Actually I don't remember if I already posted these pics but it's just to understand which kind of job i'm beginning. Sometimes I'd like to change hobby... I don't know, collecting butterflys, stamps... condom testing...
-
too much work in one shot, so I decided to start from the top to the bottom.
Side arts are not in good condition, someone engraved on both sides W MILAN, F**K SOMEONE, I LIKE PUSSY, and some artist drawings of penis and something like that...
Cab obviously had been converted so I'm looking for PCBs...
-
Bookmarked ! , im going to follow this closely
Zacc Eyes is so cool !
-
Is it possible to have some pictures of inside the cab? Paul told me I mounted the Astro Wars PCB upside down so... I'd like to be more correct this time :)
-
Wow, this will be a lot of job, but you will soon have the only known upright Zaccaria Eyes with the bended marquee. :spaceace:
I might have a spare pcb for you, have to check if it is working.
-
wow fantastic!!
-
Are there documents somewhere? I dunno: schematics, user's manual....
-
Converted ? Yeah to a freaking henhouse next to a pool it looks !
You are one brave Man to restore this !!!
Love Eyes, great game and this cab looks 1000 times better than the US one.
I'll have my eyes on this restore, that's for sure !
-
Excelent cab!
Will follow this for sure.
You are one brave man!
-
I love the Bezel, that one is sick !
too bad they made it in a starsplash cabinet, if you look at the bezel and marquee, imagine how dedicated sidearts would be !
that would be totally awesome !
-
What a great cab!
Congrats!

What keeps you ? ;D ;D ;D

Noooooo, the US is nice an simple (all most clean) compared to the Zacc, too much happening...
Hehe, but hey, its great everyone dosent share the same opinion! ;)

Time ;D

Yeah, that's right ! You still have a Namco Galaxian bezel to scan ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
I want to preserve as much possible parts i can. Sometimes the temptation to repace a wooden part is strong but the force is with me
-
Yeah, that's right ! You still have a Namco Galaxian bezel to scan ;) ;) ;) ;)
i know...
its not walking away is it ? ;)
Anyway, thats another story, back to Eyes !

Totally no rush and just a kind request ;D ;D ;D

This is an AWESOME interpretation of Eyes. The Italians have a awesome sense for artwork. Really cool.
-
Exciting resto one more time!
Looking forward to follow this one
:spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Afaik, there is a dedicated sideart exists for Zacc Eyes, I think Paul's mini cab have that.
-
Hi guys, no documents at all about this cab?
-
All I can provide you are pictures of the PCB I had.
Not sure it's a big help though :-\

-
Found the pcb, it is an original Zaccaria, repaired by Irongiant, fully working. ;)
There is a small piece missing from the pcb, too bad that it is a piece from the ZZZ. :-\

About the manual, I have some original italian for the Universal Type, I think you can use a part of that.(the last few pages is for the Zelco games, Quasar and Astro Wars.)

I made some pics from my Phoenix cab's inside, I'm almost sure, that the Starsplash upright is exactly the same.(except for the edge connector pinout).

thank you, pictures are very precious!!

