Almost two months ago, a guy put up a post on a german arcade forum that he had been given two nintendo cabinets from a friend for free. they had been sitting in a basement since 1989 - untouched! at first everyone thought he was probably talking about some generic cabs with bootleg boards inside, but when he posted pictures of the beauties everyone was in awe . he wanted to keep one of them for himself because his wife is a huge nintendo fan, the other one, an extremely rare nintendo space firebird, he wanted to trade for a generic mame cab. mr punkrockcaveman himself came to the rescue and offered him one of his hellomats in exchange, at first everything seemed to work out fine, but somehow this deal never happened!
fast forward a few weeks, the same guy posted on the german forum again that he was planning on converting the space firebird into a mame cab :o. WHAT? as you can imagine, the reactions "of the crowd" weren't positive (to say the least), so i contacted him and asked if there's anything i could do for him ;). he still wanted to have a mame cab and - of course - as soon as possible. so i thought about the stuff in my storage but couldn't really come up with anything good except for an empty taito cab which he could have used as a shell. however, before i made my offer, i wanted to make sure not to go behind joerg's (aka punkrockcaveman aka prc) back who had the initial deal with the nintendo guy. joerg told me that he was no longer interested in the cab, but offered me a deal of his own instead - a deal which i couldn't pass on and which eventually led to my latest roadtrip. so lean back, ejoy, here's what's coming up
although i'm on holidays, i have to start pretty early, because i won't be travelling light.
first order of business: two pallets - transported my superpowerully 8)
why two pallets? well, because i will be transporting two cabs up north. ok, make that 1 1/2, because the first one is merely a shell: an out run cab which an arcade guy from bremen wants to use as his first mame project!
let's load it up
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5316/6927227418_8b30970486_b_d.jpg)
because the weather forecast is predicting scattered showers, i have to project the cab on the trailer!
as for the second cab i'm bringing, have a look inside my alien-infested rear view mirror
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/6927227532_6545929122_b_d.jpg)
have you been able to guess correctly? right, it's my german amidar cab which will be traded in for something else ...
time to set my navigation device: 3.45h is the estimate without a trailer, so make that estimate an hour longer!
breakfast on the road - i love it :-*
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7117/6927227110_ab9abfa8f4_b_d.jpg)
looks like it has already rained here, so far clear sunny skies
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5330/7073307887_4ced8aa7ed_b_d.jpg)
while taking a short break, i spot this nice still life on a picnic area: looks like someone's got his lights knocked out and he lost his reigning champion crown!
i also spot this albert einstein crown cap :P
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7122/6927228104_00343fd914_b_d.jpg)
the last forty kilometers take me through some beautiful scenery
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7073308219_41de810f81_b_d.jpg)
my first stop is coming closer and closer (check out the sign on the right), but as you can see the weather is getting worse!
someone's already waiting for me at mcdonald's - and although he's in disguise (normally he's wearing a hat which he has exchanged for a cap this time) i quickly recognize him!
have you been successful in unmasking him? no? NO??? c'mon, that's obvious, it's the famous HAMBURGLAR!!!
need proof? here you go
ok, after successfully protecting my big tasty bacon burger from the hamburglar aka joerg, let's complete our mission before it starts raining heavily! and this takes me back to the initial deal joerg had offered me - a "triangle deal" (sounds strange in english): he would prepare a hellomat mame cab for me in exchange for my amidar cab which would then allow me to trade the hellomat in for the nintendo space firebird! make sense?
man, that hellomat is really small!
time to let others do the work ... ;)
with the hellomat now loaded in the back of my car and a huge THANK YOU to joerg for making this possible, i can head out to the nearby location of the nintendo guy
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7277/7073308405_a2cf5bc5c7_b_d.jpg)
in the meantime it had started pouring down and some poor guy almost got hit by a train :o
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7062/6927228740_dbd097a0f3_b_d.jpg)
here i finally am!!!
"nintendo house" located
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5032/7073310187_019e4f2774_b_d.jpg)
the object of my affection (on the left ;D): an uber rare nintendo space firebird. on the right, the guy named micha who kindly agreed to exchange this cab for a hellomat mame cab (nice shoes by the way ;))
fortunately, the rain has stopped again, so we can "download" the out run cab (which will be picked up shortly by the bremen guy) and "upload" the space firebird - with maximum protection from the rain!
but wait a minute, this roadtrip is entitled ninten-two and you were talking about two nintendo cabs that micha got out of the basement, so we wanna see the second one as well!!! ok, ok, i give in
holy ravioli - a dedicated donkey kong :o :o :o
since i had made contact with micha i had been pestering him about the donkey kong: some gentle remarks first ("what a great looking cab, would look perfect in my collection"), some more obvious lines later ("i already have donkey kong junior and donkey kong 3, this is my missing donkey kong puzzle piece"). but it didn't look as if he could be convinced to let go of it, when suddenly out of the blue he dropped me a pm entitled "congratulations". in it, he basically said that he had talked to his wife and they had both agreed to sell it to me. of course, it didn't come cheap (as you can imagine), but i had to get it - had to had to had to!!! so let's push this baby a little bit closer to the edge ...
... and down into my car (backdoor is present, just not pictured)!

