Last week i came across an ad posted by my good friend Ronald Reagan in the famous marktplaats topic. It was for a (non working) Spy Hunter, one of the most hideous cabinets ever created (imo). The art style and cab design are quite tacky but the game play and music are great! I have played this game a lot on my 444-in-one cartridge on my nes when i was younger, and always loved it.
The cab was located near Antwerp, Belgium and the price was relatively low. So after some (minor) negotiation, the seller and i came to an agreement. And because he had to play the final of some pinball competition in the Netherlands, he was so nice to deliver it at my front door. So no road-trip this time, too bad, but my wallet is quite happy with it.
After some quick cleaning this is what i got:
the front is in okay condition
(http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/6091/imag3375.jpg)
there is some damage on the side art
(http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/6088/imag3331.jpg)
the other side is worse
(http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/5254/imag3336.jpg)
the vinyl on the bottom of the cabinet is getting loose
(http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/9232/imag3337.jpg)
the maque has seen better days, there seems to be air between the sticker and the glass
(http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4066/imag3335.jpg)
bezel looks really good, almost no damage
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7172/imag3346.jpg)
I could use a new sticker behind the steering wheel
(http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/3783/imag3339.jpg)
And the wheel itself could use a nice layer of fresh paint
(http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/4315/imag3347.jpg)
The only thing i like about the appearance of the cab, the coin-door ;)
Now let's take a look inside
(http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/9539/imag3352.jpg)
very dirty
(http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/3561/imag3354.jpg)
the game pcb
(http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3577/imag3359.jpg)
and lot's of other boards, they scare me a bit, so many things that can break down.
The dip-switch setting instructions are still there
(http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/7361/imag3361.jpg)
Both manuals :D
(http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6061/imag3320.jpg)
And the coin box
(http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/533/imag3321.jpg)
After turning the game on i get this garbage on the screen. The lights behind the marque and coin-door both work. But there is no sound, not even after inserting a euro (yes, the cab works on euro's). And what's worse, there are sparks coming out of the back of the monitor!

Congrats Gyruss !
Sparks :o always exciting ! ;D
-
Thanks, tomorrow i'll start cleaning the inside and it seems i really have to get my own multimeter. ;)
I just turned the machine on again and now the screen shows this:

looks like a board error to me
-
cool catch 8), pieter! although i'm not a fan of spy hunter, i like that futuristic "steeering wheel".
btw, new year's eve is over, so you'd better stop with those monitor fireworks or your neighbours could get angry ;)

Don't know, But those sparks coming from the anode connection on the tube and inside the neck can't be good. So after cleaning i will check the voltages from the power supply to the pcb. This was told me to do by some guys on klov: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=167166&highlight=spy+hunter
Anyway, i have a feeling it's going to be hard to get it working again, but we will see, i'll be asking a lot of questions. ;)
-
Thanks Ully. Although it looks odd next to the other cabinets in my game room, i'm still happy with it.
I bought this with the money i got from selling my generic 60-in-1. Not a bad trade in my opinion. ;)
-
Mame the bitch ;D
-
I'll mame your mother  ;) ;) ;)
All the parts are available, so i guess it'll work eventually. And i could always use one of those 5 monitors i got at home. ;)
-
ah the Spy Hunter arrived! Nice typical 80's secret agent theme on the sideart. Looking forward to play on it
-
Nice one! I hope you'll be faster than me on that one. I got my Spy Hunter (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=301.0) since more than 3 years... and the game is 'almost' untouched since... All I know is that the game is non working. Unfortunately, that cabinet is almost unreachable yet, and I'll have to wait the end of the Nuno's Lair V3 construction to start working on it :-[
Good luck for your restoration 8)
-
First things to do is replace those inter-board ribbon cables. They cause all kinds of problems.

Make sure the battery on that MCR power supply in it isn't leaking... otherwise you'd better remove it asap. This is a common cause of failure in all these Midway games. However there's a kit (http://arcarc.xmission.com/Kits%20and%20Hacks/MCR%20Switcher.pdf) that allows the use of a modern switching power supply in them.

Tacky is the new cool!
And you who loved the deep bass of your DK will adore the extra deep bass of SH's groove.
Regading the sparks behind the monitors, I had that scary problem with a cab I bought a few months ago and Kid (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?action=profile;u=1026) found the solution (http://arcade-system.actifforum.com/aides-depannages-bricolages-renovations-f12/fuite-tht-sur-platine-hantarex-9110-t4764.htm) for "electronoob me" (the post is in french but the pictures are self explanatory, that's an easy fix).
Not sure it's exately the same problem you're having though...
-
How much did you pay? (I hope that isn't a rude question)
Just curious with the state of the cab and such.
-
Nice catch Gyruss. The cab is indeed a bit odd looking, but it's the gameplay that counts, and Spy Hunter is a very fun game. I hope that you get it on its feet soon, would love to play a bit on it when I collect my monitors. :)

Thanks Eric, but don't get you hopes up, it's going to take some time.

Thanks, are these for sale somewhere or do you have to make them yourself?

Yes, I already read about the issue and the replacement power supply, i'll cleand the inside today and will check if it's still intact.

My france is really bad so don't understand everything of it. Guys on klov think it maybe a hairline fracture in the tube.

just keep the fire extinguisher ready ;D

You can probably do it with scsi cables but getting the right length is a bit of a problem.
The easiest route is Bob Roberts: http://www.therealbobroberts.net/mcr.html
He also sells battery kits for MCR games and other rebuild kits.
-
Thanks, i see arcadeshop also sells them. Do you have a spy hunter yourself?