Does exist a CP overlay scan? My CP has been converted and has some holes...
-
Does exist a CP overlay scan? My CP has been converted and has some holes...
I only have the marquee scan from Paul, but it is the flat version for the mini cab.
-
I found that scan thank you but my marquee is in discrete condition... Ok, I'll proceed on my own.
this is the CP. I had to cut the rusted screws to remove the plexi.
Once I have the vector file I'll post it.
I think I haven't access to Etienne FTP any more so I can't upload the file directly there.
-
something is moving :)
-
I think I haven't access to Etienne FTP any more so I can't upload the file directly there.
correct, i have changed server recently but i will fix that soon for you ;)
PM me your desired username and password please, and i will take care of it
if you can, please scan the eye from the marquee, that looks much better quality than on that CP.
I have vector templates for the CP if you like.
man that artwork is cool !
-
I have vector templates for the CP if you like.
yes, I like :)
-
please pm me your email adress, then i can send you the login and stuff like that ;)
-
Wow, that is one rusting hulk to start off with. Does look reasonably complete, however.
Yes, it's in a Universal type cab - I have a light blue one of those that's the same design with the power supply mounted sideways. I should have the manual for it also if one hasn't been scanned for it yet (there are several types of Universal cabinet identified by a "type code"). Let me know and I can scan it for you. The only difference will be that the pinout of the edge connector will be for Eyes (Bela to confirm the native Zac Eyes board matches the US version, since he has a Zac one). The power supply IIRC is a 1B1126 as usual for that era.
If you need pictures from this style of cab (sideways power supply variant) I can get them for you. Also, if no one has scanned in a good CPO for Eyes yet (Bela, do you have one that you scanned?) I can scan mine. Just let me know what information you need (PM or email me).
Great find!
Paul.
-
Marco did scan it and uploaded it in my server, but a second "different" scan never hurts Paul ;)
Looks like i need to create a account here for you ? ::)
-
I have both Eyes pcbs (Zaccaria/Rockola), they share the same pinout, the only difference is that daughtercard at c6.
I will send an original manual to Marco from the universal type, no need to scan. ;)
About the cpo, I don't have the scan yet and I will also apply to a mini Zacc like yours, so a scan would be great, but only if it does not hurt the painting ony our plexi, I tried to remove a Scramble cpo a few years back and half of the paint remained on the wooden panel. :-\
-
Bela, the scan and cleaned up version are on my server ;)
-
Bela, the scan and cleaned up version are on my server ;)
I hope the scan and the cleaned up version are ok for you.
-
That is great, looks kickass. :D
I thought the full upright Eyes have the usual narrower cpo like Scramble, etc., but seems like this one is the same size as they used on the minis. ;)
-
OK, cool, sounds like you're all set for the CPO and manual. I have two manuals for two Universals in this type of cab:
* Z040 A/2 (28/1/82) that uses a CEC 158 power brick with built in back door interlock switch.
* Z040 B/0 (7/12/83) that uses a CEC 157 power brick without built in interlock switch.
The two cabinet wiring diagram schematics are laid out completely differently between the two so there maybe other differences in addition to the brick. I've seen two different control panel connectors used (that are incompatible). If the manual you have turns out to be a mismatch, I can scan the other one :)
Regards,
Paul.
-
Email send paul ;)
-
Thank you for your help. Once i finish to clean the wood i ll start with the electrical parts....
Do you have any picture of the cardboard? Just to understand which shape it has.
-
Likely plain black, I've made a repro one myself before:
http://www.zzzaccaria.com/MrDoRestoration.htm (http://www.zzzaccaria.com/MrDoRestoration.htm)
...scoot about half way down the page.
Paul.
-
I have the file for the Phoenix cardboard bezel, it is the same size, just ask the printshop to print it simply black. :D
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Z5XRQNUVxlA/UGXMm-2mN_I/AAAAAAAAGgA/b-ElU5usMyQ/w400-h646-no/Zacc+cardboard+bezel.JPG)
I think Etienne also have this file, you can download it from his server. ;)
-
The monitor cut-out is not square on this type of cab but curved so you'll need a craft knife and template. To be sure the artwork is the right size, I measured the old torn one out of my Universal-based Mr.Do!
As for my light blue star Universal, I forgot to take up my drill to pop the back door lock :| However, the coin door was open so I got some shots of the power areas:-

I did indeed do a replica on the cardboard bezel, but mine came out of a "mini" not the full upright.
are they the same ?
Found some time to measure the cardboard bezel..
Lets tape it to the table and try to straighten it as flat as possible.
Height: 91,5 cm.
width: 59,9 cm.
Center width monitor hole: 30 cm.
Center Height monitor hole: 39,4 cm.
Distance monitor hole from bottom: 3 cm.
And at last a vector PDF on scale..
http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/zaccbezel/cardboard.pdf (http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/zaccbezel/cardboard.pdf)
The monitor hole is a bit curved, and the difference between the center and the top / bottom opening untill the rounded corner is 1 cm.
The radius of the corners is 3 cm.
I hope this helps you to reproduce a cardboard bezel. ;)
EDIT:
I see you need a horizontal version... :-\
Perhaps Bela can provide me the measurements of the distance from the bottom of a horizontal version, then i can copy my PDF and adjust that to a horizontal version..
EDIT 2:
Horizontal version :

-
Wow thank you,
your pictures are very useful!!
here some other pics from my cab :)
-
CP repro ready. I'm not completely satisfied because yellow is not correct and blue is a little bit lighter.
Anyway it's a good start. or not...
-
Not that bad, just boost the colors a bit and its perfect ;)
-
This is AWESOME...you did a great job!! :)
-
mmm... once I have a salary again I'll print another one. I'm not convinced about the colors...
-
Hi Bela and Paul, which kind of monitor you have? The cardboard hole for the screen seems to be smaller than a 19" monitor...
Restoration is proceeding. I finished to clean and paint inside. Next step is the bottom. I want to repair broken rusted foot. It s better i do it now because the cab is empty and i can put ot upside down easily.
I dont know what to do with side arts. They are not in so good conditions and actually i don t know if someone did some repros. I know tjose sidearts were quite common in zac cabs.
-
Yeah, Arch did starsplash on a mini, but i think its the same a the full upright
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3487.msg50532#msg50532
where is that guy by the way ?
-
;)
-
Hi Vernimark,
it should be the typical Hantarex Monitor (20" or 19") like in all Zaccaria Cabs of this time.
sometimes they are called 20", sometimes 19", but they have all the same diagonal measures, depends just from the kind of measuring the complete tube or just the viewable area:-)
and they have all the typical Hantarex frame.
I can provide pictures if you need some.
If you need pictures of a clean inside starsplash (juts like new) I can provide some also.

