Title: [Vectorising] The Crazy Kong Control Panel Overlay
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on December 27, 2010, 10:42:48 AM
Since i have a temporary control panel (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2126.msg25306#msg25306) on my Crazy kong, and that there are no vector files yet for this,
i decided to start on the vectorisation of the Crazy Kong CPO.

in order to match the holes of the CP i measured everything first..

Carefully measure every thing i need to make refference coordinates  ;)

After that noted all the measurements on a simple sketch.

Time for Illustrator..
As you can see in the scan of the original CP, this can really use some touchup  :P

The scan that Bela made or me was a little better , but also i do not like the colours..

Time to be creative again, and search for some sources..
found the instruction card, and hey thats almost what im looking for..

Lets take a closer look..
Thats the same pic, only in mirror..

Also found a PDF Vector file of this instruction card, lets hope this has the right colours as well..

The PDF was not exactly in the shape when i put it on top of the scan, so i decided to ajust it..
A few guidelines will do the trick  ;D

Mario is finished, and looks great if you ask me..
On top of black he is perfect to me !

In this moment im fiddling around a bit with the stars and griders...

More to come....

What a dedicated and precise work you're doing there, Etienne.
Your CK resto threads are really interesting to follow.
Let me know if I can help with the bezel (as we talked about earlier of maybe splitting the job with Falcon NL)?

Thanks Chris!

about the bezel..
Thats what i PM-ed a while ago..
I was already wondering how the progress is going..  ;)

The bezel files are on my FTP and you guys have accounts there
i thought you two would talk to eachother who does what ?

Anyway , it s great that you guys want to help with this !
And ofcourse, please make a topic with "[Vectorising]" in the artwork area  ::)

the bezel is not for me, but for Bela..
his bezel is broken, mine is in good shape thanks god..

it will be nice though to have a complete set of Arts from Zaccaria Crazy kong in vector format.

Thanx guys, ill need your support...

This will be the next challenge:

this is the best sourcepic i could find  :-\

I did already some "resolution boosting"  ;D
Its a little better, but still will be difficult..
If anybody has a better pic, i'm here  ;)

And i hope chris or falcon will do the bezel soon because this looks simular:

but i am not always behind my laptop  ;)

Time for the other 2 mario's

they are the same, so i only need to recreate one..

Time for some guidelines again  :D

And mario's paths are ready..  time to color him  :)

And done.

its almost like putting together a jigsaw puzzle  :D

Can anybody tell me how to do the "spraypaint" part under the joystick ?

If you want it to be exactly the same, you have no choice but to zoom in really hard and trace every little spot.

If you don't mind approximation, download an illustrator paint splatter brush shape from somewhere like deviantart.com and draw with that.

 :'(...

Well a man has got to do what a man has got to do !  ;)

So i started with some different tracing options, and continue to manual ajust it as far as possible.
its not finished yet , but im progressing..

and to make it less boring, i also worked on the rest for a bit...

Hello hello hello everybody  :D , here is mister Anal again  ;)

Opinion needed guys....

regarding the instruction card area..

Original CP:

95% black background:

98% black background:

or 100% black background:

I like 100%, it looks tight, but the original looks like its more grey, almost like there is a "window" with a card behind.
the repro at 95% looks cool too, or in between..  98%..

Dont know guy's ..

NEED INPUT !!  :D ;D  :D ;D

There is a "window" with a card behind on my Crazy Kong CP
Title: Re: [Vectorising] The Crazy Kong Control Panel Overlay
Post by: Superully on December 31, 2010, 01:02:25 PM
not sure, but since this is the control panel i'd leave it in one piece without a window and go with 100% black. can you show us the entire cpo in the three different variations?

Sure  ;)

My Original CP:

Bela's scan of his original:

95% black background:

98% black background:

100% black background:

Its almost finished by the way   :-*

I guess creating a transparant section and putting a real separate card behind it really isn't an option right ? (Since the original has it like that, as Robin mentions).

But that's (part off) a DK instruction card:

and thus not original... just MHO.....

Andre is right, remember after i crawl into the cab what i found ...

anyway , also i noticed that there are different CPO's , or maybe another run was made with differences

My CPO has the instructions printed on the plexi, and is square, has a AVG logo, blue around the stars next to the instructions instead of green and different colors in mario and the griders..

I looked at many pics, and in the rest of the arts i cannot discover green, so i decided to use blue in the stars

i could make a transparant section, but i like also the text like it is now.

also i noticed that the CP of bela and robin are rounded edges, and they look the same exept for the instruction part
do you have a full size cab or a mini like mine Robin ?
that could explane the differences since Bela has the full upright..
does your cp have a "window" bela ?

i need to admit with the little graphics it looks nice in the instructions, an i found 2 of crazy kong

they look like instructions from cocktails though..