OH - MY - GOD!!!

the arcade gods are shining down on me ...
... so let's get out those sunglasses! 8)

or not >:(
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5347/7073310921_9c8dca99b7_b_d.jpg)
basically it's raining all the way back to lauda (good thing that i gave maximum protection to the space firebird), so i'm following the sign's advice by taking my time
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5151/6927231174_9e9f5a8739_b_d.jpg)
a mere 25 kilometers from home, the sun's coming out again ...

the statistics - coindidentally the travelled mileage also represents something else this time - wanna make a guess?

one country, four counties, 750 kilometers, 12 hours 42 minutes on the road - this roadtrip is OFFICIALLY OVER! ("geschafft" means done / completed / finished)

stay tuned for the unloading of the cab(s) ...

Cool roadtrip report! Thanks for sharing, Ully. And congrats with the new aquisitions! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:

this morning, the trailer was still waiting for me with a late birthday present underneath

metal identification plaque - i would really like to know more about the story of that cab!
here's what i need now:
- space firebird marquee (from nintendo, not the sega / gremlin version)
- sideart (although i've been told that this might not exist at all. although it is pictured on the flyer, noone seems to have seen it yet)
- 2-way joystick (is it the mario bros type?)
- new instruction stickers
- space firebird pcb (is there a difference between the rare upright and the common cocktail table?)
- nintendo space firebird manual (looking for the upright version)
final shot: my new space firebird next to my old german donkey kong machine. it will be leaving The Storage™ shortly, now that i finally have my dedicated donkey kong cabinet!
time to quote myself from september 20, 2009: "i've given up hope to have a full american-style nintendo row (...) because those cabinets are almost impossible to come by in germany (and even in europe) and when you're lucky to score one, they usually cost tons of money. it IS possible to get one (as andré and bruno have proven) or you could scr3een one yourself , but a full row ..."
flash forward 2 1/2 years later, here i am: 6 nintendo cabinets under my belt - hell ya
i haven't unloaded the nintendo donkey kong yet because my plan is to drop it off at my restoration outpost (aka my mum's place :D) along with jr and 3 to work on those nintendo cabs simultaneously - this is going to be an amazing sight!!! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
In one word WOW :o

I have no word :o 8) :spaceace:

I can't wait !!!
-
WOW!!!! Congrats Ully! This is a top score. I'm really really glad that you got those two cabs. I had already given up hope that the SF could be saved. You made my day! :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
Can't wait to see your fully restored Nintendo Row!
-
Holy .... congratulations! A dedicated DK! You must be soooooo happy!!!! What a beauty!!!!!
-
Very nice ! :spaceace:
I dont know if you can find original instruction stickers, but if you want repro's, scan them and you know where to find me ;)
-
You lucky bastard! :spaceace:
Where did the seller find these?
-
Der Duke! :o ;D
Ahm, I have some Space Firebirds PCB thingys lying around...
-
Congrats!! It's good that the SF goes to you ... I wouldn't have managed to restore it that good anyway ;) and also very nice to see the DK in good company with his brothers! If the ENV DK isnt promised yet, drop me a note, I'm ready for another crazy deal ;)
-
you win!!
amazing roadtrip. I like the red color of the cab. You are one lucky guy :spaceace: :spaceace: :spaceace:
-
Great to see the deal came through Ully!
Great great cabs!!!
-
Great story you lucky ba...rd, I guess most of us would trade a mame cab for some original Nintendo stuff. ;)
-
What a great find, it was certainly worth the wait to get them!
-
Great story you lucky ba...rd, I guess most of us would trade a mame cab for some original Nintendo stuff.
probably yes, but i couldn't have done it without joerg's help, because i have no idea how to set up a mame cab. joerg told me yesterday that although space firebird IS rare, he's just no fan of the game, so he'd rather have a game he likes (that is: amidar) than a rare game that he doesn't like that much. makes sense and somehow i agree, but of course having space firebird in my nintendo row simply makes my day! :)
-
Where did the seller find these?
a friend bought them back in 1989 for 250 german marks for the dk (around 120 euros) and 100 marks for the space firebird (with roc'n ropes installed). both of them were fully working back then, but when he moved the games into his cellar, donkey kong stopped working and so he closed the doors behind those cabs for more than 20 years. a few months ago, he thought of those games again and micha came to his mind. before bringing them to the dumpster, he asked micha if he wanted to have them for free - well, do i have to say "no-brainer"? so they transported the cabs over to micha's house into his living room (the picture with his kid playing donkey kong was taken there) where he inspected the DK and realized that one of the fuses on the power supply was blown. so he grabbed a spare one from the space firebird, put it in and voila - donkey kong was back in the game! :)
the game does have a slight horizontal hold problem: when you turn on the game, it "slides" from left to right, adjusting the potentiometer on the chassis fixes that. however, when you turn the game off and on again, it's the same problem all over again. any ideas on this?
-
here's a picture of the arcade flyer's front
unfortunately, neither its art nor its logo have anything to do with the actual sideart which was supposed to be on the cab (and i'm afraid that this picture is just not good enough - even for our vector king)
here's the only straight-on photo of the marquee i could find
@etienne: do you think it would be possible to make a vector out of that? i know it wouldn't be accurate (perhaps 90%), but i'd rather have a rough marquee than one which says TV ;)
however, since the space firebird restoration will have to wait a little while longer, i'll try to come up with an original marquee (and sideart) first before putting another heavy workload on you. when the time has come and i haven't been successful yet, i might have to ask you for help!
-
Klov says there´s 8 members with a Space Firebird, perhaps contacting them for a scan would be the way to go??
-
Great story Ully!
Woow! The Nintendo Space Firebird is THE prize! I love the shape of that one! I remember having seen one like that one (with that shape) on a black & white picture, but the game was Radar Scope. Anayway, this is a very rare one, never see it for real! Congratulation :P
Hehe, I see know why you reacted about this post (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2282.msg48905#msg48905) ;D!
Of course, you had to had to had that blue DK! What a collection now! 8)

