Following this roadtrip

...I've to quickly restore this cabinet ! Why ??? Because it is situated in a corridor, in my house  It's temporary of course, but the Nuno's lair v2 is not finished yet, and no more place in other rooms so...  the renovation will be done here  :P
Ok, let's quickly examine the cab.
It has been transformed to play Taito's Arkanoid :
Fortunately, the transformations are reversible, the control panel has not been damaged to plug the spinner ...
...but it'll have some work do on the panel : overlay very dirt and damaged, rust to remove , ... :?
It's not visible on these pictures, but the monitor has a lot of screen burns :?
Good new : both side art are in good condition :)
The vinyl on the top is :ghost: dead :ghost:
The identity of the game :

Next step, the entrails of the beast 8)

Oh, one of my all time favourites! This will be a must-have in the future. I'm going to a warehouse full of arcades in couple of days. Maybe there will be some dedicated stuff there.

Let me know if there are some cabs left... I would like to do my first 'Sweden roadtrip' ::) :P ;D
OK, back on this cab 8)
Time to check the inside of the cab'
...a lot of dust :? ...
...usual... but still impressive ... check out the power supply ... still up & running :spaceace:
The audio regulator... not used anymore since this cab has been modified for Arkanoid :
An old Kinder chocolate egg :-* I love chocolate but this one should have more than 10 years old so ... no ... thanks  :ghost:
The board : an Arkanoid boot...
and the original harness, completely modified for playing Arkanoid and its famous spinner  :
-
Back on this ... (shame on me... one month later )
Because the original Time Pilot harness has been modified for Arkanoid, I won't use it for this project. So I remove it :
A lot of dust... everywhere  ...
...but I want to clean everything. Let's see what's behind the marquee : the mono speaker, the neon ...
Bugs :?
Closer ... disgusting ! Hopefully there are all dead :-X
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/tpcl5.jpg)
OK I remove everything... now it's clean here
Behind the bezel in cardboad, the monitor...
... badly 'Arkanoid screen burned' as you can see :-\
OK, let's remove it... I'll replace it of course :P
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/tpcl9.jpg)
I remove the power supply protection box... spider on his web, and what a nice monkey toy ;D
Maybe I should keep it as the keyring for this cab ::) ;D
Ok so without all these parts in the cab, it'll be more easy to clean inside...
Better isn't it ?

Another great restoration and another great GAME !!!!
I will follow this project with interest
:spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Back on this ;)
OK, because I don't have the Time Pilot board, and because I need some reliable, I'll emulate the game with advance mame dos and use a RGB TV.
I got many question regarding the hardware used for my different Advance Mame setups, I'll show you what I'm using exactly on this one :-*
* Pimp my Cab' *
OK, for this project I'll use this AGP graphic card :
...and this sound card :
No more hard drive disk in a cab... here's something more reliable 8)
Few minutes later (I'm using the same cable VGA -> COMMODORE monitor)... the result on my Commodore monitor (full RGB) ... just perfect :-* :
Of course,I won't use that monitor for the cab ;D I'll use a second hand TV (thanks to my colleague Remy for selling it to me ;D)
Here's the TV model :
Because I don't have here a 'naked' DB 15 connector, I'll hack a VGA cable, like the god old time :D
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/pc6.jpg)
The result is 100% arcade accurate (60hz/RGB) :-* :-* :-*
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/pc7.jpg)
-
No more hard drive disk in a cab... here's something more reliable 8)
Hey this is great!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)
Where I can buy this card? How It work under dos? Is seen as a normal hard disk?
Thanks Nuno..
-
It's everywhere on eBay, and works like a normal hard drive, also in DOS.
Do a search for "ide cf" on eBay. :)
-
OK, it's time the for the monitor<>TV switch.
Here's the old monitor to replace :
...and the TV I'll use. Let's disassemble it...
Ouch ... more dust than the original monitor
The best way to clean it... an air compressor gun
Far better now :
OK, so I'm using the original frame to put the TV... it fits perfectly :)
The chassis board can not touch the metal monitor frame ! I'm using a tiny piece/sheet of wood between them, like this :
Of course, I've to fix that sheet of wood... let's find on the chassis board an existing hole, and put a screw, like this
I need at least TWO screws... but no more hole. Let's drill a new hole ...without damaging anything of course :P
As you can see, the chassis board won't touch the metal now :
Let's check if I've done a good job ::) ?
It's fine :-*
:-*
-
As a total noob to all such things.. What would happen if the chassis board touched the metal? Would it destroy the monitor, or would you get electrocuted?
-
As a total noob to all such things.. What would happen if the chassis board touched the metal? Would it destroy the monitor, or would you get electrocuted?
If the chassis board touches the metal, all the electricity inside the tube / high voltage can go everywhere on the board, depending the way the board / metal chassis are together :ghost:...and of course it can destroy the board. It can even hurt you (a strong discharge), if you're touching the metal at the same time :ghost: :ghost: :ghost:
-
OK, let's fix all the marquee area now 8)
First, I put a brand new neon
Now, let's examine the marquee ...
from the back... except dust, it's ok...
...but from the top ... ouch... ... the black vinyl is damaged :ghost:
OK, first I remove the top metal plate ...
...in order to be able to remove all the vinyl :
By chance, I still have very small pieces of NOS Atari back vinyl (Same than Dragon's Lair cab). I finally found a project where I can use it ;) :
I cut it, like this... very slowly and very carefully :
And this is it
Now it's like new :-* :-* :-*
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/marq10.jpg)
-
Now, let's check the control panel :
The good think : it's all original ... except the spinner of course ;D ... let's remove everything :
The bad things :-\ The overlay is damaged on the front edge :ghost:
The overlay colors are faded
...and the upper part of the panel are full of rust !
Ok, let's try to get back the original colors of the overlay with this magic sponge :
Hey, it works fine... see
-
Looking good Bruno!
Are you going to try to find a replacement control panel overlay?
Alex
-
I think mamemarquees does repros of this cpo. The artwork file also avaiable on localarcade http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=503&mode=search (http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=503&mode=search)
-
Thanks for the link JamesSS :-*
Are you going to try to find a replacement control panel overlay?
Well, I don't think so. I'll try to get the original overlay as good as I can :P Maybe later I'll apply a repro, but I would like to finish all the cab first ;)
-
Ok, so I'll finish the control panel overlay cleaning later, because I would like to start removing the rust first...
The tools of the day : my usual rust remover
I'm applying it only on that part
Take the opportunity to use the 'rust remover' bath for other parts... by example these screws  :
...now in the 'bath' ;D
24 hours l8ter :
Let's use sandpaper to remove all the paint :
It's enough like that :-*
(https://www.dragonslairfans.com/timepilot/revdustp8.jpg)
The screws after "the bath' :
I want to keep the original overlay, so I need to protect it before painting the previous area.
...like this :
As usual... Primer first :
Done...
Two layers of black later ( 2 x 24 hours later by the way ;) )
It looks like new :-* Ok, now I can start to clean the overlay...
-
I have never tried it myself but someone once recommended using toothpaste to cleanup and restore control panel overlays.
-
I have never tried it myself but someone once recommended using toothpaste to cleanup and restore control panel overlays.
I know some guys uses toothpaste for cleaning the white Japanese cabinets (Astro, Naomi,...), so why not trying that on an overlay :) Thanks for the tip, I'll try it on the next one :-*
-
Youre pretty good at this...... :)
-
Back to the overlay cleaning.
As you can see, it's very dirty

