Let's start to repair the base

First of all, removing the bad wood...

...then use a 'wood filler' :

I'm sanding it... manually...

All the front is done...

...but I need to put some more 'wood filler'  to finish as clean as possible and removing small holes...

... first time I'm doing that kind of job, so be indulgent...

Painting time

Here's the tools of the day :

I'l use satin black paint, as close as possible as the original paint.

A last shot before painting...  :o

First test...

... 16 hours later, Let's sand the imperfection :

I'm recoverning the 'inside border', to protect the origina vinyl from new paint :

First layer :

Beware : fresh paint

Ok, now let's wait 24 hours the 2nd layer  :o

OKey, 36 hours later, I'm applying the second layer

... and 36 hours later, it's now all dry... I think 2 layers will be enough  8)

...removing the protection :

...and there it is  :o

I cannot resist... ACE ... Stand Up !!!

I'm really happy with that result  :P

Can't you believe it's the same cab at this point      :?:

It's not 100% perfect, but it's fine for me  :)

Thanks for your comments Jason  :)

Time to apply the vinyl...

Let's test that first on the front speaker panel.

It looks like this :

I remove the old damaged vinyl, and I'm starting to sand with a very small grain

and I remove all the dust, of course :

OK, here's the NEW vinyl  ( thanks again Jas'  :o  ) :

I can't miss the thing... coz I just have the right amount of vinyl for that, and the two cab' sides  :?

Well, I'm not sure if the glue on that vinyl will be strong enough, so I'll use this adhesive spray :

I apply the spray...

...and put the vinyl :

I'll use this blade to cut it

...like this

and here's the final result :

I'm happy with the result  :D  But I think I don't need to use adhesive spray anymore, coz' the original adhesive on the vinyl looks strong enough  8)

..and now, ladies & gentlemen.. the most thrilling part : new vinyl on both cab' side  :?

Ok,  I cut the first side shape, slightly bigger than the true dimension of course :

... hopefully, the amount of vinyl that I have is just enough for both side, well done Jas'

Here's the rest of the vinyl... I'll use it for seconde side l8ter :

Before applying the vinyl, I'll manually sand the side one more time with a thiny grain :

Here is how I'm fixing the vinyl. I can't do it alone, so... I'm calling "Darth Nunette"  to help me

I fix the lower part like this...

...I can now apply the upper part :

Now that the upper part is fixed, I can apply now the lower part like this :

Done  8)  :

First side is... DONE  :P

... arg, I can't resist

I'll fix it now... I'm choosing the right place for the side ( I've used some Space Ace side  pictures taken at the Jason's Lair to adjust it as best as possible ) :

Like the vinyl, I'll apply the side art sticker in two steps.

1 -> The lower part :

2 -> The rest... easy  :D

...and I finally remove the protecting layer :

...and there is it :

 :P  :P  :P

OK, let's go with the other side :

...same job : adjusting the vinyl + side art appy...  8)

Time for T-Molding now :

...done for the first side :

For the second side, there is a problem  :? The trench is too large for the T-molding...  :?  I have to find a way to fix it anyway...
Title: Space Ace -> THE restoration !!!
Post by: DarthNuno on October 10, 2006, 09:03:52 PM
...like I said previously, the trench for the second side is too large for the T-molding :

...after trying several glues, I'm still not able to found a solution to fix strongly the T-molding in the trench, so I decide to use wood filer... again  :?

...and, of course, I have to use -once again- the router    Not an easy task when I have to avoid damaging the  finished sides

Now, let's paint the trench :

...done :

To fill that trench is a very hard job    So, I'll try a last solution to fix the T-molding inside the trench...  an hot glue gun :

...closer...

Holy Jesus... THIS is the issue  :P

OK, now I can finally fix the T-molding with the hot glue gun  :)

and voila  :P  :P  :P

First stage : to pass this stairs  :D  :

Now, time to repair the bezel support. Here's the original one :

:x completely destroyed    Nothing to do with that  :?

I'll make a brand new one    Where to find a perfect template ?

  In my Atari Dragon's Lair  of course   :o

Let's check for that piece inside the DL :

Ok, easy to remove  :)

ready to cut

...a thing to do carefully is to cut that angle :

...easy, with the exact pattern to follow...