Congrats on the great catch Ully! :) Simply awesome cabs.

By the way....
I bet this famous song from a famous Nintendo game played in your head when you got the cabs.

Great Cab with a great Game!
Congrats

sometimes the answer to your problem is staring you right in the face

i've been asking you guys what you would do with a spare nintendo cabinet (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3511.0) and eventually decided to use my mario bros conversion cab as a shell for popeye. this leaves me with some spare parts and guess what's mounted on the control panel: 2-way joysticks, the perfect candidate(s) for my nintendo space firebird :)!
i also found new instruction stickers and a new instruction card on ebay - wonderful!
let's mark those items off the list and see what else i still need:
- space firebird marquee (perhaps the vector king can work his magic here?)
- a set of sideart
- 2-way joystick
- new instruction stickers
- space firebird pcb
- nintendo space firebird manual (looking for the upright version)
-
the vector king will do his best ;)
Do you have measurements for me ?
-

Do you have measurements for me ?
not yet! the marquee that's installed is slightly narrower than the actual cab, but i guess with the correct height and the marquee file you have you should / might be able to calculate the missing width. i'll have to go to the storage tomorrow anyway, so i'll get you what you need!
-
Just measure between the two side panels, it would be a dissapointment if the calculation is off based on the crappy pic, and ending up with a marquee that does not fit ! ;D
Maybe muerto's idea is not so bad, i mean it is doable, but not as accurate as i would like it to be..
Will you contact the klov-ers, or should i start pm-ing ? :P
Perhaps it will be nice to also check the "visible area" ?
I mean like this :
(pic is comming.. ;D)
EDIT:
Here is the pic.. you get my point i guess ?
I assume "C" is the same ?
-
Nice story Ully, and a great catch. You're a lucky man.
One day, you will find your place to display al your games, and boy, what a sight that will be. It will be like a German Lair, or something. :)
-

