Title: Sega Bomber
Post by: level42 on March 25, 2012, 10:22:21 PM
Thought the Sega Bomber (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2966.msg47307#msg47307) deserved it's own thread:

This machine really is something else....

First the monitor: I have never seen this one before. It is a Nec monitor in every way, the CRT is Nec as well as the chassis. The shape of the chassis would make you think it might be a TV chassis in essence....

The tube

Overview of the chassis. It is mounted sideways.

Separate controls but still need to adjust from the back....

Detail of the separate section on the left:

Overview if the lower section. On the bottom left three (!) transformers, HUGE heatsink, some diode bridge and a couple of big caps.
In the middle you see the two (!) PCBs with an interesting mounting method.
Top left you see the coin-mech with under it the bucket. To the right there is was looks like a sound amp and a board to adjust every individual sound.

Power supply section:

Audio amp (we think):

The individual sound pots PCB:

Coin section and joystick:

Control section:

As mentioned, there are TWO PCB's for a simple game like this.....why ? Well.....pretty simple: it doesn't have a processor. Like Pong and several other games of this era, but we were still a bit surprised by this....

Here is PCB 1:

Code of PCB1 (SEGA 95576X-P):

PCB2:

PCB2 code (SEGA 95575X-P)

As you can see no processor, only TTL chips and a couple of character ROMs. Totally amazing that this thing still works IMHO.
Also because it doesn't have a processor it is not in MAME.

The plan is to work a bit on it the friday evening before we go to the South Coast Slam. We'll clean it (further, Robin already did some cleaning)
We will give it a spin now that we can credit it, I'll see if I can put a (temporary) credit button on the front so it can be played on the Slam show and make some video and pics of it running ! Then we'll remove the joystick for the transport.

I would really like to know if someone knows which monitor that Nec is. There are some markings on the PCB but I don't believe it's the model nr.

...the only small disappointment we had was that there were no manuals inside, as we have found plenty of them in other cabs from the same warehouse before. Would have been sweet to be able to scan the game and monitor docs.

Hey dudes,

That is some totally awesome pictures. What is more interesting is I *swear* I had a couple of Sega pcbs that look like that somewhere. I always wondered what they were as I knew they were TTL only, i'll have to try and find them.

Can't wait to have this running at the 'Slam!!

Only three weeks to go :)

What I find amazing to think off is that this game was on location when new, played 22158 games and then was not doing well enough anymore (but still working), got moved into that warehouse after what maybe 4 or 5 years of use and then it was there for 30 years. Doing nothing. Just waiting there.

I love that operator for not ditching all the great games we picked up there !

how many games did you (or we) take in total? Must be a lot!

Yeah that Operator is awesome - it was a good find Andre.

Is there any decent cabs still there?

Totally lost track, but a lot for sure, although it still looks like nothing was ever removed !!!

There are still some worthwhile cabs if you have lots of space but no real classics I guess.

Not sure if this will be completely successful, but on my first trip I pulled out 3 Berzerks, 4 Centi's (1 is Gyruss's) and 1 Armor Attack.

I got a Centi (1 of the 4 that André took), a Breakout, a Vanguard, a bootleg Scramble and a Vega (which I sold to robin).

Oh, and a Video Pinball for André

A good number of cabs also left at the "DLF members raid".

From the head:
Power Drift sit down, Breakout, Super Bug to Hatster. A Taito to RobinHolland. Pascal took NBA jam IIIRC.
Rémi, at least one Taito and a couple of Neo Geos. Others already mentioned I guess by the owners ?