I ll overlap a proto on a 19" crt.
I m thinking to use plastic and not paper for the cardboard
-
I ll overlap a proto on a 19" crt.
I m thinking to use plastic and not paper for the cardboard
Yeah, forget paper you can't bend it without cracks. ;)
-
... first steps
-
painting and assempbling parts...
it's the last time I use this method to restore rusted parts (remove most possible and use a pait transform rust in something more stable).
now I have a "gel" can dissolve rust at all. I used it (for testing) on screws and they seems to be new!!
-
Just......WOW !!!
What is this gel you speak of sir ??
-
this is the gel I was talking about
-
PS...
in this case I used that gel
-
rusted fan...
looking for a new one or try to repair it???
-
...second option of course.
I decided to take a closer wire mesh for a security issue
but... does it work??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZoYjvnIt-0
-
That looks awesome !
i would only not use it, sometimes it causes a whobbely image..
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2706.30
-
yea, I think to put it inside leaving it disconnected
-
I think you could power a model plane with it, or use it to chop vegetables ! ;D
-
It looks great!
-
If I knew that the restoration would have been so long and complicated I would not have ever bought that cab. Never. Definitely.
-
If I knew that the restoration would have been so long and complicated I would not have ever bought that cab. Never. Definitely.
Just take it one step at the time, you will get there. I'm still happy I did my very rusty, mice peed resto of the Space Invader.... In the end it is worth it ;)
-
If I knew that the restoration would have been so long and complicated I would not have ever bought that cab. Never. Definitely.
Wowowow....keep going Marco !! This is an EYES, one of the coolest "unknown" games you could own.....and a Zaccaria version is even cooler with those eyesssssssss...... :):):):)
-
that is one hell  of a filthy cabinet, don't know if i would have tackled that! but your work and dedication amazes me, keep going!!!
-
Ok ok don t worry i ll not fire it ;D
Do you know width and length of the metal plate behind the pcb?
-
I have one in my CK, but its not in my house so i cannot take measurements for you :'(
did you receive my pm ?
-
Yep. I thought i updated that file already. If not i can do that tomorrow
-
now I can say I start to be satisfied....
I've still a lot of things to do but now I can appreciate first results...
just a before-after comparation...
-
ok, now it's turn of the cabinet bottom. it is very damaged so... actually I don't know how to proceed...
having a look I could see I could remove the damaged part removing 8 screws.
after that I prepared the lower surface
-
too damaged... I decided to remake it...
so, some mesurements and directly to Leroy Merlin to buy new wood and asking to cut it in the right way.
then some glue and holes building the corners with the thread inside in order to screw the feet
-
but... what the hell! the new part is BIGGER!!!
Leroy Merlin guy read 58 instead of 53!!!
and, stupid me, I didn't check before assempling everything....
-
fortunately I could disassemble it and cut 5cm...
and that's all...
-
Seems like you take this resto really seriously, well done. :D
I never touch the bottom of my cabs, just removing spider webs. ;D
-
the problem is the wood. some parts seem to be in cork wood. probably years of humidity. so if you push a little bit with your finger you can pass through the wood. I'm trying to change all parts damaged or to use substances can fix surfaces...
-
Atleast the full upright have this part, the mini unfortunately does not have it and thus many times the bottom of the mini is victim of moist >:(
-
Nice repro base :)
-
thank you
-
Nice repro base :)
+1 Nice job Marco!!! :spaceace:
-
This is a photo of my repair logbook. I hope can be useful for someone.
-
You should scan that, i would like to add it to the zaccaria documentation on my NAS
Also i think that paul swan might like it to add to his zzzaccaria.com site ;)
-
awesome sketches!! :)
-
that is so damn cool!!! do you keep a repair log book of everything you're doing? would be interesting to see some more pages ... great idea by the way! i catch myself thinking about the same stuff over and over again simply because i forgot how i did it the first time around :-[
-
yes, the main reason of my logbook is to capitalize my experiences and after 50... 60... 70 pages is a sort of arcade auto-biografy ;)
so... next step, metal label.
it was seriously damaged and removing it I made the situation worse.
this is what i did. not perfect but acceptable for me...
-
Removing the flyer I damaged the bezel..
the scotch tape used to fix the instruction flyer damaged the graphics below.
Alberto, my graphic designer, re designed the missing part, then I printed it with different gamma corrections in order to understand which combination of colors to use,
then I printed the mirrored selected part on transparent adesive film.
also in this case the result is not perfect but I prefer to have an original glass with a "patch" instead of a repro...
-
You do know i replicate them on aluminium from time to time, and that i am going to start another run in the near future ?
-