The bezel support is now totally finished :

Now, let's have a look at the coins doors. One door is missing  :?  The other one, on the picture, need to be paint.

Let's fix the thing. I'll put the two coins doors later, when they will be sanded & painted  8)

Before fixing the speakers support fully restored, I have to remove the nails, full of  rust  :?  ...

...like this :

OK, it's time to work on the back of that cab'.

The upper part is in very bad shape, have a look :

Impossible to corret it  :( Too much water damages    :

Ok, no other choice than to reproduce it  :

Here's the back of the cabinet...

There is three parts to build/repro... I've already done the first one previously... so let's do the others : the main backdoor, and the bottom backdoor (the one for the laser disc player).

The original Dragon's Lair model on the left, and the replica :

I've no more black vinyl, so I'll paint it :

Let's check if it fits the cab'  :?:

OK, let's go for the last part... the bottom backdoor :

I've found the perfet metal grille sheet

It's strong, and easy to cut  :)

A view of the top & bottom back door, finished  8)  :

Let's put them on location

Yeps ArcadeFever  :o  I've now all the stuff I need for this project  :P

Ok, it's time now to work on the control panel... coz' I'm a little bored about wood working and other stuff like that  :?

Here's the control panel

...as you can see, there is nothing to keep, exept the Atari button and of course the control panel itself  :?

So ... I'm removing the overlay

Let's sand it (done with a professional sanding machine ) :

Looks great, but the metal is not smooth enough and there's still some glue on it, rest of the orignal overal, so once again

Arggg    I can't remove the glue, so let's use the magical product :

...and I finish the job "manually"  8)

It's ok now. Ready to be painted  :)

Primer...

Done :

The other side of course :

I'll use the control panel overlay -under Bluth license- from Quaterarcade.

The US control panel is not exactly the same then the EURO one. The '1 & 2 start player buttons' have not the same size, and EURO panel do not include tbe skill selection buttons.

The US repro I'll use is the US model, but I want to use the original ATARI cone buttons for player 1 & 2... so the pre-cutted holes on that repro  for these buttons will be to large  :?

    I'll hide the hole with the use of the EXACT  overlay blue color  8)

I went to the paint shop with the CPO, and ask the seller to scan it for a perfect match of the color :

...and here's the custom blue color... done only for this project  8)

Ok, I can now paint the border of the control panel, and of course the area where the 'start players' buttons are located...

Oh yes, by the way I'm painting the CP border because the lenght of the CPO is not 100% the same than my CP. The CPO is a little little little bit smaller than the CP (maybe 1.5 mm). In that way, I won't see any color difference on the panel  8)

Yehawww  :P  Colors are the same   8)

Let's apply the overlay... in 2 steps (same method than the one I used for my Dragon's Lair cab)

...and there it is :

 :P

Put a new WICO 4 ways joystick, and all the buttons, and ... there is is :

 :P  :P  :P

It's time to work on the electronic part  :)

I don't want to use a MPEG files, but I don't have a working Space Ace PCB  :?  So what to do

OK, I'll use a real video disc player with the original Space Ace laser disc... I'll get a small computer just to emulate the pcb, with daphne emulator

The original Space Ace laser disc, ntsc version, in mind condition :

...and a SONY LDP 1500 videodisc player :

...in that way, I'll have the authentic arcade video quality, with a more reliable hardware inside  :o

Let's test the videodisc...

Ops... my old commodore monitor doesn't work in ntsc via a video composite signal... that's the reason I got a black & white picture.
Not a problem here, it's just a test  8)

Ok, let's choose a small computer... what about a Pentium 233mhz, 32MB ram, under windows 98 SE ?

...as I said previously, the computer will run daphne emulator, just to simulate the pcb, so the Pentium 233 does the job with any problem  :o

Ok, the original monitor doesn't work  :?

... well ...

Space Ace is one of my all time favorite games... so, it realy deserve a new monitor

Let's buy a brand new TV...

...with the exact tube size of the original tube : 19 "

Ok, let's test that TV...