Done :

I love this magic sponge :-*
-
That control panel still looks great!!! I'll bet you'll be able to cover those minor imperfections easily!!! ;D Looking Great!!!
-
Today... easy job : Let's make these original screws looks like new :P First, let's sand them :
The tools of the day :
Primer
(I love these 'mushrooms pictures' :P)
And the final color (not dry yet as you can see) :
:P

Very nice work so far. I'm a big fan of Time Pilot, but I had never seen the Atari version before.

Thanks Spyridon... and welcome here by the way :)
Yes, the Atari version is very uncommon. This one was releasd only for the European market, but maybe there are others specific versions for other European country ? The only other version I know is the US version by Centuri :

For LD and CD ? I'm gonna try this, thanks Any :-*
OK, time to clean up the original buttons.
Let's disassemble everything...
The bath (water + strong soap) for all plastic stuff
Better now :-*
Bye bye the Arkanoid spinner... I'm looking for a leaf joystick.... but until I get one, I'll use this brand new joystick :
...now fixed on the panel :
Love it :)
Panel is now ready :)
-
wahooo, it's taking shape.
love it
-
:-*
Today, let's fix the controls.
Remember, when I got that cab, the panel was hacked for a spinner in order to play Arkanoid. So I have to put back the correct wires of a 8 ways joystick.
Tools of the day :
Done :
IPAC, the best encoder (no, I'm not working for Ultimarc ;D).
I can't wait...I've to test (did I say play ?) ...
Working fine :) I love Time Pilot :-*

ooooh where can i snag myself one of those?
Ebay US, but via a Japanese seller :P
OK, back on work 8)
The bezel was originally stapled, but because of the time/humidity, the staples don't fix the bezel anymore.
Let's clean it first :
I'll use double side scotch to fix it
Done :
The time has also damaged the bezel itself, the black color is gone at some places
I just covert it like this :
Let's clean the top...
It looks better now

Almost finished :-*

The coin doord are full of rust
Let's remove them :
'Remove rust' bath :
I'm removing the paint with a drill first...

-
Another gem of the good old days gone!!!!!!!!! :-* :-* :-*
Great restoration Bruno :-* :-*
-
Thanks my friends :-*
And here's the last step : washing the sides ;D It's usually the first thing to do... but not this time :P ;)
Let's start from this point
Do you think it looks nice ? Check out closer on the base of the first side by example :-X
or area like this
OK, OK ... nothing dramatic... but it can be removed with THE magic sponge 8)
A general wash first on the thick vinyl, and I'm using the magic sponge for specific areas :
Looks better isn't it
Now, same work for the other side :
AND THIS IS IT ... THE END :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
Here's the final pictures :-*

Did you notice by the way ? All this restoration has been done ...inside the corridor of my house  ;D Thanks to Darth Nunette for let me do that (I promise her it's the first ...and the last time I do that  ;) :-* )
Now, enjoy this video if you want to see that 'beast' in action :)

It's so beautiful...! I want to restore a cabinet myself, but in the end, I'm probably going to just convert it into a MAME cabinet...that accepts coins to play.