someone from KLOV measured his helifire marquee for me (which uses the same cabinet), dimensions are as follows: 56,8 x 14,8 cm. does that fit the measures of the crappy marquee picture?
Maybe muerto's idea is not so bad, i mean it is doable, but not as accurate as i would like it to be..
Will you contact the klov-ers, or should i start pm-ing ? :P
i've already contacted those in question, got two (out of four) replies so far: one person has the cocktail table (but didn't list it as such on klov), the other one has the sega / gremlin cabinet. so far, no luck! :(
-
Not exactly, its 14,2 in height after stretching it to the width you provided..
So you see its always a good thing to measure physically :P
that part can ofcourse be covered by the marquee retainers..
Anyway, i see i am up to some serious resolution boosting to do the job ..
-
WOW ULLY! :o :o
Late but sincere congratulations, buddy!!
Good thing you caught that MDonkey in your nets while you were there, I definitely need one of these blue guys too.
-
Not exactly, its 14,2 in height after stretching it to the width you provided..
hmmm, i've just measured the generic TV marquee that came with my game and the height is 15,5 cm (width 56,0 cm, but i've already said it's too narrow). strange!
-
Dont worry, just provide the measurements from this post :
https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=3523.msg49161#msg49161
-
Done some boosting with photoshop, and made a start..
-
really cool, etienne! will get you those measures asap
-
So, jetzt ist mein Neid etwas abgeklungen und ich kann auch was posten ;)
You lucky b*****d. Congratulations!! Unbelievable!! let's see a pic with all your Nintendos in a row, please :)
-
Holy craps, a Space Firebird!!! And a really beautiful Donkey! Both in the same roadtrip, I guess you could feel your heart beating as you were approching the seller's house!
-
thx for all the nice comments, guys, even almost one week after the roadtrip i'm still dancing around in joy because of the nice catch. can't wait to have them all together and give them the superully treatment they deserve! :)
-
Ully,
Look on Yahoo Japan auctions, I wouldn't be surprised if an original marquee turns up
-
Ully, awesome, congratulations! Nice Catch :)
-
Ully,
Look on Yahoo Japan auctions, I wouldn't be surprised if an original marquee turns up
If you plan on doing so, a friend of mine has conducted a guide on how to shop on yahoo.jp. It is about Japanese Home Computers, but he tells a lot about proxy bidders and how it has to be shipped, etc. The procedure is the same for arcade stuff :) It's in german an can be found here: http://www.nexgam.de/import-guides/Games-von-Yahoo-Japan-ordern.html
Maybe this is helpful. It's from our friend Uroko Sakanabito, you might know him from the german arcade boards.
-
so cool, thx a lot for the info, i'll definitely have to check this out and enter a permanent search for space firebird (in case that is possible). hopefully, i'll be able to snatch original parts one day ...
-
just tried to register there, no matter which name i enter under yahoo user id, i always get this (translated) text: Does this Yahoo! JAPAN ID is already used, and includes a disabled character.
just to give you an example: i use ully (followed by the @yahoo.co.jp) and get the above-mentioned message. man, i'm not disabled ... :P
-
You don't need to register there. You can't bid, because the japanese people only trade with other japanese people. I don't know what's the problem there, but you have to use a proxy-bidder. That's a guy located in Japan that bids for you, pays the seller, receives the packet and sends it to you. Just look through the auctions and you will hopefully find something. I think a permanent search or something is quite difficult to install as everything is in japanese.
You need the japanese name of the game to find something useful there. You'll find most of these in the english wikipedia. Space Firebird for example is スペース ファイアーバード
If you enter this, you'll find two flyers or something:

You don't need to register there. You can't bid, because the japanese people only trade with other japanese people. I don't know what's the problem there, but you have to use a proxy-bidder. Cool, those are インスト or instruction cards. Looks like Tehkan licensed Space Firebird as well. They also licensed Donkey Kong (as did Sega)!

thx a lot for the tip, will have to do a manual search from time to time then!

Hi guys,
I am working on the Nintendo Space Firebird marquee to vectorise it, and i was wondering what the little "stamp" was what you can see on this picture :
Thanks to Charles (Biomech011) i know now that its the logo for Leisure and Allied Industries.

He send me this pic, and the quality is a bit higher than the source i have.

The progress is comming along on the marquee, and it will be available for free when i finish it.

Is there anyone out there that has something with this logo and could provide me a higher quality pic / scan of this logo ?
Any help is appriciated !
Thanks
Etienne

Never mind Boys and girls, Charles gave me a perfect picture..
Vector done ;)

I would leave it from the marquee...doesn't have to be there.... IMHO ::)

fabulous work so far, etienne, you rock, man! BUT ...

... honestly I would leave it out as well, because I think it's just a sticker someone put there. That logo isn't on the original Out Run marquee either and it looks out of place. Additionally, I don't see a connection between that company and Nintendo. But since you've already vectored it, you can "produce" two versions, one with and one without the logo!
-
That was exactly my intention ;)
-
LAI is a company that produced/licensed arcade cabinets in Australia, so those were likely from an Australian produced machine.

What he said ^^
LAI is an Australian company and produced games for Australia. Hence the logo has the outline of the country.
It shouldn't be on there unless you want an LAI version marquee.

No offence my friend, but that Nintendo logo looks like todays' logo. At least "oval" around the name is too fat, maybe the letters too. Also, there's a TM in there which isn't on the original........

youre right, no offence taken ;)

Lovely cab you have! I'm making a vector of the Space Firebird using one of your photos in this thread as reference. Unfortunately the best image you have here is a little low res and it's hard to make out small details. Could you take a few close up shots of the CPO for me? When I'm done I'm going to share the vector here. Cheers!