A MIRACLE .... this TV understand ntsc video composite signal  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :P  :P  :P  :P  :P  :P

Thanks my lord  :o  I won't have to use the *brand new* ntsc to RGB conveter that I already got ( :? )

Ok, back to the original *non working*  monitor  :

I'm removing the tube and the PCB...

... in order to keep the original metal fixation.

Now, let's start to open the *brand new TV*

...only 5 skrews to remove and :

I'll add a piece of wood, as a TV pcb support :

It fits perfectly  :P  :P  :P

Let's test if it's still working

Great picture quality  :P

Great build, and excellent pictures.  Its a great resource.

How did you connect the controls to the PC?

Did you use an Ipac or a joystick port hack?

Or was it harder by hacking an existing keyboard?

Where you did you go to get this machine, and was there any others?
Title: Space Ace -> THE restoration !!!

What a job, Bruno!! Your hands turned that old crappy cab to a factory new Space Ace! Simply stunning!

The electronical solution you used is quite similar to the one I choose for my (still WIP) DL repro cab: autostarting Daphne with real laserdisc (mine is with MPEGs).
This make me think a pair of questions for you:

You (like me) don't want a Cinematronics score leds display between your speakers grilles, or an annunciator board under the control panel (european pride!!  :D ) . So, I suppose that this time you (like me) are forced to play SA using the USA ROMs, and without being able to see your score and your remaining lives (no fat blue screens  :( ).
Daphne 0.99.8 will probably support Euro versions of DL and SA, but to have the overlay emulated, it will be mandatory to use MPEGs (this was the first reason for me to choose not to use real LDs) . If you are going to convert your game to the Euro version in the future, which approach are you thinking about? And how do you select the skill level this time?

Congratulations again for the great work!

Igor: era per me la scansione dell'adesivo? Grazieee!!!! Continuo a non sapere come avrei fatto senza il tuo aiuto!
A presto!

For those who still don' t know ... I have to inform that the "newest" upgrade of the Daphne.exe allows to play Space Ace EURO !!!!!!!! ( Mpeg)
The mighty Mark Br. made this REAL !!!!!!!
Also DL "EURO" (ATARI) and "Italian"(Sidam) are completely playable !!!!!!
And if you still don't have a good "PAL" Mpeg you can "simply" convert the NTSC captures with some ... "good" video converting/editing tools !!!!!!
( if I was able to do those conversions , then ALL of you could !!!!!  hehe ! )

Good playing with the FABULOUS "Euro" DL & SA !!!!!!!!!!!!!

*the left-sided 3rd scene "Dodging the beams" (the one that begins with the StarPac landing on Borf's ship in the left side of the screen) begins with a shorter Dexter's scream "Ah-Haaa! Borf is here!".

CHECK and GET those differences between the EURO and the U.S., and you'll see I'm right  ;) 8) !

*The timing is slightly different from the U.S. revision A2, and it's basically due to the fact that A2 has an "incremental" difficulty in the moves timing, while the EURO revision has NOT ! It's a matter of 1/10 sec. only, but even if it really is a "small" difference Dex could easily die in this situation if the player is used with the EURO game and not with the U.S. one, so he could do a move too late ;).
Vice versa the U.S. player could die playin' on the EURO making certain move too soon...  ;D
Finally, EURO Space Ace is considered less difficult than U.S. A2 !

AH !
... an Atari Logo ?

Regarding the Atari logo, already have it (see this topic (https://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=167.0))  ;) ... but ... a little bit lazy to find someone who print it on the right material  ::) (you know that sticker seems very heavy and much thick than normal sticker). So maybe already available in the right material for sale somewhere? ... but I don't think so :?

Well, I cuold ask to Igor &/or Teo to know something more about the specific material.
When we know exactly what it is then we could do "something"...
;)
There's an italian photo-works site that could print almost everything onto every known material...
I use to make them print for me repro-boxes for my VCS loose carts, banners, posters and even adhesives...
Maybe they could help ;) !

And what about the other adhesive(s) attached just under the loudspeaker grill(s) ?
Teo's cab has also this/those and if I remember well they're all written in german... just like in the very first Atari cab I saw 26 years ago :) !
