Title: The USA 2011 trip...
Post by: level42 on July 18, 2011, 05:59:18 AM
Well, we're still here for a few days, but I wanted to show off what I picked up:

Found these at Target Pittsfield:
Not really cheap at 20 bucks but...nice.

And picked some of these up at Best Buy Jersey City (should have bought them at Target as well though, they had much more different sets (even a special 80's colors set !) and better prices.....but didn't know then...

I also have some parts that BR sent to my uncles address thanks to Barry among them new buttons for the Asterock...

Glad you got the parts.

If you guys ever need Sharpies like that, let me know.  Happy to pick some up and ship them at cost.

Right now you can get them for $1 each.

Thanks again Barry....sorry about the PP hassle...

I also picked up a Funspot mug (at least the redemption tickets were good for something ;))

Surprise: my cousin loved the pics I showed from Funspot so we're heading back up there again tomorrow !!!
What a great last day in the US :)

Home Sweet Home !!!

For me it's like 5 am now without any sleep....but whatever......it was a brilliant holiday....totally have to get used to the cold and grey weather here now !

I will try to upload pics & vid's ASAP but please give me some time....

OK...so.....from now on, my focus is 100% Eurocade.....the website says it's only 44 days away !!!!

Welcome back, can't wait for the pictures.
Title: Re: The USA 2011 trip...
Post by: level42 on July 21, 2011, 11:23:16 AM
Thanks.....

I imported some nice stuff....iPad 64GB with 3G, Airport Extreme and a Magic Trackpad...yes Mr. Jobs got a bit richer again....but it was all so "cheap" there ;)

The glasses seem to have survived. I've also got a Funspot mug and my son "bought" a Funspot poster from some of the tickets he got from the redemption machines for me....saying "you can put it up at Eurocade dad"....which was touching to hear :)

Funny thing....I was watching an ancient movie (1981) called Arthur on the plane back home (yeah I know....ultra-cheesy but I hadn't seen it in about 30 years)) and there's a scene at an arcade and there's plenty redemption stuff and tickets, even back then. Arthur did have an arcade machine at his house but the in-flight LCD was too blurry to see which one I think it was Tron. He also had a pinball. And he mentions Space Invaders while being in the arcade....

Anyway, this proves that redemption isn't something of the recent years....it works great though, my son was pretty nuts about them....I figure I could have played at least two whole nights with the 175 tokes I got with the coupon and 20 bucks....but my son sped it up "a bit" with those machines. Did tell him to cool it though, and he still played a good number of classics as well....anyway, we all had great fun...

That's the idea....although looking at them now, I'm not exactly sure if I got the right one's....they have so many different products...:

Gee look at the 80's colors.....I see Ms.Pac Pink and Galaxian Green ;)

OK, some first hard proof then, some of the stuff I brought back:

On the far left, totally arcade unrelated, but I've always wanted a key-chain bottle opener (not that I drink _that_ much, but it's just handy  ;D), and this is a nice souvenir.
It's a lobster, very popular food in the New England coast area...
Next right to it, a US extension cord (for small loads). I'll cut off the US plug and install a European. It has 3 US connections. Pretty handy for devices I bought in the US that accept all voltages. A good investment at $1.95 (at Target).

Further, the Bob Roberts parts that were delivered at my Uncle & Aunt's while we were there (perfect timed !). Then the glasses of course, pretty big size for us (pint size) and the funspot mug and poster.

OK you picture hungry wolves....here's the first batch of Funspot pics.

Turns out that I only made pics of the third floor of Funspot (where the vast majority of all the classics are) but forgot to take pics on the first and second where there are also a couple of classics scattered around and some nice new machines and racers. I did video there though so expect that later.

I don't feel like copying each picture's link here, so here is a link to the album:

Uploading the 2nd batch now so be sure to check back in a bout 10 minutes to see all the pics.

I will put some here in the thread to comment on some...
Title: Re: The USA 2011 trip...
Post by: level42 on July 22, 2011, 03:32:19 PM
Some general comments:

- the lighting on the 3rd floor is filtered red. I guess it's to lower the light to see the (old) CRT's better. Does make it harder to take pics (and esp. video)
- first time I played Spyhunter, and to boot it was a sit-down. Great game !!
- much to my regret the sit-down Night Driver and Red Baron cockpit weren't working
- very much to my own surprise I really liked the Hard Drivin' cockpit, even though the seat-lock and motor on the steering wheel didn't work. What a brilliant technological accomplishment for it's time, the first REAL 3D race game.
- played Quantum for the first time in my life. GREAT !!!
- tried ALL the LD games there. One had crashed before and showed a windows screen ! So, some games are running Daphne, but I couldn't tell which.

