Title: An arcade extra for Safari browser users
Post by: liquidx on June 09, 2010, 09:55:41 PM
Apple just released version 5 of their Safari browser and it now includes extensions.

As I wanted to play with this I decided to make a little arcade-related extension as a test. It lets you select text on a page, right-click on the mouse, and search for that text on either KLOV or the IPDB.

I often find myself reading a post where someone mentions a game I'd like more info about, this lets you do it without having to manually open a new window/tab, go to klov, search etc…

You can get a little more info and download it here (http://things.be/journal/2010/6/9/first-safari-extension/).

Feedback appreciated.

Thanks,
Colin

Hey Colin,

Nice work, I downloaded Safari 5 yesterday, but I get an error when I try to install the extension, saying I have extensions disabled and telling me I can turn them on in my Safari preferences BUT I don't have the extensions icon between the security and advanced icons !?!?!

Heh, of course it took me only one Google to find the solution:

Already did on KLOV, can't remember if I have a BYOAC account, I need to check :)

Have fun with the new mac, I replaced my trusty old Powermac with an iMac i5 and couldn't be happier.

Hey, I just got an idea, can you also do the same for http://www.arcadeflyers.com/ ?

:D

I was planning arcadeflyers too, as soon as I've added preferences to activate/deactivate the individual sites in preferences so it doesn't get too crowded.
I thought about manuals too but couldn't find a complete enough source with built-in search.

In any case, I wanted it out there first before I do too much work on it for nothing :)

Geez that sucks. I was already planning on it, but this confirms that I will first have it tested fully in the store when I pick it up.

I've had too many products show some failure out of the box and I hate having to drag it back to the store.

I even had one time that I bought a new audio device, turned out to fail right away when I installed it, went back THE SAME DAY, and the assholes wanted to send it in for repair under warranty (which probably meant waiting for 3 weeks or more) ! I made a lot of fuss (and I know my rights) and demanded another (tested working) one in exchange instead. Sad that I needed to make a lot of fuss before they gave in.....also the last time I bought something from that store.

it's true, but my model seem to avoid the yellow color desease... that's a point.

by the way, what's the model you're about to buy ?

Hah, typing this from my brand new iMac. It's so FUCKING BIG :D I love it !

Specs:
27" 16:9
3.06 Mhz Intel Core 2 duo
2560x1440 resolution
4GB RAM
1 TB Hard drive
8x double layer Super drive
ATI Radeon HD4670 graphics with 256 MB

Should be good enough for the coming 3 years.....at least ;)

Now going to put all my data across with the migration assistant....(gotta love OS X) !

Okay you choose the 27" dual core version...
wireless keyboard and mouse ?
no yellow tint on the screen ?

I hope to bring my 27" i5 back home today  :ghost:

got it just for an evening long, but I'm missing it already

Have fun, mate !

It's not a joke. It's a known problem...

the problem was huge at the beginning of 27" production, in late 2009.
Now it's less important, but it's still exist !
for exemple, the one in demonstration at my local reseller has the yellowness desease.

This could be seamless but if you're ino photographic works, this could be a real weakness.
there is a sample pictures to check the degree of illness your screen has :

http://tapplox.com/imac-led.html (http://tapplox.com/imac-led.html)

top and bottom grey squares should look the same colour

And as the machine is quite expensive, it should be perfect outta the box.

PS : I hop your imac isn't infected...

Thanks, it looks perfect to me. Although I only do "home" photographic work I am pretty critical when it comes to displays/colors etc.
I can say this is the most freaking beautiful computer screen I've ever worked with, it's simply amazing.

Colin, sorry for de-raling this thread ! Back on topic now ! :D

I really hope you can add the Arcade flyer option ! ;)

no problem.

I've added the flyers to it, but the automatic update doesn't seem to be picking it up at the moment.

You can just re-download (http://c0000951.cdn1.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/arcade.safariextz) it manually and install. You'll also have extra preferences to enable/disable sites.

Hey Colin,

Maybe stupid or straightforward but I found another GREAT application of your tool.

I'm still not very experienced in pinballs and when reading forums like www.gameroom.be the flipper experts use a lot of abbreviations (like STTNG) for pinballs that I don't (always) know what they mean.
Now, ipdb.org is pretty smart and recognizes these abbreviations so what I do now is select it, right click Search in IPDB and presto, I know what they actually mean ! :D

By the way, thanks again for this brilliant little tool, I use it SO much !  ;D ;D ;D

PC users in the arcade hobby: it's worth switching to Safari just for this "little" tool IMHO !

Thanks.

Never thought of using it for that, I still get caught by the odd pinball abbreviation too.

I looked at making a Google Chrome version of the plugin so any platform could use it but chrome doesn't let you access the contextual menu.
