Title: What is a good Scanner for restoring...?
Post by: Biomech011 on June 19, 2012, 01:16:16 PM
Greetings everyone,

I am new here to Dragons lair Fans, and I am as well an artist like you all.
I wanted to know if you would all help me in finding a good scanner for restoration?

I have tons of art that I would like to restore and share with my fellow artists....

Anyone have a good brand or type which is best for the job? For marquees and Side art.

Any help would be great.

Etienne,
I have arrived.

Here's a sample of art that I'll need to scan:

How does it perform for you? looks pretty big. also, what's the scanning window size?

Its a A4 / letter size scanner

I like it very much, i did scan some sidearts with it, and i am very satisfied with the results:

I know "Transparant HP" is the weapon of choice for doing side art but for such a lot of marquees maybe an A3 size scanner would be handier ?

No idea what these cost though...

Thanks for the info Level42. I'll look into it.

I'm just trying to find the best one for the job to do this right.

Looks like I may need two types of scanners.

Again, Thank you everyone for the input. You all are helping a lot.

A good camera with a macro-lens. Nikon D800 with 60mm micro comes to mind....

But you will need lens correction software to make it correct....right ?

Yeah, You don't want to use a camera.
I do photography professionally on the side. You will get lens curve and some unwanted light. its not really worth it.
So far I've been researching 11"x17" (279.4mm x 431.8mm) flat bed scanners.

we'll see. still researching.

Again, Thank you all for the input.

Nikon kills all lens curvature and light fall-off in camera. BTW, the macro ones are mostly distortion free and fall-off free from 1m->infinity as they have not very large apertures and are easier to construct perfectly.

So the Hp 4670 seems to be a little on the scarce side.  Have any of you guys got experience with the Canon LiDE 700F Flatbed A4 Scanner ?  It seems to be to closest currently available, and it has a 180 degree lid but is it capable of operating upside down so to speak ?

the problem with almost all scanners is that there is a ledge at the edges:

That way it will not be straight to the glass and may give unsatisfying results..

Ully's scanning of the Rally CP is an excellent example of what i mean :

I think I will take a gamble with it and see how it performs.  Its selling point to me is the 180 degree angle the cover opens through, specifically designed for scanning oversized images.

Well, I never got round to purchasing the scanner in the above post, but I did pick up This Baby on Ebay for 99p = delivery. Says all it needs is an adaptor, so fingers crossed.

Yes the 4670 is the only scanner that I came across that will sit flat on oversize items. I have tried a few, but happy that I found a 4670 to buy, I am sure you will agree once you try it out.