yes, I have one of those labels. I prefer original where possibile but ptobably I'll use the repro for my space wars...
do you know any coding rules for serial numbers?
-
flyer...
the instruction flyer was in very bad conditions so I decided to reprint it...
here you can see the final result: flyer and "patch"
camera flash amplify the "defect" of the patch. to say the truth with normal light the patch is not so evident...
-
yes, I have one of those labels. I prefer original where possibile but ptobably I'll use the repro for my space wars...
do you know any coding rules for serial numbers?
not really, but i think since the numbers have a dot in them , that maybe the first 3 is the machine code and the last the serial ?
thinking about that, it does not make sence, because that would mean that there are no more that 999 per model
i dont have a clue though..
-
By the way, can you scan that bezel ?
Its F#cking awesome !
-
I'll try... :)
Coin box....
really in bad shape, very rusted. I dat to remove all the rust by hand, with the help of my dremel and chemical substances.....
-
coin box final result 2/2
-
i think i've said it before, but it can't hurt to repeat myself: that thing is NASTY and you're doing a great job bringing it back to something "displayable".
btw, congratulations on having your own personal private graphic designer! :D
-
hehe he is not my private graphic designer, I just bore the graphic designer of my company :)
-
Nice, I'm really happy that you kept the cab as original as possible. :spaceace:
-
I just bore the graphic designer of my company :)
you BORE him? ;D
-
I just bore the graphic designer of my company :)
you BORE him? ;D
in sense of annoying
-
ok, it's coin door's turn...
I mixed parts from the original coin door and another one I had (not completed). sorry I forgot to take front pictures
-
this time I don't want to annoy you with the nth coin door restoration so here you can see the result only :)
-
ok, it was the first time I did something like that and I have to say I'm not satisfied, anyway the result is better than the original status: I hope the next time to do better.
the front of the cabinet was very damaged so I decided to remake it. first of all I cleaned it and I could see conditions were very critical. FIrst of all I sanded all the surface and I tryed to paint a primer on the top but the result was rather lousy...
-
so I decided to cover the surface with 3mm plywood. then I used a primer in order to have a very smooth surface
-
then I spent a couple of hours into leroy merlin on order to convince the guy to produce a color very similar to the dark brown. once I had enough paint I made some tests on the CP and I had to add some black. the color now I can see is not exactly the same but it is similar enough.
as you can see the tob is not too bad but the lower part had some problems, probably too much dust flying in the garage while I was painting that part... I don't know...
-
this is the final result
-
It does not look too bad, maybe just sand very little and do a extra coat to the bottom
i would really like to know the colorcode of the brown, it seems a B#tch to find the correct mix >:(
Ully tried to color scan it for me at thorsten, but the paint was too shiny to even get a reading on the machine
it almost looks like there is some kind of clear coat over it.
i have the feeling its "parketlak" as we call it in dutch. (glitsa is the label)
parquet lacquer is what google translate comes with when i do dutch-english
(http://www.heritageflooringuk.com/portfolio/restorations/Battersea-Oak-Parquet-Restoration-Lacquered/Battersea-Oak-Parquet-Restoration-Lacquered-01.jpg)
one big profit of Glitsa is that its hard as hell when dry so it will prevent future damage.. 8)
-
I think you're right, there is certainly a glossy top coat over the entire cabinet, I'm sure when I've had paint chips in my Zac cabs you can see the extra layer over the paint.
-
yes, I confirm the cabinet has a glossy top coat.
I an tell you the color code but I corrected it with black and red by hand using a spoon so actually I don't know how many black and red to use to correct the original color...
-
I think its " Chocolate Brown TM" ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
There is something funny about their paint. I have never took a good look at it but it has a glossy finish but I also got the feeling that they mix brow with clear and some black to get these semi solid brow black tone.
-
Guys....it's shit color.
;D
-
I absolutely agree
-
Yup, shit for sure :P
-
so... it is joystick turn...
-
usual treatment....
-
ok guys, let me introduce my new zac joy...
-
Nice resurrection, working Zacc joysticks are quite rare these days. ;)
-
Wow !, what a little cleaning can do uh !
Nice work :spaceace:
-
It's easy with these new "special effects" paintings...
In fact after reoving all rust I painted the metal part. washers springs screws and other small parts are new
-
this is the end... beautiful friend
-
love it :-*
-
Comparing the result with the original pic, you did a great job. :D

This artwork rocks, I love it. :spaceace:
-
This is amazing work - very very impressed.
-
Yeah, very, very well. Done.
-
I really like these cabs!
It looks fantastic! You made a very good Job!
-
for a zaccaria, it looks surprisingly good. i really dig the bezel - damn scary!!!
