Details from seller:
Cabinet is good but is missing back door, side art is nice, control panel overlay has some cracking only where it wraps around the control panel. I have never plugged the game in so I don't know if it works or not, it is one of those projects that I never got around to working on.
I can arrange the shipping to France.
PM for details.

Next goal, a Frogger? Robotron?
-
Got an LV2000 for that 6100 already here my friend ;)
congrats !
-
cool, congrats!
I have the cutest Robotron for sale: it was (profesionally, I'd say) shortened from above the coin bucket door. It's a bit lower than a cabaret, but with all other dimenstions of a regular cab. A real eyecatcher!
Cheers,
Marco

Damn, I just got this message from Mark, the seller of Tempest, with some pictures.
Hi Erik,
I pulled your Tempest out of storage to bring to my shop and wrap for shipping and in the process of loading it the hand cart pressed on the neck board causing it to crack. I did not have the back door on at the time because there is not lock to keep it in place. There is minimal damage to the board and NO damage to the tube or any other parts, just a crack in the fiber neck board. Some of the solder traces lifted on the neck board but are intact and two of them cracked but can be re-soldered. I have not tried to do any repair because I wanted you to see what happened and ask if you would rather do the repair yourself or have someone you know do it for you.
If you don't want the came I understand but if you do still want the game I am willing to refund you $100 from your purchase price because of what happened to compensate for the damage. If you don't want the game let me know and I will refund your payment.
Sincere apologies,
Mark

This is really bad news, I so much want Tempest. What to do? Mark mentiones that the tube is not damaged, but how does he know for sure? I asked him of course, but he obviously can't test the tube for presence of neckglow for instance. How big a chance is there that the neck is cracked? I need some advice on this because I told Mark that I will tell him my decision tomorrow. Fortunately he is honest about this. But it still sucks big deal.
:o :o :o :o :o :o >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Ask him if he heard any hissing sound when it happened. The tube is vacuum and WILL release a clear audible hiss when it breaks somewhere....
I'll fix the neck board for those 100 bucks ;););)
-
Will do.
here are some more pictures that I just received

Won't tell much of course.

Looks OK. Also if the board broke, then the force was downwards on it. The neck of the tube is most fragile for forces 90 degrees to the "axle" of the tube. A force from the rear side can be "handled" better than across the neck.
It _IS_ a crucial thing though. Pretty much impossible to find the right tube here...
-
His reply.
Erik,
I did not hear any hissing sound. I have never had a tube break so I don't know how loud or how long the hiss noise is but I did not hear anything like that when it happened. I don't have any monitor testing equipment so other than getting the monitor up and running I don't know of any other way to test the tube. I cleaned the dust off the neck and looked at it real close, I did not see any evidence of stress to the fitting at the end of the neck or the glass neck. The handle of the hand cart hit the right side of the board causing it to flex and crack, I'm guessing there is enough flex in the board and where it attaches to the tube that it didn't affect the tube but that is only my assumption.
Mark
Hm, difficult decision here. Let's go and sleep over it tonight. :-\
-
The seller did some extra visual and physical inspections on the neckglass and also some sound tests (you can hear it when there is a crack in a normal solid glass object) and the neck seems to be OK. I decided to still go for it. Besides, in worst case I can sell a lot of original Tempest parts, so with this total purchase price the financial risk will be almost zero to none. ;D
-
If there's only a small money risk I'd risk it. If you're lucky you purchased one of the most beautiful machines ever built. :)
-
He says he didnt hear a hiss so I'm pretty confident the tube is OK. You can't miss the sound AFAIK,although thankfully I never had to hear it........
-
Looks ok to me, and the neckboard looks like a easy repair.
if he can solder some bridges over the cracked parts, he can test it.
That neck looks very clean, and undamaged to me.
I think its ok, but yes, its a risk..
-
I take the risk. :)

I got word that the game is ready to be shipped to COW, to be stored until the container is ready for shipment. And it looks like the seller did a pretty good job on packing: foil, cardboard and again foil. Love it, little chance on additional damage.

Good move, Erik!

Thanks for the link. Etiènne, could you reproduce the sticker on the last picture? ;) No, don't do it, just kidding.

Yeah, congratulations Erik! :D

I actually can, and will, i like it ! :D
i would not use a paperclip (even my nickname is MacGyver) but thick solidcore cupper wire.
(instalatiedraad)
-
Yes I was about to post that too Etienne, IMHO paperclip are not the best conductors. I guess that Bob only uses them to guide the solder but I still would use solid-core copper wire.
-
you can easy strip it from its isolation, its thicker than a paperclip, its cupper so better conductivity, also its clean after stripping, so soldering is a breeze, and its much more easy to bend in shape of the tracks with needlenose pliers.
did i forget another avantage ? ;D :D
yes, i got meters of this stuff sitting in my shed after completely rewire-ing my house when we was renovating it.
oh and if you do need a thinner one, just take the black, thats thinner than the regular wire.
-
With all this info I am sure that fixing it will be a breeze, even for me. ;D Easiest US$ 100 made ever. ;D ;D
-
Thats for sure.
its at least more easy then desoldering a certain chip from a NES ;)

crap, there goes my business.......;);););)
