes or blubs. I alsowanna do something with neon. Any suggestions where to order custom made neon?

Tested the BL led. It is true black light but gives also a lot of light in the visible spectrum.

Awesome!!  I've never seen BLACKLIGHT LED!!

You say it makes the proper glow?  Does it give the fluorescent glow on blacklight related items?

I would love to be able to ditch all the T12 bulbs in favor of this!

But:  Does it put out as much light as a T12 bulb?

It is proper black light but not exactly the same. The led gives more visible blue light compared to a t12 but still also a lot of invisible light that makes stuff glow.... I'm going to setup some testing.

When you search on youtube "black light led" you can find some comparison postings showing the difference. I'm planning to use some compacts on the ceiling together with led.

Some updates from the cave. The cave is getting some hardware. The cave needs heating to keep the arcade nice and warm, the cave needs airco to make sure we do not get overheated, the cave needs one two pumps to make sure we do not drown and of course we need POWER..... 40 A should do the trick

I don't know the amp for a video cab but a pinball in full operation pulls 1,3 A then we have a fridge, a cooker, light and sound so 32 A is cutting it a bit close I think.
Title: Re: my biggest project yet.... a gameroom
Post by: level42 on April 15, 2014, 12:51:29 AM
1 standard 16A group can deliver 3600W max. (in 230VAC countries !!!)

A regular upright video game is about 100W maybe a bit more. My SW cockpit is rated at 220W but I think it's a bit lower in reality.
They always put "worst case" numbers on devices. You do have to realize that during power-up, the amps are a lot higher than when running normally. This could create a surge if you power up several with one switch.

Anyway, 3600W would mean about 36 uprights MAX. I wouldn't go over 30 to stay on the safe side.

At the early Eurocades in Ridderkerk we had all machines on 3 groups, carefully decided (about) equally. We never had a problem (apart from when RobinHolland was fiddling with a cab ;) ;)).

Anyway, always better to be on the safe side, extending later is always more expensive that including it now.

You're really going all out on this project...   :D

Are you in any danger of flooding if power is out, pumps unable to operate?  Are these pumps for condensate only?

Since you're doing this project very well, Consider a standby generator?

The pumps are mainly for the bathroom that is also in the cave and some rain water. Yes when needed I can disconnect from the power grid and use a generator :-)

Wow, that is pretty rare here. Sonic, we live in a small country with very soft soil. All our power lines (and all others) are in the ground so power outages here are pretty rare. Almost no-one has a generator since the risk is so small.

I even gets better, when you click on the picture it gets larger and everything turn back to normal. It is an amazing combi between the ipad and this forum. ..... I'm used to have the ipad button on the left and then when I take a picture it is upside down but only in this board. When I take the picture with the button to the right it is ok... It's simple, just first make the pic with the camera app, and then select it from "existing pictures" when uploading.

It is weird though, on my Mac, using Safari the pictures stays upside down, on the iPad using Safari it does turn the right way when I click on it...

Oh well, just first use the camera app and it will always be OK :)

Like André I also found some time to get things done. My wife is the driving forces for the mancave at the moment

First she organized a Halloween party for the kids so that forced me to get some friends together rent a van and get machines in the cave and install the light show plus music.

Next up was a newyears eve party with a big diner.... We needed an extra table so this pushed me in construction my lab table that was on the todo list for a while already.

Lets see if I can get some pictures  :?

Update still can not upload pictures... My camera does 1200x1920  so keep you posted...

So first some picture from the move. We rented a van with a hydraulic loading platform. Really nice except for the maximum load. Only 600  kg. That is only four pinball machines  >:(  .... We figured that there was a safety margin so we loaded 8 pins per tour  :P . That mend we needed three tours to get all the pins and video's from my storage in Amersfoort to the cave in Apeldoorn  :?

The unloading was easy with the hydraulic platform but we needed to get them 4,50 meters down into the cave. Luckily the cave has an outside stairwell with double doors and a double gutter left and right from the stairs so that I could use my custom made trolley to lower the goodies into the cave.... The rest is just a question of men power.... No problem it a mancave so there plenty of that  ;D

No Safari needed! If you double-click an image on the desktop (or wherever) it opens Preview. Go to Tools, then Adjust Size. If you select more than one image at a time, then you can batch resize and save them. Handy for quick rotation using Apple+L or Apple+R too  ;D

The get the right mood in the game room we needed a fun light plan. I used two strings of indirect light. This led stuff is amazing   One string is 12 Volt backlight. The other is a 24 volt RGB-W string. If you ever buy led strings .... go for 24 volt, much brighter  :spaceace: Further more I used this nice tl twisted lamps in red, blue, green and backlight. Two laser units, a mirror ball, a rgb floodlight, smoke machine adapt machine, a 1971 seeburg bandwagon jukebox. I still need to build the bar, get some neon and ........ any suggestions.... anyway this is how it looked when the kids had their Halloween party.

This project was long due, but because we needed a temporary table for the new year party I had the chance to combine these two projects. mine has a noticable hum while playing, I read that some rubber(s) need to be replaced for that.
Mine also starts too far into the record making it miss the real start of the song. I'd also like to disable the "soft start" sound at the beginning of each play back....