On the wall: the article in the "Weirs Times" about fellow Dutchman Aart van Vliet and his Galaxian world record:

First time I played Warlords on an arcade machine. It's the upright and it has a mirror set up with a backdrop like AD and SI which gives a great 3D effect and I tried to capture that but almost impossible of course. Warlords should really be played with at least two players (max on the upright) or even better 4 on a cocktail, but the cocktail of course lacks the nice 3D set-up.
Hope this pic is an inspiration for Speleo_DE ;)

...and an inspirational picture for myself:

The best I could do on Gravitar. It's hard to play while people walk around sometimes...Gravitar requires you to be VERY calm and focussed....still, top of the list :D
(http://gallery.me.com/andre.huijts/100956/DSCF7051/web.jpg?ver=13113396430001)

The high-score board. It shows pics of the record holders (at Funspot, not world-record, although some ARE WR's of course).
I didn't figure out that it actually is a touch screen until I was told how it worked ! (Suggested to Gary to put a sign to say it's a touch-screen :)) You can look up the records by game or player's name.

Just because I love it so much....thanks for spoiling me Erik ! ;)

Now, that is a rare sight, my wife playing a game ! (She prefers pinball)...

Chatting with Gary. What an excellent guy he is ! Very friendly and taking the time for a nice chat about "the hobby"...
He was happy I had asked for him. He told me so many people from the forums come to funspot and never say they are there, only later he reads on the forums they were there...so if you go, ask for Gary, if he has time he'll try to hook up with you.

Although I HATE real clowns I just loved that bezel ! AND it's still a great game !!! (Maybe I just liked the sight of the smacked down clowns when I missed  ;D ;D ;D)

The "new" machines. Not 200 though...but still a LOT. There was a simular row on the back side of those machines PLUS the cockpits on the wall.
The indoor mini-golf is still there. What a waste of space ;) ;) ;)

I loved playing the Death Race. It warped me back to the late 70's when I played it at the camping site's "arcade"....

i especially love the yellow death race as well as the sega / gremlin & taito rows - nothing beats manufacturer or theme rows! which games that you hadn't played / known before did you enjoy the most? were there any which made you say "i would love to have that one in my collection"?

Yup....well I was well asleep (although pretty late) but then the firemen had a job somewhere in the neighborhood at about 4.00 and although I tried I couldn't sleep anymore until now :P

Why do they need the stupid sirens at 4.00, I mean everyone's asleep at that time ! ;)

Thank you very much for the story and the pictures, very nice. I will enjoy them piece for piece later tonight, when I have more time. But it lloks awful quiet at funspot, hardly any gamers, where you there after closing hours?

Anyway, everytime I see pictures of this 'Mekka', The urge to go there too gets bigger. I guess 2012 could be the year to go there.

But Eurocade will be a great appetizer for this urge too, and I'm sure great stories and nice pictures will come out from it.

In fact, it was very lively during all my visits (4 nights, 1 day  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D). It was holiday time in the USA now (unlike it was when I was there first time in 2006).
I just timed my pics to get as few people in there as possible. Also, the truth is that the third floor is the least busiest. But still lot's of people enjoying the old games. It was fun to see a father explain a son about Berzerk. He finished: Do you want to give it a try ? Son's reply (after some doubt) naaahhh ....but plenty of other younger kids played the oldies.. (see some pics).

The video will show better. Also....it's a HUGE place ! This makes it look less busy.

....oh and Erik (and the rest), here's Gary explaining about the old games not being the "token eaters":
http://youtu.be/uNHxJEsF2k0

(and also how to help them).

I bet there are machines that go through days without a single play... the more obscure one's, esp. the B/W one's too I think...

Added one more pic:

Took it with my crappy phone camera. The first "arcade moment" in the US, when we landed at JFK.
There were two of these "isles" in the arrivals hall.

When we left there were plenty of these "isles" all over the terminal...all had at least one Galaga/Ms.Pac

The 2nd "arcade moment" was when I spotted a converted cab with Ms.Pac inside at the local (Jersey City) Laundromat.
A laundromat is a sight to see for us anyway (I don't think there are many left in Holland) but it was fun because it's so often mentioned on f.i. KLOV forum that there are still (old) cabs at laundromats.

Ha !

My cousin who lives in the US and joined me to a Funspot visit in 2011 just facetimed me. He had to think about me because he had discovered this place recently: http://www.pinballwizardarcade.com/gallery/

and man-o-man it is only 8 miles from his home !!!!!!!

He also mentioned he had gotten a great groupon deal for Funspot (think it was 60 dollar worth of tokens and a free lunch for 30 USD !) and he was going there end of january.

I just love that I triggered some arcade love with my cousin over there....and he's bringing his 10 year old son too....if that ain't ArcadeLifeStyle !  ;D ;D

[EDIT] Wow, look at that game list 167 video games !!!!! AARRRGGHGHHH.....OK, I think another family visit is very necessary for 2014 or so....

Rats, my cousin and I just had a nice FaceTime session.....he was making me jealous because he was at Fun Spot with his son.

Pretty cool to see them enjoying it a lot !!
