Issues with PiMame
« on: November 26, 2013, 01:51:20 PM »
I was trying to run some arcade games on the Pi, but I have no idea what Mame version it is running and I ran into missing file troubles:
Donkey Kong plays without some sounds (for example jump sound is missing).
Galaga88 says it misses g88_prg6.rom
Does this mean it runs a really old Mame version, or a very new one?

Just found out it has 2 versions. A 0.37.5 version and a 0.106 version. So I need to have old-style ROM's for the old version apparently, they have different rom-file names in the ZIP.
Thanks for the DK sounds, but no idea where to put those....

I love the PI

I have replaced my server that hosts the pics here with a PI

the samples go in a subdirectory called "samples"  ;D

check your mame.ini for more details, it should be in there where the paths are going to

EDIT:

Quote
SOUND SAMPLES

The sound samples are used to get complete sound in some of the oldest games. They are placed into the 'samples' directory compressed into ZIP files. The directory and the ZIP files are named using low case!

The sound samples collection can be downloaded in the following link: http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/gp2x.cgi?0,0,0,0,5,2511

You can also use "clrmame.dat" file with ClrMAME Pro utility to get the samples pack.

You mean as a subdirectory of the Roms folder?

no, under the mame folder, just like the roms folder

in windows it looks like this :

C:\MAME\ and under that are the standard folders:

 artwork
 cfg
 ctrlr
 docs
 roms
 samples

i assume its the same under Linux

EDIT:

Check this, its a manual to install it under ubuntu, and ubuntu is based on debian, which is in turn also used on the pi (raspbian)

http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/10/how-to-install-mame-multiple-arcade.html

like said before, edit your mame.ini file and check for the section that has the paths

if desired you can change that path to where you put your samples.

Ah, why the @!#?@! (Q*bert) are they all using folders with . in front? That way they are invisible on NIX systems.

The folder is already there, buy somehow the built in web-ftp-client only shows the first 10 items in each directory. Regular FTP access made things a lot easier.

Finally managed to sort things out.
The Pi has both AdvanceMame, the current version that has better compatibility but is slow on various classics like Donkey Kong
And Mame4All, a Android/ARM/PSP optimised version based on really old (2001) 0.37 MAME.
The magic word to find stuff for this version is to look for Mame4All, not for 0.37. You can also use ROM files from Taito Legends CD's as these run on old MAME too.
