Nintendo sky skipper Pcb found
« on: August 02, 2015, 08:33:16 AM »
Hi guys
Just thought I would let you know I've found a Nintendo Sky skipper with the official Nintendo Popeye conversion kit on it.
The Pcb is   Immaculate  and comes complete with the Popeye pin out.
By next weekend I will hopefully have this converted back and a video up so you can see it running on original hard ware.
My aim now it to put this into a cab or make a caberet I haven't decided yet.
I could get all the art work vectored from my flyer and convert a Popeye upright which would look amazing or build a caberet.
Or the other option is to convert a Popeye cocktail and find a helifire control panel as it uses 8way and two buttons.
Anyway I am really excited about this as I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever find one and now I have what looks like a Pcb that's never been used.

Keeping you posted
Alex

That's brilliant !!!

I actually remember Sky Skipper from the 2600 version BITD....I rented the game for a week :)

I never realized there was an arcade version until I started collecting...

Bring it to Eurocade and we'll pop it into my Radar Scope cabinet. ;);)

Great idea

You need an 8 way joystick though

Yea it's a horizontal game with two buttons so not sure if that would work

Long time since I worked on the joysticks on the Nintendo but isn't 8 way a matter of removing a restrictor ?

I am positive that I changed the left joystick to 4 way already (so I can play multiple Nintendo boards). The right one is still 2-way though....however......no way on earth I'm going to add a button.....

Damn.....wish I had kept the Metal Nintendo CP that Ully left behind a couple of Eurocades ago...we could have made a custom CP.....rats rats...

Took a look at the flyer.....would it be workable to temporarily hack P2 button ?

Man that cocktail looks like it had a 19" monitor crammed in there !

Just watched a video of the arcade version and wow, does this have Popeye style written all over it !

The arcade version never made it out of Japan, which makes it pretty weird that Parker Beothers did make a 2600 version for it...

IIRC, the guys in the US who did the Parker Bros. conversion had access to a cocktail and hated the game so much they returned it to the distributor ASAP!

EDIT: found the interview - note the views of the programmer don't necessarily reflect mine ;)  Looks like I misremembered the returning to distributor part!

"Steve Kranish: I can’t help you with any of these – except Sky Skipper. That was a truly insipid arcade game; in fact it was so bad that I was the only one in the office who was willing to play it (I am not a gamer, remember?) so I became the local expert and could answer questions for whoever got stuck writing the port. The Marketing Bozos had agreed to sell it in hopes that doing so would provide access to future games, which I don’t think ever happened.

The Sky Skipper that we had in the office was a table model, rather than an upright arcade game. The monitor was under a glass top. I think the idea was that one had to be drinking to be willing to pay money to play such a stupid game, and the table top provided someplace to put your drink while you played. This does not explain my willingness to play it; I do not drink."

It's funny reading that Stev the game must have really flopped.
I actully quite like it and I am not just saying that because it's Nintendo because I don't like radar scope but I like this.
I like the way you can get more points for getting a flush of cards in order. Also the first 3 levels so far are quite different and the music sounds like donkey kong junior.
I am not far away from having a working version up and running now.