(http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/crazykong/vectoring/cp/ckinstr.jpg) (http://www.opdenkelder.com/pics/crazykong/vectoring/cp/ck2instr.jpg)

the last one looks like its original from the falcon version, but its damn ugly..

i also see differences in the bezel, mine does not have the zaccaria logo in the bottompart.

anyway, i think i will stick with the text only like it is in Bela's CPO.
I dont have any resource for the AVG logo, and also i dont like it in there..

ps it looks like you also need a new CP / CPO robin, its hacked with a extra button..

and i guess bela likes a new one too, do you guys want to join in when im going to print ? it saves 17,50€ startup costs if i let them print 3 CPO's in one go and later cut them.
thats what i did with the galaxian bezel and marquee, 2 pieces of graphics on one piece of vinyl instead of 2 separate jobs.

André is right, don't hesitate to give the colors a little boost compared to the ones on the orginal CPO you own.
Title: Re: [Vectorising] The Crazy Kong Control Panel Overlay
Post by: level42 on January 03, 2011, 11:52:27 PM
Yup. Here's a reminder from my Puckman CPO:

The parts around the holes had been covered, not only by the buttons, but even still by the original protective film of the CPO vinyl.
The differences with the colors that have been in the "open air" are pretty clear :)
Title: Re: [Vectorising] The Crazy Kong Control Panel Overlay
Post by: Etienne MacGyver on January 04, 2011, 12:04:42 PM
True, but thisone is silkscreened on the bottom of the plexi. so just light was exposed to it , and not "hand dirt", but you are right.

anyway , i will find a cool color combi, because as you can see that the griders in my old CPO are orange (also ingame by the way) and on the bezel they are purple..
so there is 2 sides of the knive here..
the ingame griders are orange, wich could be seen as "original" but the bezel and sidearts are purple, like donkey kong instead of Crazy Kong..
i like more the purple to be honest..

i think i will do the matching with the bezel, that should look the best i think..

Digging this old thread for a good reason.

On saturday Etienne and I talked about the Crazy Kong and it turned out that we both did the same work.....vectorize the controlpanel artwork  :P
I really should have signed in earlier here!!

We said we would compare the two versions and combine them for a perfect solution BEFORE both of us have them printed.

So, here's large JPG I exported from CorelDraw (I drew the CPO with it).

What's your opinion, gentlemen? I know I have to adjust the colours!!

PS: I've also done a separate instruction card because my original panel had that window. I just can't find it at the moment  ???

Thanks Luigi !

I believe that Robin's CK also has this panel, and according to him there was an original donkey kong instruction card behind it..

And the CPO's are ready, i just picked them up from the printers.

They are printed in the same way as the Galaxian Bezel (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=2109.msg26597#msg26597) i did for Bela.

Nicely packed, as i am used from them  :-*

They only spelled my name wrong  :D

Well, who cares, as long as the quality is good !

This time i dont want to "open" the protective layer, so if you want to see the quality, check the galaxian threat ;)

I tried to take a pic with backlight to see something, but i think we need to wait to see it when its installed..

For those who are interested, the printer this is printed on is a Epson Stylus Pro GS 6000 Solvent Ink Printer (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Pro/SeriesStylusProGS6000/Overview.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes) :-*

mwa, its only 25.000 US$...   ;D

strange though, on the NL website they say its € 26.174  which is 35.934 US$  :o
If you take out the taxes (that are included in the NL webpage and recalculate, its still 29.105 US$)

About the hard vectoring; You know the answer already..

no problem  ;)

Well, everything in Europe is more expensive for a couple of reasons.
First being TAX TAX TAX and second MORE TAX....
and then there's the problem of lots of small or even smaller countries (compared to the US) which require more distributors etc. etc.

Apart from that, I also think we always simply get screwed over here....

Anyway....GREAT :)

What's the lower one with 3 holes in the middle?  It looks like it matches Astro Wars but isn't the same style as the AW picture I have or the one on the flyer. Astro Wars was Right/Left/Fire so I'm curious about the 3 holes...

Yeah, and also where to get it..  for now i only created "CPU's" instead of "CPO's" which are no problem because the plexi protects the print.

After a long time , i decided it was about time to apply the CK controlpanel artwork to the new plexi  ::)

Carefully pulling the protective layer off and expose the glue side..

I sprayed water on the surface to make adjustments easier..  :P

Plexi in place..

After squeeging the water out i cutted it ro a rough shape..

in order to continue with the precision cuts, always use a new knife in your scalpel  8)

Cutting done !

Peeling off the protective layer on the other side of the plexi..

I am happy with the results  :-*

Outside shot at daylight

And another

it was easier than i expected, and i am very happy with the results.

That will look much more nice that my temporary panel  ;)
