[Roadtrip] Tank Attack
« on: September 21, 2009, 04:49:59 PM »

arcade roadtrip heaven at the moment  :) in my opinion every gameroom should have a couple of classic black & white games which started it all and which tell the story of how it all began. i'm trying to get a collection of the earliest games together like computer space and pong. i already have the first ever driving game, gran trak 10, i'm preparing a pong replica, i have my hands on a yet to be revealed game  ;) and today i made another score  TANK

compared to other roadtrips i have done, this is just around the corner ...

160 kilometers one way - piece of cake!

and now ... (who would have guessed?  :P)

the roadtrip starts to a foggy morning ...

... but the roads around frankfurt are always full of cars!

the location of the cab is the club house of a dart club. they are moving to a smaller location, so some of their games (photoplay etc.) have to go.

in the cellar of the club house

and here it is: kee games' tank from 1974 - it's been 35 years!!! the game is working, but it has some slight error in the graphics plus the fire buttons don't work >:( the seller said it has been working completely when they plugged it in last week, but isn't that what everyone's saying? no matter what, i can't let go of it, so it's bargaining time. the result: 50 euros off  8)

plus: THEY have to transport it up the stairs!

tank-ed

next to the club house there's a daily flee market which carries my nickname (spelled differently though). unfortunately, they didn't have any arcade games for sale  ;)

nothing spectacular on my way home, so let's continue with the bare facts

for now, this game is going into storage, because i have already too many projects up in my apartment. well, it's good to have it "out in the open" for a while, because - as you can imagine - the cab smells like hell  i H-A-T-E nicotine!!!

the overall condition of the cab is GOOD - only minor damages to the sides / the woodgrain!

the security bar / lock needs to be removed of course!

only one problem (which could become huge) besides the errors described earlier. have a look - can you see it?

left player controls - only a small crack in the plastic

right player controls - everything except the right joystick has been replaced  :'( i don't know if i'll be able to find original parts ...

nevertheless, i'm extremely happy with this catch. tank is a lot of fun and one of the true classics of the early era. ATTACK!!!

one country, two counties, 321 kilometers, 4 hours 9 minutes on the road - this roadtrip is OFFICIALLY OVER!

all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

1/ how did you come across this sale? did you see an advert somewhere?

2/ i love tank controls!

3/ those are some strange ass sticks! i hope you can locate replacements.

For immediate release  :-*

(...Road trip stories are on my top priority list for an headline on the homepage  :P :-* )

And one more cab & home, congratulation  ;) TANK! ... impossible to skip this one, regarding the historical value of the game itself, the nice overall condition, the small distance to drive, and finally the price.
So even it it was not in your 'must have' list, it's good to take it, even if you'll store it during a long time, you know it's yours  :P

I love this picture  :-*

... I should used it for a Ghosts'n Goblins maybe  ;)  ;D

Thanks for this new story my friend  :-*

Good luck for this new project  8)

nope - ebay! but listed in the wrong category  ;) those mistakes by the sellers are always good for a nice cheap score  ;D

Hah, that's how I got my SW cockpit. Pinball section and NO pic :)

Congrats on another fabulous game !!! This is not just another b/w game. This game ROCKS ! It's SO simple, but it is SO much 2 player fun !!!
I clearly remember Combat that came as the "factory" game with the Atari 2600. Although the graphics are nothing, my brother and I played it for hours and hours !

And a Kee Games game is already a big rarity here !!! Love it !!!

Now you must go back to that system, and bring back that Exidy's Death Race!

Yes... Good... Take your car, go for a new road trip and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!

That is your destiny, my friend.

The graphics glitch in the game (bad tank shape ?) is very likely a bad ROM.

This was the very first game to use ROM's to store player characters so it's a milestone piece for your collection ! :D

let me describe the graphics glitch a little bit further (although i won't be starting work on that game for quite a while). you can see the tanks, but they "switch" between normal and inverted display, as if they were blinking. know what i mean?
