how to ... CREATE THE COIN DOOR WRINKLE EFFECT???
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:03:07 PM »
hi guys!
for the restoration of my pac-man cab, i have to repaint the coin door because it's full of rust. however, this coin door does have some kind of "wrinkle effect", which means that the surface is not smooth but "rough". since some of you guys have already repainted / sprayed coin doors, i was wondering what kind of spray you have used for creating that wrinkle effect. there are a lot of products on the market and i can't decide on one (or two or three  ;))

so bring on your suggestions, please!
all i need is ... PONG - and a select few others: TOUCH ME, DRAGON'S LAIR, JOUST, ROBOTRON, MR DO, SAN FRANCISCO RUSH THE ROCK!!!

i don't know about hammerite. does it create a wrinkled surface our does it only make the surface look as if it were wrinkled?

anybody else? bruno, what have you been using?

Well, nothing special about this... I use to sand manually a door with a big grain sandpaper (80), and it gives me a nice result. Not 100% like the original, but it's good enough IMO (See here for example).

well , yesterday i was in my companies office , and we have a "demolition man" pinball there
i looked at the coindoor , and now know exactly what you mean with the effect you are discribing

it looks like they put very fine structure through the paint
like it had a bad sprayhead when they painted it, so it looks like some spickels of paint that are in there that are thicker than the rest of the paintjob

this is not the hammerite effect i think, now i saw a close up of the coindoor on that pinball.

this is the effect of hammerite, and that is not what you are looking for i think.

this is the effect you are looking for i guess:

maybe you can mix some rice that has been chopped up in a blender? hihihi ;D

or maybe some very delicate layer of sand between 2 or more coats of paint .

just experience with some piece of metal i would say  8)

goodluck, and keep us posted !

I think it might be textured powder coating or Rust-oleum texture paint might be what you are looking for.

I haven't tried it yet but I was told a good trick is to use a spraycan of primer, push down the nozzle very very slowly until the paint sort of sputters out randomly.
Do that a few times until you get enough bubbles/textures on the coin door, let that dry then paint over it with the final colour.

Another option is mixing in some sand, haven't tried that one either.

I think liquidx  has a good point, its like im describing with the "bad spray nozzle"

it must be something like spickels of paint that are random there in my opinion.

give the method that liquidx is giving a try on a old piece of metal as a experiment

alright, i've tried liquidx' method, but it didn't work (at least not for me). although the primer came out in small dots, it didn't create any kind of "elevation" at all - even after multiple layers.

i'm thinking of trying something like this: http://cgi.ebay.de/Orig-VHT-Wrinkle-Strukturlack-Schrumpflack-Race-rot_W0QQitemZ220378512801QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutopflege_Wartung?hash=item334f953da1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C66%3A4%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A200

what do you think?

This looks like the right effect, using Truck Bed Paint:

http://picasaweb.google.com/Talon.K/Tempest

Now to find it locally and figure out what they call it here.

Edit: in French it's "enduit pour caisse de camion". Can't find any outside canada for the moment though :)

might me too uniform, but if i use it the way you described it earlier (pressing down the button very slooooooowly), it could turn out great!

Have you tried running your finger over a paintbrush to splatter and speckle paint?
